Regional pricing is kinda cool when you get deployed overseas. The multiplayer modes are dead by now in 2023 but endless is an ok game mode. Retro is hard. Keys are not bindable - meh. Why do I need to use the mouse to move the paddle?? Can't skip the opening text on Retro mode. Meh. Hard to see the letters on the powerups but so was the original when I played it in the arcades back when. Good game value on sale or in a bundle, if not there's probably better.
Awesome: Aesthetic design & great polished presentation. Few if any bugs, runs great. Great concept and execution. Tons of stats and math stuff but you don't HAVE to be super into that. Devs have made a ton of balance changes in the last year or two. Guides and information available on wiki, Steam guides and YT channels. Not so awesome for me: You're really looking at melee character, ranged, and magic user with not much else, just variations. Skills are tied to equipment, so give your melee char a wand and hey presto they now throw spells. The game is super-item-focused. Yes there are traits and perks but it's minor stuff until you get into the meat of the game and it's just bonuses, it's not skills as far as I can tell. That makes a character seem more like a weapons platform than a person. Meh. Kind of what put me off PoE. You build things. You're assaulted by a horde. You throw down a ton of damage. You progress gradually. That's it. The balance is tilted toward doing damage. Making a tanky or sneaky/dodging character is generally not needed.
Do Not Buy if you were hoping to run this in Windows 10. It ran fine for me in Win 8.1 but no longer. Compatibility mode does not work. GOG will not honour their refund policy because it doesn't say Win 10 in the required specs for the game on the store page. That said, great game. Warhammer X-Com, really, with a great soundtrack and some cool immersion. Nostalgia ftw, but ...yeah, won't run in Win 10.
