A piece of art in various aspects, But this game's platform physics really spoiled the game for me.

Excellent remake of a great game.
Along with Ultima IV and Phantasy Star this game was one of the most advanced Master System (and 8bit in general) games, it's a linear path side scrolling adventure platformer with light RPG elements and a hub world, not quite a Metroidvania due to the lack of a true open world but there's a lot to explore here with lots of secrets, powerful items and rare loot drops. It was a exceptional game back then and is just as relevant and impressive now with a shiny coat of paint. It's a fantastic labour of love which accurately remakes one of my favourite SMS games in a tasteful manner. Everything is spot on here - the whistful music and cutesy graphics are brought up to date and look amazing but still retain the character of the original. You can flick between the modern and Master System tilesets with the press of a button as well as changing the music back to the original PSG chiptune - playing vith modern visuals and the original audio is actually really neat. It also has an easy mode which is a welcome addition for casual players, the original game could be punishingly difficult and even on easy if you go into the wrong area too soon without the correct equipment you will die very quickly. So this would easily be a 5 star review, unfortunately I went to load my save (close to the end of the game with all the best items collected) and the game said the file was corrupted and deleted it, so although I absolutely love this game and will definitely play it again it can't really give it more than 3 due to this. Make sure you back up that save file just to be sure - it's in My Documents - Lizardcube.

A fun remake
Overall, this game is a lot of fun. It works well on Linux, with controller support out of the box. the hand-drawn artwork is great, and the game even lets you switch between the original looks and music and the remade visuals and sound. As a game, there are a LOT of cheap shots that can't really be avoided, especially with the bosses. The character is too slow and his jump is too small to give him any real maneuverability to dodge ANYTHING, and there are many instances where you get juggled by the baddies. This is reminiscent of games back in the day that did such a thing, but one would think that remaking a game would remove such an unfair part of the mechanics!

Great Remake probably too loyal
The game looks amazing. The music and graphics are great and the option to instantaneosly change one or both of them to retro style at any moment is welcome for retro style fans and those curious to give it a try. The gameplay and story feels old. It can be understood from a very loyal remake, specially the story. However the gameplay is hard to enjoy while a game like "Monster boy and the Cursed Kingdom" exists which has a great gameplay. It is a game that I really wanted to enjoy, but I couldn't or at least It is not for me.

Tedious and boring
I made a huge mistake, listening to the stellar reviews and buying this game. I used to love "Wonderboy in Monsterland" on the Amiga when I was a teenager and still play it occasionally on an emulator and I think it's a lot more fun than this game. I expected a modernized version that I can play on my Mac. I personally do not like the cartoon style graphics, the controls are super clunky and the game is zero fun for me. I uninstalled it after playing it for 20 minutes. About a year later, I tried it again and same thing, played for 20 minutes and felt like I never wanted to play this again so I uninstalled it again. I just don't get what people love about it so much. I think it's just tedious and boring. The music is pretty good though.
