Lumo brings 3D isometric gameplay with a twist. Coupling a insane amount of secrets and puzzles in it's diverse levels. While clearly aimed at a younger audience, the game tries to bridge this by adding a ton of secrets and "of the beaten track" methods of playing the game, which it very much succeeds in. The levels are spanning, and while simple on the surface (and mechanically not that hard) the game allows for those younger to enjoy a fun and interesting game... while also stuffing the game to the brim with references and nostalgic throwbacks for those older gamers. This brings a duality forth, where younger players might have an interesting game, and those older gamers who find the mechanics to simple to be challenging, can still get a ton of challenge trying to find all the MANY secrets and collectibles. There is one major issue i have with the game though: it's controls are VERY sub-par with mouse and keyboard. I found the game a total letdown until i hooked up my steam controller with it. The controls still aren't great, but compared to KB&M they are a world of difference. Another issue is that I encountered quite a few graphical glitches. None of them broke the gameplay or puzzles, but they were definitely immersion breaking... which is what the game does rely on quite a bit for it's many references and atmospheric storytelling. Overal, if you have a younger child or you enjoy collecting / exploring secrets - this game will scratch both those itches.. but if you just enjoy getting to the end of a game, you will most likely find the title way to simple mechanically.

Controller mandatory

Neat pretty platform game that requires a controller. Without one I pretty much died at the title screen... A bit hard to see where you'll land when jumping but jump is still your best friend. Really nice game.

Nearly unplayable due to broken inputs

With a gamepad the character often stops moving when you’re not pushing the stick in the exact direction the game wants. This is a real problem in this game when you’re trying to jump on moving platforms or avoid traps. It’s crazy the devs never fixed this after all the time that has pasted since release. If the game was playable then I would actually enjoy it… It has a nice retro feel to it and not-too-difficult puzzles (up to the point I played). Too bad.

Bought -90% off, still asked for refund.

5 minutes impression: - detected my resolution wrong, cutting off the back buttons in the menu - not detected any of my three USB controllers - cannot handle more than 2 button press at the same time + on keyboard you need to press 2 directions + the jump = unplayable - terrible camera view for jumping in 3D I love platform/puzzle games, but haven't seen such bad controls since the early 2D->3D transitions.

Not bad, but could have been better

When I was a kid, these were always the kinds of games I was curious about but never had (aside from Mario RPG), so I can only critique from a modern perspective..It's a charming little isometric puzzle-platformer that, as Temko.841 said, it full of references. (Specifically, references to the 1980s) For whatever reason, I didn't encounter any of the graphical or input glitches some of the other reviewers complained about. In fact, the Linux version worked flawlessly for me, aside from an oddity in the gamepad mapping UI where it called one of my buttons "Action 2" at first but then correctly gave the X-Box 360 controller button name when I asked to re-map it and pressed the button that was already the default. With a gamepad, the controls are generally good and I really like the support for customizing how they map to the isometric axes... but the block-pushing+hopping puzzle in the ice area is a frustrating momentary difficulty spike. You should NOT have to do precision jumping on slippery ice blocks that will push and shatter if your attempt to overcorrect causes you to push them by mistake... and I find playing a little Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy every day to have a relaxing zen to it! (no joke) The fact that there's a delay before the "respawn block" button will work just adds insult to injury. It does have some unskippable mini-games (eg. a minecart stage), but they're fairly easy and I'd have preferred if it didn't hide the total number of some of the collectables. The most glaring wart, in my opinion, is how it starts you out by asking you to pick a gender and color, then requires you to spend a minute as an ultra-generic kid walking to the Tron-esque digitizer before the game starts. It's pointless, feels very tacked-on, and gives a poor first impression. That said, pixel-art would have been better. Whatever it is that my childhood has left me wanting from these games is tied to the distinctive isometric look that I would sometimes glimpse.
