Homeworld® Remastered Collection

HFT Reviews Homeworld Remastered

Beat’s Blitzkrieg Synopsis: The mightiest Karen ever conceived launches an interstellar crusade to destroy a galactic empire for fulfilling its contractual obligations. A Headin’ For Trouble Review by BeatYourHeadIn These days, everyone gets around the galaxy by hyper-3D-printer drives. Everyone except filthy Exiles that is! This awesome techgizmology lets you and your mothership travel faster-than-laserjet to anywhere there is a Taiidazon Entanglement Center; which is everywhere now. However, Taiidazon Imperial Enterprises Incorporated obviously cannot tolerate any competitors since, as we all know, competition is a sin. Thus, unlawful users of hyper3Dspace printers will be severely punished. Since you are in violation of Taiidan-Kushan Treaty 9.54D Section 2e, you, Kushan Exile sewer scum, have been found guilty of 3rd Dimension Premeditated Teleprinting and, by order of His Holy Emperorness, The Emperor, Emperor of the Taiidan Empire, your planet has been scheduled for demolition to make room for a new Taiidazon Entanglement Center. You have two hours to file an appeal with the manager of the nearest Galactic Council regional branch. Have a nice day! Signed, Taii Dan Magi Strate the Third, Taiidan Magistrate of the Taiidan Galactic Rim Territories. Oh, Karen Sajette will be talking to the manager, all right. Have you ever seen the movie Payback? Let’s just say she talks herself all the way to the top of the hierarchy of managers and arrives at the galactic capital of flocking birds and beaches with weather stations. Homeworld Remastered Collection is interesting. In that I don’t like it. Why the thumbs up then, Beat!? Just you shush, dear readers! I’ll get to that later. FTL: Advanced Edition

HFT Reviews FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL is a unique blend. It's action. It's strategy. It's roguelike. It's casual. However, none of those over-arching titles actually capture FTL's vibe. Perhaps "Jean-Luc Picard Flees the Borg Simulator" best gets the point across. The strength of this seemingly simple game is its surprising level of depth. As a playthrough progresses, you have full control over the customization of the ship's various systems and upgrades. You're not likely to max out every category (or even a couple, for that matter), so you'll have to customize the ship around your play-style and your play-style around the RNGesus loot generator in order to see success. FTL does cater to different play-styles: one could focus on offensive abilities or defensive abilities. Thankfully, the game is deep in terms of customization, resulting in branching upgrade paths for both O and D. For example, one may choose to focus on dodge instead of shielding, or boarding parties instead of heavy weaponry. The choice is yours... sort-of. Allow me to elaborate. First, accept that diplomacy is non-existent. Talking one's way out of a dispute rarely an option, so arm the photon torpedoes and report to battle stations! Second, acknowledge that it is unwise to start a new game of FTL with a certain strategy in mind, and then command your ship with upgrade tunnel vision. The game is based around entirely random encounters; adaptation is a virtue. To all those who like to plan ahead, this game flips you the bird! Sure you can have an overall goal in mind, but the game is random: you get what you get. Work with what you can scrounge up and/or to die trying! Commanding the crew and diverting power to ship systems RTS-style works great! Crew members gain proficiency in various ship-stations and... The Solus Project

HFT Reviews The Solus Project

The Solus Project is one of those indie creations to get excited about. It’s a very good game, but is it a perfect game? Of course not! It’s got a few weird things going on: a couple graphical issues and seemingly endless references to other intellectual properties (borrows much from TV show Lost in particular). Readers, I know what you’re thinking: So what, another indie studio created another indie game blah blah blah why should I care? Readers, I already told you the answer to that: it’s a very good game! Weren’t you listening!? Think: a crispy Lost pie crust with the disappointing conclusion trimmed off (Season 6, I’m looking at you) and fill that with Interstellar custard cream, but now scrape the oily Matt Damon meringue off the top and then sprinkle with a couple teaspoons of crushed Ancient Aliens. Ahhhh, pure heaven I tell ya! Okay, so there’s no black hole or time travel in TSP, but it captures that “Interstellar” vibe nonetheless. More than once, I found myself overlooking an alien tropical beach paradise at the precipice of a craggy drop off and wanting pump both fists into the air and yell, “I’M THE MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY OF THE WORLD!!!” I didn’t though. My wife isn’t into videogames. Such spontaneous outbursts would be frowned upon and followed up by punishment nagging to do irrelevant tasks. Yeah, fetching that glass of water for you and then that bowl of kale chips for you and then turning off that hallway light so you could watch Gilmore Girls without the glare sure showed me for enjoying something without you. Lesson learned. Ahem, moving on readers, this is simulated walking at its finest. That statement is coming from me: a gamer who loathes Dear Esther et al. I feel like TSP goes the extra mile to... Shadow Empire

HFT Reviews Shadow Empire

Shadow Empire is a once a generation gem of a game. It's quite the claim and what, you wonder, regarding this glorified map-simulator featuring creature icons resurrected from the fossilized remains recovered from an ancient SimEarth floppy could warrant it!? Only the fact that it is an homage to an era in game design that does not exist today. Back to basics; Game Design 101-Building of the Back Story. SE is no slouch in lore but I suggest reading it from the manual; the intro is steeply abridged. Your theatre of war is a drama to rival the best in the genre; a sweeping space-opera that spans epochs of history from the launch of the space age to the collapse of a sprawling galactic empire. And of course the constant conflict therewithin. This pregame saga ends in self-inflicted cataclysm which swings humanity–quite violently–full circle back to the dawn of city-states akin to those of earthly antiquity ascending from the darkness of prehistorical turmoil, into the dazzling light of historical turmoil. To Turn 1 in this great game. I’ll be honest, the “dazzling light” bit was for dramatic effect. Thanks to impenetrable Fog of War, your phoenix-like rise will be more akin to a dimmer switch turned with excruciating sluggishness. The F of FoW is simulated to a high degree of authenticity. I’ve never seen such a totally enshrouding FoW system like this before. And! I! Love! It! Map info is doled piecemeal like rations during The Blitz. Knowing anything depends upon Recon Points without which, you know nothing Jon Snow. Without Recon, you don’t know there's a unit hiding in the forest beside your farm, then you don’t know what type of unit, then you don’t know how many, then you don’t know if you killed any with the artillery strike, then you don't...
