Men of War: Assault Squad features a completely new cooperative skirmish game mode with access to five different nations (Russia, Germany, USA, Commonwealth and, for the first time ever in the Men of War series, Japan) as well as increased realism and accessibility.
Players can get behind the controls of a tank to smash through obstacles, crush soldiers under their tracks and fire high-explosive shells at enemy emplacements, they can even take control of individual soldiers as they fight. As in previous games in the series, Men of War: Assault Squad includes the unique "direct control" feature which enables players to be in command of any unit using the WASD controls, rather than pointing and clicking.
Different historical settings and battlegrounds for every nation presented in the game allowing players to face distinct varieties of enemies and tactics
Unique hero units with powerful abilities such as increasing units' firepower, boosting morale or providing other advantages to defeat the enemy against all odds
Bonuses featuring remote controlled bombs that can flatten entire residential blocks, airstrikes to destroy incoming tank columns, special "For the Motherland!" charge attacks and many more
Improved and dynamic AI ensures that no two missions in the game will play out the same way, making each battle a new experience against an AI that really fights back
A great choice of various locations including Western Europe to Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Pacific area
The ability to play together with up to four friends in LAN play
New multiplayer maps and game settings
Improved multiplayer providing authentic use of equipment and vehicles
Overhauled infantry squads and the ability to purchase specific soldiers
More realistic weapon behavior and penetration values
A reworked artillery system providing innovative assault and defense strategies
New types of ammunition which increase the tanks' strength
NOTE: Men of War: Assault Squad is affected by the GameSpy shutdown, multiplayer is available only via LAN.
Please be advised that Windows 10 operating system will receive frequent hardware driver and software updates following its release; this may affect game compatibility

I've never been into WW2 combat or games, or anything WW2. But I took a chance and bought this game knowing not what to expect. This game's blown me away. I've went my whole strategy career not even knowing this type of game existed.
It's basically a war simulator (Editor included ;)) with surprising depth. Every battle is an actual battle, and it's not like most WW2 games I've 'seen' that try to be all Hollywood, instead it's basically a long list of maps that you wage war on, and it's fun as hell. You can control every unit, their supply ... you'll see a tank roar over the tree-covered ridge ahead, and panic—your AT unit's behind a rock, you swing the bastard around and blast the enemy tank's turret out of commission.
It's great fun and highly recommended. Glad I made the purchase. This will be a game played for years, now we just gotta get Assault Squad 2 on here, and Call to Arms.
I'm very suprised at that! So I'm going to add a second review.
Not that I need say much about why this game is good, Flesh420.613 has already said it in his lonesome review.
But I do feel the need to knock a star off, as it's not perfect. The game does have it's bugs and design flaws. Such as the "infinite ammo" bug that affects enemy troops (and allied troops under full AI control). It's definately caused by their item counts in their inventories not being deducted when they reload weapons. This but has been in-situ since the very earliest Faces of War and even Heroes of WW2 incarnations, and despite being ragingly obvious it's NEVER been fixed in all these years. Even MoW AS 2 on Steam still has this bug! I bet the new MoW:Origins revamp is ditto!
Keeping your individual soldiers supplied can be a micromanagement nightmare too.
The GEM Editor is also very clunky, buggy, unintuitive and frequently CTDs.
MoWAS runs quite reasonably with OK detail settings even on potato PCs (in my experience).
I'm suprised the GOG MoW scene is so dead though. The forum is as deserted as the Greenland icecap and the fact that (till now) there was only Flesh's single review amazes me. Over on Steam the scene is alive and kicking!
Never tried out the MoW series so since it's on sale for literally a apple & A Egg i added it into my library.
This game for being from 2009 is so immersive! Like you are part off the actual war! It does require some micromanagement but not as ridiculously bad as most RTS games now'a days.
It all plays out so well , It's so much fun to just watch the front play out! Don't get to attached to your soldiers , because they will be shot at some point because off your terrible micromanagement ...
The men of war series are legendary for their tactical depth and epic battles.
Assault Squad is no different, but it is more focused on multiplayer than its predecessor and brings a bunch of quality of life improvements over the base game, making it easier to manage the large-scale battles.
In single player it offers some basic campaigns with missions that vary from capturing points in a linear fashion to a "last stand" style thing where you defend your base against waves of attackers. The "story" is paper-thin and the dialogue or terrible, but you aren't here for that - you are here to obliterate tanks :)
The engine also has some improvements with graphics being slightly better and animations smoother. And Japan becomes a "proper" faction with voiced units and a campaign.
One downside is lack of variety in units: because the game is MP focused all factions essentially got "gamified" - they have the same "classes" of equipment (infantry, light vehicle, tank, artillery, etc) with a couple of choices per class that fall into a normalized army list (light howitzer, heavy howitzer, self-propelled light howitzer...). They still have their own particularities and uniqueness but it feels a lot less "asymmetric" and realistic.
The AI is still dumb as a brick: they send masses of troops straight into your defenses in a haphazard formation only to get massacred, eventually overwhelming you with numbers or a some big tank like a Tiger (if you let them that is). Thankfully there are SP mods that bring more interesting missions with better structure and slightly more intelligent AI that makes good use of artillery and things to give you a run for your money.
Disappointingly, there are no bots in MP. You still need to convince a few friends to play.
This game is still great. However I still prefer the original MoW because there are more mods and more community content for it. Strongly recommend this one but grab the original MoW too - they are usually cheap.
A game like this and came across this one. I have been playing it non stop for awile now and it is still fun. Great RTS and the graphics are very well done, for the price this game is a steal.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
