Heroes of Might and Magic® 2: Gold

I have been playing HOMM2 since 1996. This is my favorite turn based game of all time. It is the only HOMM version that I play. You can find hundreds of player made maps online that you can download and play. I've been playing this game off and on for over 25 years and still have over 60 maps left to try. I usually play a map back to back and score it. You can go wrong with this one.

A must have for lovers of the turn based genre. When I played the first game in the series, I thought it couldn't get better. -What a mistake I made! This game is imho THE best game of the series. Everything is balanced, you can make your own maps if you like. There's both up'n'downs depending on the side you choose. To win a game, you have to be good, nothing is left to chance and luck. I've spend so much time on this game, and I have enjoyed every hour. I still play it to this day

This is an easy game to recommend for anyone who likes fantasy games and turn-based strategy games. I love the unique fantasy world they created with many creatures that seem to be inspired by Greek myths like the Titans, Minotaurs, etc. The campaign story isn't that great and doesn't have the seriousness required to tell a good story, but it's fun to play single-player skirmish mode vs the AIs. I highly recommend this game if you can get over the aging graphics. Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3 are the best in the series, and both should be played. I suggest starting with this game (Heroes 2) if you are new to the series.

I find this to be an amazing release that is worth every penny. However, when I grew up playing this game, I always played it with the Expansion Pack installed. This comes with the Expansion Pack installed, already, but defaults to the Original game's castle themes. Now, if you like the castle themes from the original game, that's great. I, however, find the ones from the expansion to be far better and, being the ones I grew up with, to not hear them in this release is a real bummer.

I wasted hundreds of hours (probably) in the 1990s playing this game, but had gone on to Heroes 3, 4, and 5 and had made the mistake of giving my discs to an equally-addicted friend. Thanks to GoG I can play this again, and I have to say that this game not only holds up gameplay-wise to anything on the market today, but it also has reinstated itself as my all-time favorite HOMM game. I am once again finding myself up till 2 am and having to wrench myself away so I can function in RL the next day. You have been warned: this game will grab hold of your brain like a boa constrictor (okay a gentle, colorful boa constrictor that makes pretty noises). I won't go into the gameplay mechanics (others have done a brilliant job of that). The only thing I have to add to any of the other reviews is that I love the map editor for this game. Unlike subsequent editors for HOMM games, the creations from this one are truly random. You can create a map and there may only be one ore mine on the entire map. Or, you may be given 7 gold mines in the vacinity of your starting castle (or your enemy's!). The editor for HOMM3 was done using a small variety of templates in order to insure balance, but I found that it got old quickly. Anyway, this is well worth $9.99. It is a true classic.
