A DEEP SPACE ADVENTURE BY SEAN CLARK IN COLLABORATION WITH FILMMAKER STEVEN SPIELBERG
An asteroid the size of a small moon is on a crash course toward Earth, and only NASA veteran Boston Low has the expertise to stop it. Along for the ride are award-winning journalist Maggie Robbins and internationally renowned geologist Ludger Brink.
Once the wayward asteroid is nuked into a safe orbit, the trio conducts a routine examination of the rocky surface.
What they uncover is anything but routine.
Low, Brink and Robbins unwittingly trigger a mechanism that transforms the asteroid into a crystal-like spacecraft. The team is hurtled across the galaxy to a planet so desolate, Brink is moved to name it Cocytus, after the 9th circle of Hell in Dante’s inferno. The bleak landscape was obviously once home to a highly evolved civilization, with remnants of sophisticated architecture, advanced technology and an intricate network of underground tunnels.
But no Cocytans.
Who were the original inhabitants of this once rich empire-turned-wasteland? What are those apparitions that mysteriously appear from time to time? Why have Low, Robbins, and Brink been brought to this place? And how can Low keep his team from unraveling in the face of such uncertainty? To return to Earth, they must dig for answers, both on the planet’s surface and deep within themselves.
From the combined talents of LucasArts and legendary Steven Spielberg comes an epic adventure that plunges headlong into the very core of the unknown. And takes you with it.

I'm sure this game was a success when it first appeared, but this must have been based exclusively on the pretty graphics, which are passable even after all this time. Unfortunately, everything else is subpar. The puzzles are very unintuitive and nonsensical, which leads to an obtuse, unengaging story. You will most likely need to use a walkthrough, especially in the second part of the game. Even so, the constant backtracking, combined with unskippable and very long animations, dialogues and audio ques from the main character during almost every action, makes the entire playthrough very tedious and boring.
I'm an avid adventure games player, I love all the classics from Sierra, Microids and the likes. I wanted to try this game for so long, and I had such high expectations, that the dissapointment was tenfold. I don't know if I can force myself to finish this game.
So it's a Lucasfilm point+click adventure in collaboration with Steven Spielberg, hence it must be awesome, right?
Sadly, no.
The Dig is a good game, but in my mind, it is not on the same level as other Lucasfilm titles. The game starts out well, with good writing and characters, decent voice-acting and nice atmosphere, but quickly becomes boring. Furthermore, either the game design or programming seems sloppy, as I ran into a situation where it was impossible to make progress without starting over and doing things in a different order- unusual for the high-quality Lucasfilm titles.
Unless you have completed most or all other Lucasfilm games, this game is ihmo not a must-have.
As other reviewers have noted, "The Dig" is by no means a terrible game. It has its charm--sympathetic voice acting, beautifully-drawn backgrounds, and a story full of potential. Sadly, "potential" is the key word for this game. The game felt patched together in some ways. The characters (with the exception of Commander Low) had inconsistent personalities; some of their actions seemed out of character and like they occurred just to move the story into the planned direction. When you started to appreciate the potential depth of the story, the characters would surprise you with totally inappropriate dialogue that reminded you that you were playing a game. The puzzles were... jesus, some were tedious and cryptic. They weren't even cryptic in a mysterious, engaging way--just, well, puzzling. I felt like I had missed essential context for interpreting some puzzles (like the service drone puzzle), and sometimes the cues indicating when you had completed something correctly were misplaced or unclear. Even after consulting a walkthrough to get through a few puzzles, I thought "how would I ever have arrived at this answer?". It felt like the game accidentally withheld information from the story that would have made the puzzles solvable (but still challenging). The dealbreaker of this game is definitely the ending, which is really unsatisfying and shallow.
The verdict: You can pass on "The Dig" unless it comes your way for free or is a relic of nostalgia for you.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
