Overload

Fun but a bit short

Enjoyed this a lot. It's a nice shooter throwback to Descent. It's great fun, if you liked the arcade shooting of Descent. Unfortunately, it's pretty short, and the last section of the game is very dissimilar to the first section (and much less fun). There are about half of the levels of the original Descent.

EVERSPACE™

Shallow Rogue-lite

If you go into this looking for something like Freelancer, you'll be disappointed. Arcade action, and it's a roguelike, but without much depth. It's pretty, but feels shallow and empty. Other roguelikes that build on top of the pattern offer at least something to buffer the permadeath or advance the formula. Not here. Shoot things in arcadey outer space, die, do it again. If this sounds like your jam, go for it. It's not mine.

Gone Home

tumblr Social Justice Warrior bait

There are plenty of games that include LGBT themes, while still managing to be a game. This isn't a game, it's a tumblr given life. If your idea of a good time is to cruise social justice blogs, this is for you. No reviewer is allowed to say this, though, or they will be called a homophobe by the tumblr overmind.

Prince of Persia®: The Sands of Time

Great game, bad PC port

This is one of the best platformers of all time; sadly, the PC port is average-to-bad. If you don't have the graphics issues which sometimes plague the game, you will definitely have controller issues. There's no way to get a 360 controller working without some hacks. This isn't an issue with GoG, but rather with Ubi.

Papers, Please

Propaganda

This game, like others of its type, makes use of a cliche that life in communist states was brutal and oppressive. This is largely a work of fiction. Where this kind of behavior IS carried out is by US Government agents. The opportunity for social criticism is there, especially since this game mirrors the very real DOD game "Cyber Security Awareness Challenge," but instead the creators of this game chose to use a debunked cold war cliche instead. One star, zero if I could assign it.

Wizardry 8

The last of Wizardry and Sir Tech

When this game was released in 2001 it was decidedly and aggressively old-school, but still managed to get repeated RPG of the year awards. It still holds up today, but thanks to Sir Tech's bankruptcy, copies of the game have been selling for nearly 200 dollars apeice. Which makes GoG quite the bargain! Snap it up, or play Crusaders of the Dark Savant first--it's my personal favorite.
