As someone who didnt quiet enjoyed VtM: Bloodlines 1, I was way more interested into playing Bloodlines 2 because of the gameplay that resembles the one in Dishonored. But keeping the Bloodlines title feels misleading because it is not Bloodlines 1.
The positives of this game are:
1, The story is good. Mix of a detective story(Fabien) like that of Deus Ex: Human Revolution / Mankind Divide but a bit narrowed down to make sure you don't fail. The part of Phyre is more like a Dishonored type but a bit more simplified.
2. The map is very interesting and quite small. Its fun gliding and running on roof tops, it kind looks like that of Batman: Arkham City.
The negatives of this game are:
1. There are some parts of the game that are quite unfinished ( clipping through some walls)
2. Some bugs with traversal
3. The exploration being a bit dull with the items to pick up in the work
4. Side quests are repetetive
5. No manual saves
Some personal complains that I have:
This game really needs a small potion shop, cause finding them in the world or in the levels is kinda annoying.
The game sometimes deals a lot of damage ( Even when you feed on the enemy during combat )
Overall, the game isn't bad but it should not have Bloodlines in its title, cause it is not Bloodlines.
I’m quite enjoying it. As expected, it's a narrative-driven action-adventure game with serviceable RPG-lite elements, an intriguing plot in the VtM & World of Darkness universe, a good setting, and some Dishonored vibes. As you progress through the game, it only gets better in terms of diverse gameplay possibilities, new mechanics, and also narratively with the peculiar protagonist's duality. The real game begins after beating the first vampire boss. While the combat feels "clunky" at first, it also gets much fluid and satisfying once you learn how to make the best use of and complement your skills. Also, I haven't experienced any issues with the launcher, and performance is overall pretty good for an UE5 with Lumen, except for some traversal stuttering (the developer is aware of the performance issues and plans to patch it via updates). All in all, it's a good Vampire: The Masquerade game. I recommend it and rate it a 7 out of 10.
TDLR: I can't recommend it at full price, but it would be a worthwhile title at 50%-75% off. The story and music are the highpoints. It's a combat heavy game, but with the right clan picks it can be more stealth / tactics based.
In 2019, Paradox Interactive announced that a sequel to Troika's 2004 "Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines" would be created by developer Hardsuit Labs. This purported to be a game with similar design, where the player would play a new-created vampire in the city of Seattle, (the first game is set in Los Angeles). This game was cancelled in 2021, and the assets were passed to developer The Chinese Room to try and create a game that was finally released on October 21st, 2025.
In this game - The Chinese Room's version, the player takes the role of a specific powerful Vampire called "Phyre", although the player can choose if Phyre is male or female, and her clan, from six possible options. Your choice of clan determines what vampiric powers are available and changes a few dialogue options in the game.
I suspect this choice was made due to limited resources, as making the player an Elder Vampire allowed the developer to remove lockpicking, hacking and give Phyre a distain for weapons of any kind, removing any need for an inventory or weapon swapping system. Indeed, most of the design choices made here seem to stem from the developer being starved for resources.
The city is open and fills what I would guess is a standard map area in Unreal 5. Phyre can climb buildings and jumping from rooftop to rooftop is fun, Phyre takes no damage from falling, so you can traverse the city like a superhero. Only a small handful of locations can actually be entered, but plenty of potential victims wander the streets for Phyre to snack upon. The city is very attractive in places, but there isn't much to see or do. Unless you actually set out to collect all the collectibles in the game, there are parts of the city you never actually visit which was a bit of a missed opportunity.
Phyre awakens branded with magical tattoos, having been asleep for 100 years, and not knowing why she is now in Seattle, so the player has a immediate urgency to figure out what the hell is going on. The brand conveniently supresses Phyre's powers and prevents her from leaving Seattle. With experience points you can fairly quickly regain Phyre's Clan Abilities, Abilities from other clans require more effort, but can also be picked up, allowing a lot of choice. By the end of my Tremere game, I had unlocked all the Tremere, Venture, Banu Haqim powers and two Brujah ones.
While some of the abilities "can" be used outside of combat, they are all primarily intended for combat. You can have 4 powers active at any time, and can switch the active powers at any time. The powers are arranged into groups: "Strike", "Affect", "Re-position" and "Mastery", and you can only have one power from each group active at one time. As Phyre drinks blood, it fills pips for each group, and expending the pips for your active "Strike", means Phyre cannot use any more "Strike" powers until she recovers those pips, but is free to use anything from the other 3 Groups. This system honestly felt a little complex and restrictive.
Phyre can feed during combat, so you can, use one Strike power to disable an enemy, feed, disable another with some punches, feed, and then use a different Strike.
Sadly, outside of your powers, you have to rely on punching the enemies. Clan choice adds a bit of flair to Phyre's combat style, Ventrue and Brujah fight like boxers, Banu Haqim and Toreador use martial arts and the Tremere makes magical gestures that strike enemies from a short distance away. Surprisingly, this make the Tremere possibly the hardest to play, as they sacrifice damage for range, and most fights have Phyre quickly surrounded by 4 or more opponents that either quickly close, or have guns. The Tremere powers aren't great in a stand-up fight, which turns the Tremere into more of a stealth class, where you have to smartly use your powers before a battle to thin out the enemies as much as you can. The game does however have several sections where you are forced into a face to face battle, where the Vampire with the more direct powers will have an advantage.
