And that is why you might have a little difficulty adjusting to the pace of the game. This game is more of a FPS-stealth hybrid and if you keep that in mind the game immediately becomes more fun. A lot of people mention re-spawning guard posts and that will be a problem if you try to destroy each one. Until you realize, like I did, that you can breeze through them on a vehicle 8 times out of 10. The other two times some reinforcements will block your way and test your skills :). Also if you are having a hard time on the road you have the option to either fast travel or use a boat and this game has some very well developed waterways. This game is open enough that you can change from stealth to commando just as soon as you switch your weapon. And you can try different tactics in multiple replays. The AI is maybe a bit too smart: If you use an un-silenced weapon, enemies will converge on you. If you kill someone with a silenced weapon and an enemy sees the body, they will raise the alarm. And if you stand near a light source, well the bullets will fly :) The story is done well enough that it remains enjoyable throughout and the unique buddy system allows you to increase your history with friendly NPCs. All in all this is a great game if you are willing to give it little time to work its magic.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Africa Edition

The Bad: Some annoying glitches (floating/disappearing characters/objects) The Good: Everything else The atmosphere, the music, the story, the gameplay...it's all tight and beautiful and compelling stuff! I used to think Stalker was the best open world FPS game I've played by Far Cry 2 is like someone played Stalker and said 'What can we do to improve this'? Guns actually hit what you're aiming at. Characters interact with each other in realistic ways (a lot of towns will have NPCs going on extended conversations and animations completely by themselves and enemies will do things like rescue downed allies and even carry their wounded away). Cars are fun to drive and just walking through the enormous and detailed jungles and deserts I found extremely moody and intriguing. I didn't feel this game was artificially difficult, in fact you have a LOT of advantages if you know where to look for them. You start off with a rocket launcher, you can get 'buddies' who will rescue you from death, you can stabilize yourself if you're almost dead (with wonderfully gruesome animations). Tons of guns, upgrades, voice acting throughout, great landscapes. The missions are simple and do repeat but this is the kind of game you can play either at a stretch or just pick it up and play for a couple minutes of mayhem. Intrusive cutscenes are few, you're not locked off to locations, and everywhere the jungle/desert feels like as much an enemy as the mercenaries shooting at you. GREAT experience, improved everything about one of my earliest favorite games!

This is the only FC title you need play.

Far Cry lead to two game series: Crysis and Far Cry 2 (and the games that didn't happen after it) and at this time, in 2019, I assert that you only needed to play two games related to the original title. They are this game and Crysis. Far Cry 2 is a game of great menace, hardship, heat and atmosphere. You are unleashed in the malaria-ridden jungles of a central african nation and asked to navigate your own sort of spin off the great 'Blood Diamond' film from a couple of years earlier. Your survival is not a foregone conclusion. The jungle shade and undergrowth aids stealth. The rusting, deteriorating guns fight you even as you fight others with them. Basically every NPC with whom you cooperate wants something in return from you, the ones who are genuinely kind to you are few and far between. The whole feel of the game is convincingly dire and savage to an almost mythological extent. Completing the story-line is by no means central to experiencing the game. Play this game if you have a hankering for being alone and quite hapless, with only the scratchiest of weaponry, crouching around in the middle of a hostile, primordial environment and simply trying to survive at the cost of dozens of lives. (you can play the game some other way, a more gung-ho way, if you want, but that isn't my style) I found it all to be really fun and atmospheric. I sunk deep into it.

It's ok but gets tedious

Played this a few years ago and liked it at first but just became bored of it being the same old same old. Traveling is anywhere is a pain in the A*** as you clear a hostile checkpoint of enemies to find they have respawned 2 minutes later and the same battle ensues over and over. The claim of being open world is a little overblown as it feels more like a series of connected tunnels with some open areas. The combat is fun at first but it just becomes something that gets in the way going between missions and can have a negative effect as your weapon health will suffer greatly. There are good ideas here but they just don't work for me.
