This shouldn't be called "Bloodlines 2"

I understand that this game has been in development Hell for 6 years. However, the game that was released has very little connection to the first Bloodlines game. While Bloodlines (as well as Redemption) was an RPG, this feels more like a straight-up action game. There is no semblance of "roleplaying" at all here. You don't have the freedom of choice, since the game makes you progress the story in the exact way that it wants you to. You also only have the illusion of choice when it comes to choosing a clan, since you can gain the powers of every clan in the game through clan trainers. The latter giving me no interest in wanting to replay the game. In an earlier build, the gameplay had the player using guns. In the released product, while you can still "use" guns, you can only hold them with telekinesis and shoot the entire clip at once at an enemy. There are also no melee weapons at all, just your hands. The Chinese Room took the IP, made it look pretty, but stripped it of everything that made it part of the "Vampire: The Masquerade" universe. If you are a fan of the original Bloodlines, there is very little for you in this one. However, if you want a dark action game, then go ahead and give this a try, but this shouldn't be called "Bloodlines 2."

Mostly fun but!

Combat system sucks... The basic and the minimum required elements are missing from combat like: Why am I taking damage while feeding? What's the point of trying to feed anyways? Why are my attacks not staggering the enemy and the enemy can do a brutality while I'm doing my most powerful attacks. In what game all the opponents come over you without a count limit... Really sad about combat, and RPG elements seems to be really linear and non existent... and the map... It's not enough!!! But, I loved getting back in World of Darkness... Not many memorable characters though... The graphics looks stunning and characters look good. Animations surprise me... They are bad! Traversing the map is really fun, top notch! I hope they fix the combat system!

Good Vampire game, but not a Bloodlines

Update: I just started a second playthrough with a different clan . The game is undercooked unfortunately in several ways. I still have fun with the game though. I am adding to the negatives and my conclusion below, but will keep my 4 star rating. There just aren't enough VtM games to compete, even though this game here could have been way better than it is. - Is it a good game? -- Yes, it's fun to play. The fighting mechanics rock, The power fantasy is amazing: you are an elder vampire who jumps, glides and climbs from roof to roof - yeah, it's truly amazing! It seems that you can be a fangbanger - hell yeah! But you need to work for it. >:D Feels pretty close to the source material, it's a good Vampire the Masquerade game and probably the most polished and pretty VtM game up to date (fanpatches aside). It runs smoothly. Sometimes it stutters when you open a door or something, typical traversal stutter, but nothing serious. My grafics card does approve it. The grafics rock, the game looks amazing, holy moly, the game even looks like a neon fever dream sometimes and the characters have a personaility and really good voice acting. And my, my, the lip sync is mesmerizing sometimes. Makes me stare at their mouths. ;-) The atmosphere is dense and you can feel the scenery a lot if you want to. Diving into it, playing immersed. - Being a vampire on the hunt for prey. Yeah, I am gonna play the fook out of this game. The game has got problems though, see below. Choices in conversations seem to matter. You can be a brute or a diplomat. I am not sure yet if it's just an illusion of choice though. The dude, the voice in your in your head, Fabien, is actually a nice addition. I do enjoy his parts. I wonder what the mystery is going to be here. It's got detective parts to solve, these are fun and different. The devs put all the playable clans in the base game, after fans complained about the 20€ DLC to unlock Lasombra and Toreador, that is included now, thank you very much! <3 - Ok, what sucks? (no bloodsucking jokes below! haha) -- It's NOT a Bloodlines game. What a bummer! I wanted that. They should have called it differently. "VtM Nomad" maybe? I don't know. Just a different cool name. This game is is like a package of jelly candies with a chocolate logo on it. Both sweet but different. There are some easter eggs, pointing to Bloodlines 1 and they are fun, but feel a bit out of place. This is a different game. It's also not an RPG. Bloodlines 1 was based strongly on the tabletop game, but this game is rather an Immersive Sim genre with fighting perks to unlock and with NPC relationships. Maybe like Dishonored with a bit Batman Arkham City and a bit of Telltale adventures, plus this and that? Some sidequests are boring after a while and repetetive. Like: "collect enough of the specific bloodtype, to learn get a new vampire disciple", this is basically rinse and repeat all over again. Can be fun, if you are playing a bit immersive, but it's like the same to do everytime. The city is crowded with Anarch thinblood thugs. And they look like exzessively colorful dressed punks. These are not the Anarchs I remember. Feels a bit weird. Did the Anarchs change that much in from old VtM to V5? It's a very cold season with snow everywhere, but a huge crows of people are literally living on the streets during the cold nights. Not very realistic. There are no moving cars, trains or any other vehicles. They are there, but just as immovable assets. Also no underround train - dude, what a missed oppotunity! Well, maybe in a later part of the game? I am still in snowy Seattle, the starting area, after like 10 hours or so. UPDATE: - Undercooked city: There is only one hub, only this part of seattle all the way through the game. It is a tiny playground compared to Bloodlines 1. You find yourself entering buildings and dungeons during the game, but the city is always this small piece of Seattle. No city hubs! I am pretty sure the devs were talking about hubs. - Undercooked human population: there are barely differences, they are basically all the same NPC who is looking different, but reacting the same way, etc. - Undercooked Masquerade system: I guess for an action game it is alright, but still: if you break the masquerade, cops are shooting at you, you hear helicopters searching for you - but there aren't any. There has been a good idea, but it's not executed completely. - Undercooked bloodtype system: just grinding the same stuff. Barely any variation on the people, based on what you are wearing. - Undercooked disciplines, some are barely useful - or what did I miss? The disiciples are actually a fun part of the game, but at the end of the day it doesn''t feel complete to me. Like lost in translation, stuck in development or something. For example all the disciplines on key 3 are easily forgettable. - Undercooked relationship system: what does it change to the story of the game, how you react to the characters? Not much. You always can watch popups how vampires like your approach etc. but at the end of the day the game will execute pretty similiar it seems. Maybe the end will be different, I don't really know yet. -- So what? "Buy or die"??? -- (pun intended) Soooo, yeah. It's a good VtM action adventure game and actually I love it, but not a Bloodlines game. And that is very disappointing because it's got the branding to be a sequel. The name Blooodlines comes with certain expectations and these aren't fulfilled. I guess thats why people are review bombing the game. It's actually a pretty, solid, modern action adventure though with a deep visual atmosphere, great sound design and strong, deliciously VtM flavor. Undercooked though, unfortunately. If you want a new VtM game to slam your fangs into: go for it. If you expect a new original Bloodlines CRPG with lots of black humor, multiple talents and all that jazz. then you will be disappointed. I wished Paradox released both games. This here AND the Brian Mitsoda sequel. that got dropped during development unfortunately. There can never be enough dedicated Vampire The Masquerade videogames, if you ask me. Get it on sale and if you are a Vampire The Masquerade fan and action fan. Do not expect an RPG as Bloodlines, it is too different.

