Very Fun!

I never played the original game when I was a kid but after beating this remake I wish I did. I would have loved this game back then. The levels are challenging and finding all of the collectables and progressing your character is a blast. The music and artwork are fantastic and the fact that you can swap between the 8-bit and modern styles on the fly is really cool. You can tell that a lot of love went into making this. The only sort of bad thing that I can say is that there are a bunch of enemies that are really annoying to deal with at first but even then, you just need to learn how to use the tools that the game gives to overcome them.

A remake done right.

Every video game remake should follow the spirit of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. I did not play Wonder Boy on the Master System; the game is before my time. But with a toggle switch you can see the work that went into modernising this game. The graphics are detailed and pleasing to look at and the audio upgrade sounds excellent without any great deviation to the original. Which brings me to the controls. The controls on this game are heavily lamented throughout several reviews. Wonder boy's "feel" is different than most modern platformers but I really don't think it is that bad. The controls are not impossible to get used to. It is however, extremely difficult to get a flow going. Your movement is slippery and your attacks are generally made to a fixed point as opposed to an area in front of the character: think piercing damage instead of slashing. You are also unable to make a regular attack directly above you; although there are special items that will do the job. Defense is generally a passive ability so it is harder to time attack and blocks. There are minor variances between the different characters you animorph into, but overall the control over them is generally the same. I personally wouldn't change it. I like the challenge of getting used to new in game physics. Any great change in the handling in the game would take away from the homage being paid to the original and may have even broken the game. I had a blast everytime I played, If you love platformers, get this game. 8/10 (Review Transferred From Steam Account. 12.1hrs game play recorded)

have this for nintendo switch

a very fun side scroller with rpg element. Defnitely worth the purchase. Buy it on GOG for 1/2 price! got it for the switch for to play in bed and on the go.

A must have

The original game was a master hit, this one still is. If only all remakes could be as well done as this one. I love the possibility to choose any time between old and new gaphics, and between old and new sounds. It is done flawlessly, which is a very good point. The music is perfect, and so is the new design. About difficulty, I thought it was well balanced. The hard mode is challenging without being impossible. It just ask patience to understand how to keep going on and which part of equipment to buy first. If you are a nostalgic, you will love this game. And if you're not but you like platform/action games, you will surely love it too.

Bravo!

This certainly brought back some memories. Me and my sister really used to love this game and we'd play it a lot in 1990/91. The new graphics and animations are great so is the new score but being able to switch between the new and original version at any moment is pretty awesome. No technical issues on my end (using a gtx 1060) as another gentleman with a 970 reports on the reviews, his hardware should in theory be up for the job i hope he can resolve his frame rate/stutter issue.
