Not worth going back to
This game starts out promising. The first two missions take place on hand-crafted levels and the narrative is interesting enough. Unfortunately the game always lost me after completing these initial two missions, because the following missions take place on randomly generated levels that act as a "filler" between the relevant plot missions. And some of these random missions, especially on "factory" levels, are confusing as a genestealers guts. It was almost impossible for me to figure out how to move my marines from Y to Z, or from which position an enemy will be in sight or not. These levels are like mazes, which made them an exercise in frustration and utterly un-fun to play. Most if not all of the random missions can be skipped, but then it is very likely that your marines will not gain the necessary experience and levels to survive the later plot missions. For me, this alone killed the game. The gameplay itself was satisfying enough, but it's no X-Com or Jagged Alliance. The gameplay is much simpler than in those games, and you might be disappointed if you are expecting more refined control over your units. One thing that also put me off is that it's so hard to figure out the real effectiveness of weapons and armor. One of your marines may get hit 4 times by enemy fire and will not have a scratch, whereas another marine who gets hit once may lose 30% of his health. Same thing with the enemy; You may hit an enemy cultist 4 times until he finally dies, whereas another dies with a simple hit. This was a little too random for my taste. Finally, I really see no reason to go back to this game when there are so much better WH40K games to play, if you get that itch. The Dawn of War games are so superior in every way, they have basically rendered this mediocre game obsolete. I recommend it only if you are a hard-core WH40K fan and want to play everything the franchise has to offer.
