You are Outlander. Once adrift upon the Ageless Sea, you now find yourself on the shores of a dying world. From the consuming darkness emerges a figure cloaked in white, the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, who burdens you with the task of hunting down the remaining Guardians of the Old World. You must journey into the vast gloom to explore ancient ruins, discover forgotten secrets and battle the horrors that lurk within.
Fueled by legendary Quake 1 technology, the veins of WRATH pump with the DNA of revered '90s shooters. WRATH embraces the timeless elements of classic titles such as DOOM, QUAKE, DUKE NUKEM 3D, BLOOD, UNREAL and HEXEN and carries them into the 21st century.
Equipped with an arsenal of 9 weapons of exceptional might and an inventory of 10 powerful artifacts, you must traverse ancient crypts, sunken ruins, corrupted temples and howling forests to bring death to your enemies. But do not underestimate your adversaries, for they are great in power and number. Your mind must be as sharp as your blade if you hope to survive the dangers ahead.
The world of WRATH is rich with engaging combat, diverse environments and captivating lore. Every element is deftly intertwined to create an authentic and enchanting experience as timeless as the games that inspired it.
• Explore a vast world shrouded in darkness, passionately crafted by the hands of expert Quake scene necromancers.
• Traverse 3 hubs and 15 enormous, interconnected levels crawling with hordes of enemies, lore and ancient secrets.
• Forge your path with an arsenal of 9 deadly weapons, each with multiple fire modes.
• Know your enemy. Many horrors lurk in the shadows, thirsting for your blood.
• Artifacts of great power lay hidden in the dark places of the world. Find them and dominate your enemies.
• Powered by the Legendary Quake 1 Tech, WRATH is an authentic, classic FPS in every way.
• Capped at 666 fps, WRATH will melt your soul and your Voodoo 2... But it's okay. Software Rendering is supported!
• Create your own worlds. WRATH is built from the ground up to be easily moddable. Make your own levels, weapons and characters. From day one, the very tools used to create WRATH will be available for all.
• Gib your friends in classic Multiplayer modes, powered by the renowned QuakeWorld netcode.
Dominate the world of WRATH with 3 other companions in 4 player co-op, LAN or online!
• Immerse yourself in a haunting soundscape born from the twisted minds of Andrew Hulshult (Quake Champions, Rise of the Triad, Dusk and Amid Evil) and Bjorn Jacobson (CyberPunk 2077, Hitman, EVE Online).
Positive:
I think overall it's amazing. Never had that much of fun with a fps in a long time.
The ruination blade is one of my favourite weapons. I really like that it opens so many possibilities in terms of movement (which feels very tight and responsive to me btw).
Especially that you can chain it together with bunnyhopping and go really fast because of this. Or that you can turn around in mid-air. great stuff. this blade is the first melee weapon in a fps game, i didn't instantly forget as soons as i got my hands on a gun.
The coach-gun is ok i guess, a bit underwhelming, but it sounds really nice and gets the job done.
The double barrel shotgun is my absolute favourite. It sounds perfect, it shreds through enemys and the secondary fire-mode can be very usefull around corners. With some practice, the secondary fire mode is also useful at mid to long ranges aaaand also it doesn't feel overpowered.
In short i absolutely love the double barrel.
The fang spitter is also very well done, i think. Sounds very powerful, tears through weak enemies and i love the fact that it stops enemies projectiles.
I didn't use the retcher very often. I find it very effective against stronger enemies and the idea behind it, is very cool (and also how it looks). But in the end i was fine, most of the time, with the other weapons.
It reminded me a lot of the grenade launcher in quake 1, which is my favourite weapon of all time.
I absolutely dig the level design, flow and how they look. really impressive and close to perfect.
Negative:
The savesystem has a weird quirk. when you place a soul tether and then later save your game at a shrine, and then load your (now older) soul-tether save, the save created at the shrine is lost. The other way around is fine.
Enemies have pathfinding issues. I often found them run against walls. Especially when i was around a corner or a behind a doorway.
It's early access, so this review could change to a 4 or 5 star later, but the demo as it stands gives me some mixed feelings. What this suffers from right now is too little enemy variety, every single room feels like an arena fight (i.e. new DOOM), not enough weapons and some slightly janky movement (character tends to keep running off for a few steps after forward is released and this makes the platforming unnecessarily irritating at times). Also, no strafe hopping!?! I could see this improving immensely if done right, but I'm currently teetering on the knife's edge if I like it or not. Full disclosure here, I beat 2 full levels and started the 3rd and just... lost interest entirely; uninstalled. I'll come back and check this out again after full-release, it does feel fun for the most part, but right now the pacing and environments all feels all a bit too repetitive for my tastes, especially with the modern resurgence of "old-school" fps games coming out left and right this just doesn't seem to be doing enough to compete with extremely high-quality games like DUSK, AMID EVIL or ULTRAKILL.
Never played the original quake so my opinion is nostalgia-free.
For me this is the result a late 90s shooter with Dark Soul's atmospheric ambience combined.
Every weapon has unique properties and *feels* powerful.
All in all, an amazing game.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