I found the combat on normal difficulty to be very taxing, but I was playing a Tremere, I'm not great at action games, and I don't have great situational awareness, so after a fight was over I would often notice gas tanks, or guns lying on the ground that I could of made use of. The final boss battle of the game was so difficult for me that I actually had to drop the difficulty down to succeed. Your experience may vary. The combat is fast and fluid, your powers can make a big difference and are fun to use. There is also quite a number of enemies to fight, from the minions of other vampires, to moderately powerful vampires and well armed vampire hunters.
The story is probably the game's strongest point, and the game feels best when you're in a conversation, verbally sparring with the various Characters in the game. The story is a real Vampire the Masquerade story, which kept me guessing, with no idea who I could trust and who I couldn't, multiple times I would decide who my enemy was, only to change my mind a mission later when that NPC would then assist me. This continued all the way until the end of the game. The defeat of the final boss was a little anti-climatic, just a short voice-over describing the fate of Seattle's vampires.
Outside of the main quest, which has very detailed and well-crafted locations, beautifully lit and packed with urban decay, there is not a lot else. Three of the characters in the open world offer quest chains, one is to deliver or collect packages, and the other two are to kill specific NPCs, all three happen in the open world of the game. I suspect that a LOT more was probably planned for this part of the game, but was dropped to save development time.
Does the game feel like the first Bloodlines game? At points. The Chinese Room have been quite open that they tried to copy the atmosphere and tone of the first game, while ignoring mechanics and other aspects. There were points where I was luring NPCs into alleyways to drink their blood, or on several of the main quests, sneaking through a rundown drug den or backrooms of a night-club where I really did have flash backs to the 2004 Bloodlines game. I think that the "who can I trust?" aspect of Bloodlines 2 actually works better, at least for me, in the original I quickly determined who could be trusted, whereas Bloodlines 2 had me falsely accusing people the whole game. While I don't specifically miss the hacking / lockpicking gameplay from the first, I really did miss the ability to talk or seduce my way out of situations, or the option to simply stealth past enemies.
So - in summary, a little disappointing, it's not a terrible game by any means, and I think it's worth playing for the story, but only at 50% discount or more. I played on release, and found two locations where I fell through the world, and had two crashes to desktop, (although the crashes might have been my PC as opposed to the game). It's missing a save "anytime" system, (probably again due to limited resources), using checkpoints, checkpoints are frequent on main quests, but if you die in the open world, you can lose a fair bit of playtime.
Due to the sheer amount of content and features that have obviously been cut from this, I don't see it having the lifespan of the 2004 Bloodlines. Troika - the developer of the first Bloodlines frantically tried to pack as much into the game as they could, resulting in janky AI, broken quests and crashes, but there was a lot of joy to be found in that mess. The Chinese Room's Bloodlines 2, by comparison, has been cut to the bone in order to make the release date. The bones have been well polished, but there isn't any flesh left to sink our fangs into.
Finished the game yesterday and felt compelled to start a new game to try a different clan. I really enjoyed the story, the characters, the intrigue, the atmosphere.
First of all, I did get worried with all that happened to the game durting development and was a bit surprised when I saw that The Chinese Room was taking the helm. I do like the studio, in fact I've been playing their games since they released Dear Esther back in the day, I just knew that it probably wouldn't be a fully fledged RPG.
And yeah the game is not an RPG, it leans more to action adventure, immersive sim. The devs did mention this since they started to talk about the game.
All that being said, I really enjoy the game, as mentioned above liked the story, atmosphere, characters and so on. I like how the story and the mystery evolves and kept me wanting to play just a little bit more.
At first I was not sure about the combat, but when I started to balance all the abilities it really clicked. It's fun, as well as the traversal, it feels really cool using the vampire sprint and gliding all over Seattle.
I feel that the side quests leave a bit to be desired, they feel samey very fast.
All in all I feel it is a good game for what it is and I am looking forward to the story expansions.
[SPOILERS] [SPOILERS] [SPOILERS] [SPOILERS] [SPOILERS] [SPOILERS]
Towards the end I think the game would have benefited of a final mission with Phyre in full strength after getting rid of the mark.
I havent come very far yet, but I do think its kinda good so far (If I remember I will update this later.), but its absolutely not anything like the first game. So if you go in expecting a vampire game you might like this (but we'll see), but if you expect anything resembling the first one, this will disappoint you a lot. In name only.
Im a little disappointed in the graphics and writing, it feels a little dated even though it just released.
Edit: So after playing for a while now I must say im disappointed. pretty much every aspect of the game is lacking. the fights feel sluggish, the enemies are all the same, the ai is stupid, whoever directed the voice actors should just get fired etc etc. there could be a good game here, or at least a lot better than it is. I dont think they will be able to salvage this mess, but I hope they try.
