At first this game is great. A nostalgic trip right down the Command & Conquer memory lane. I knew beforehand that there was no real story to speak of and that was fine with me. But after a few missions you realize how lazy and uninspired the mission design really is. It is always "destroy x headquarters" or "kill everything" on the same maps over and over again. No variation. And the only challenge comes from the enemies numbers ore unfair advantages (nuke-silos anyone?). Maybe skirmish or multiplayer are descent. I dont't know. Never tried it and at this point I don't care any more.
I don't know why I keep coming back to this game. For some reason, it's like a comfort game for me. About once a year, I come back and play through the entire campaign on easy mode. But what kind of game is it? It's primarily a shooter with a small open world and sector conquests. There are various points of interest scattered across the map, such as upgrades, story snippets, or bunkers to conquer. Sometimes the enemy factions manage to recapture bunkers, but that's very rare. Along the way, there are always a few sights that keep you busy for a while, such as the remains of great battles with enormous robots. The game is neither particularly pretty nor varied, nor are the mechanics particularly sophisticated or the enemies particularly clever. But it has a rudimentary backstory with a touch of mystery and lost civilizations that somehow captivates me. And it's not a total failure in any area either. Certainly not suitable for everyone, it's still my go-to game when I want to relax a bit.
