Unnecessarily clunky & unintuitive
I would like to start with saying that I really enjoy old school blobbers, crawlers etc. I do enjoy challenge and retro storytelling, i.e. a lot of text to read, long exposition, slower pacing and so on. Having said that, I really, really can't get through the controls and the general feel of this game. Almost nothing can be controlled with keyboard. You have to literally click everything to set every attack, spell, action. This could be simply avoided by having keybindings like (A)ttack, (D)efend, (C)ast, (E)scape, (S)hoot, (Q)uick cast and so on. The combat happens too often, there's no mechanic for avoiding the enemies/combat since you can't see them on the map... I'm a huge fan of M&M 4-5, so I may be biased in that regard - it's just that accessibility is very important for me to enjoy the game - having a support for an 80+ key controller is generally advisable for complex games like these instead of LEFT CLICKING EVERYTHING. This is incredible. Literally everything. I get the general idea and nostalgic feel, but the execution is not very good :( As other reviewers mentioned, it tries to emulate some games of the older era with missing QoL on purpose. The tech is old and deprecated (DirectMusic dependency in 2017, seriously?), the options are limited. Not recommended, sorry.

Old-school dungeon crawler
An interesting and weird game. Apparently a passion project in the making for 20 years. Reminds me of the old Wizardry series, and it very much shows the developer used to be involved with those. I think this game belongs to the old-school dungeon crawler category. If you like those kinds of games and are looking to scratch that itch, you could consider giving this game a go. Fair warning the game UI is very clunky and learning the game will require you to read up on the manual. The game is quite unforgiving in the beginning, and modern gamers might not be used to the amount of saving and reloading required. You also have to do a lot more trial and error guesswork than in modern games, because the game gives you less concrete information. It does get nicer to play after a few levels, as you characters become more competent and are no longer killed by a monster sneezing on them.

То, что нужно, и даже больше
Глубокая, масштабная и сложная ролевая игра в лучших традициях партийных RPG позапрошлого десятилетия (сложная в первую очередь недружелюбным интерфейсом). Желательно держать руководство под рукой, ибо опять же коварный интерфейс скрывает необходимые подробности. Тем не менее, игра поглощает с головой разнообразными подземельями и игровыми ситуациями (на одной карте мы рассекаем по подземным озерам на черепахе, на другой поднимаемся на самые вершины гор, с которых попадаем в парящую крепость злого волшебника, на третьей одолеваем полчища лавкрафтовских монстров за определенное время). Весьма рекоммендую.

One of the best dungeon crawers ever
Grimoire is definitely a must-play for everyone who likes the early Might & Magic and Wizardry games. It has suffered a rocky launch on steam but there have been several big updates since then. This is not a game that holds your hand - it can be frustrating at the beginning, but it becomes surprisingly addictive if you stick with it. PROTIP: Holding down Enter speeds up combat animations.