Not Bloodlines 2 but I liked it.

I was a huge fan of VtmB back in 2004. Having already been a player and GM of the tabletop game. This is a sequel in name only as far as the gameplay goes. But I get that for something like the Nomad a regular character sheet wasn't going to work so I am glad they did not go that route. It was a bit button mashy and it lacked options to use more traditional abilities from the game (both previous VtmB and the tabletop) and I did miss that. The story however, was in my opinion very good. I have been hooked on the lore and genuinely enjoyed the flashbacks to Fabien and his prior experiences. People complain about the "voice in your head" but I found it both intriguing and amusing. If there was one thing I would change about this or any future efforts it would be to tie it better to the actual table top game mechanics better and to deliver on a playstyle that would more accurately present what a player of the first game and the table top experience were able to provide. Yes I know that would take some of the uniqueness of the game away, but what I feel people are looking for in video game tie ins to table top experiences are the same as what Critical Role fans look for. Those who are unfamiliar are looking for a cheat sheet to how the game plays out and what they would expect from the game's World. While fans are looking for a faithful recreation or at least close tie in that can allow them to experience the world even when they can't get a game together themselves. Overall I gave points for the story and its presentation. It was a good Vampire the Masquerade story, but not a really close successor to the original. 4/5 stars and I hope they get a chance to play in this sandbox again. Maybe even start their own story series.

Unfairly maligned

whatever you do, go into this experience with open eyes. as a Bloodlines game? this is an unmitigated failure. that game already died though - 6 years ago, when Hardsuit Labs collapsed. this game should be examined on it's own merit. so, on it's own merit? this is one of the most fun games i've played in over a decade. this is NOT Bloodlines - this game is Prototype. yup, you heard me. this game is a true power fantasy, where you're unleashed on a city of helpless and hapless worms, lambs to the slaughter. you're a demigod, an apex predator, and Seattle is your playpen and sandbox. the movement in particular feels INCREDIBLE in this game, bounding rooftop to rooftop in single bounds is a joy and tickles the whole "the floor is lava" part of my brain for traversal challenge and mastery. also, the stealth is great - it's not an immersive sim, but you can absolutely completely avoid combat with rooftop perching, telekinesis, sound traps and timing. a very, VERY pleasant surprise. hold your heads high The Chinese Room - you did GREAT, and you should be proud of delivering the impossible :)
