Opis
Far Cry® 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, takes many of the great ideas from the previous game and improves upon them, making a pulse-pounding, high-speed shooter that roars through the beautiful, if sere, environments of Central Africa. With stunning visuals and deep gameplay, this game takes everything you liked about Far Cry® and ramps it up to 11.

You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to do what it takes to take down the Jackal, a dirty arms merchant who has made your new homeland a war-torn hell.

You must identify and exploit your enemies’ weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning, and of course, brute force.

This is the Fortune's Edition of Far Cry® 2, which is patched up (like every GOG game) to the most recent version which includes the Fortunes Pack DLC that added three new weapons and two new vehicles to the game, as well as several new multiplayer maps.

  • One of the most interactive and destructible environments ever made for an open world game, with special attention paid to a realistic fire engine that's a pyromaniac's dream come true.
  • Fight for different rival factions as you confront the ugly truths about conflict in a poor, war-torn country.
  • Great story complemented by fantastic open world first-person gameplay!

Way more pros than cons

Despite all of its cons, I was amazed by its pros: - Beautiful and immersive world. It's a game that feels like you really are in a world of its own. Not just a "place" (like Deus Ex or BioShock locales), but a real, wide and surprising world. You could roam around and just soak in all the beauty and details. - Options. Yes, missions are all similar (not to mention the never-ending checkpoints), but you are mostly free to tackle them the way you want. SInce it's not script-based, no event ever plays in the same way: you could try to tackle a mission ten times, and it would develop differently every time. - Combat options. The above it's true for combat as well: you have many weapons to choose from, but you have to compromise (due to its three-slots system). So you have to choose your combat style and choose the weapons accordingly, forcing you to adapt your combat style to the resources available. Save for trying a different weapons setup later, and invent a different approach. Almost limitless combinations. I won't go into the negatives here, because they have already been discussed a lot. I just add that, despite the hours of fun I had (I think 60 hours of gameplay), this game left me with a sense of sadness in the end. Maybe it was because the final part is mostly linear (and after all the previous freedom it feels oppressive); maybe because it felt like all my previous efforts - in the end - amounted to nothing. I don't know. I mostly had a blast playing it (with the occasional frustration), but it left me with this tinge of sadness - so I don't know if I want to play it again (like I thought I would, while playing it). Anyway it was a hell of a ride, and I'm truly grateful for this experience :-)

A interesting, but flawed game

Thing to note, I played this game on the PS3 and have not played the PC version. Hence, I am not going to talk about the control system of the game, rather the game world and what I liked and disliked. To start with the game looks great, the fire animation is well done and I alway enjoyed setting things on fire. You can get allies that can rescue if you die and revieve you somewhere near. The weapons degrade over time. The story is decent and the game is open world. However, the game suffer from problems. The main problem is that most of the time is, well, it is dull. Much of the time is spent of getting from point A to point B, kill whatever enemies are in the way and on the way back, well, kill those same enemies again as enemies respawn when you get far away enough. This coupled with the weapon-breakdown mechanic is just annoying. I have spent so much time on just replacing weapons from weapon shops or hideouts as the weapons the enemies drop are in so bad condition that they break after a few shots. Another problem is how the enemy vehicles work, most of the time they stay on the roads, so you can avoid them by sneaking in the fields, however, sometimes... sometimes you will be all alone in a field far away from a road and "vrom" half secund later get run over, dead on the spot, which means that you have to go back to a savehouse to talk with an allied to save you again. Later on, the enemy vehicles have mortars and, well, if you drive a vehicle and run into one of those, back to the savehouse with you as they kill you with a single shell. The malaria just feel like it is there because of "oh not a lot of shooters have done that" and don´t really do anything for the story or gameplay. If you want to have specific weapons I hope you enjoy treasure hunting or rather walk around and fall over the diamons you need, but then again, most of the time is spent attacking places and not defending so weapons like IEDs and such are more or less useless.

good ideas in a boring story and bad VA

This game has amazing gunplay, weapons will start to jam after being used for a while and you have to scavenge weapons from enemies or go to an armoury to get new guns. There's great details like rocket launcher backblast setting grass on fire, and healing animations that are relatively accurate to what kind of damage you were receiving. The biggest issues are the missions being boring, the voice acting being atrocious, and there isn't really any incentive to help your buddies throughout the game. Missions boil down to: Talk to guy, guy gives you money, drive to place and kill dude or blow something to hurt the opposite faction. Missions are really short to complete, I never found myself taking more than 5-10 minutes to actually finish the objective, which is really short compared to the 10 minutes it takes to drive there, and if you want to get some better weapons it will take even longer. You have to either drive to the objective, or drive to a bus station to travel closer and then drive the rest of the way, that is if you don't want to walk the whole way. While it's more realistic than fast travel points, it can get annoying after a while if you spend most of your time driving. There is no reason to side with one faction over another, and everyone you encounter will attack you. It would have been much more interesting to have the faction you help more defend you, while members of the other faction attack you. Voice acting is horribly boring and fast, people talk extremely quickly which results in poorly-paced dialogue. After receiving mission instructions from the UFLL or APR, you get a phone call from a buddy asking for help. You could abandon your current mission and help them, but there is no reason to. The only benefit a buddy might have is reviving you if you 'die', giving you a second chance.

The best hardcore Far Cry experience

To me, this is the best Far Cry game out there. Of course it has its flaws but what it offers much better things than other games in the series. It's kind of a sandbox and not being able to capture outposts is a letdown, especially because of how fast the enemies respawn, but it's much more fun. Because of the sandbox-like setup, it doesn't offer cinematic episodes like the later games, but that also means you can do everything with your preferred way. Even though there isn't much of story, at least it feels more realistic. Also, Far Cry 2 still has the best physics in the series.

Repetitive and Boring

I bought this game on Steam about a year after it was released and I've since tried playing it about 5 times. I get about 1/4th of the way through the game then give up. Not because it's hard. No. It's because it's repetitive and boring. The levels are basically re-spawned enemies in the same location you visited 3 missions ago. Not only that, but enemies constantly spawn at every check point through-out the game, which is simply annoying as hell and unforgivable. The graphics (at the time) were next gen stuff and the game has pretty good FPS combat, but.. it's just too repetitive and tedious. The first game had many new areas to explore. It sometimes got repetitive, but there was always new places. Not the same place over and over. Plus you're sick in this game. Seems like a good idea, but no. You have to do missions to get medicine so your guy doesn't pass out during another mission. And travel in this game takes forever because the map is just too damn big. If you don't have a vehicle, you'll be hoof'n it for a while.
