Aged and janky but good-looking FPS

Far Cry is average on many layers; story, main characters, enemy design, weapon choices, level design, etc. What is good about it is the look of the levels however, the CryEngine still holds up (to some extent) and it's definitely pretty to look at. There's some interestings twists and turns in the story that I actually didn't expect but other than that it's a pretty OK story for an FPS. The difficulty is quite hard and I think it's because it's partly bugged as the enemies can see you on a waaay to long distance. In conclusion; I'd say the game is worth a playthrough but that's about it. There's nothing really special about it and it's before Ubisoft really got their formula for the Far Cry games; heck it's not even developed by Ubisoft themselves but by CryTek.

Compatibility quest is too difficult

I haven't even tried this damn game yet. Want to know why? It doesn't work. Every time I've tried to launch it, it comes up with the same thing... A black 1024x768 window, regardless of your resolution or fullscreen setting, which is always on top http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=346063230 A "Critical Exception" error message behind said black window http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=346063746 Despite all my attempts and all my searches, I still can't get it to work. I've tried the direct EXE and the GOG launcher, I've tried all the compatibility modes, I've even tried turning down lighting as some have said fixes the issue. For now, I give up. I can't find the damn solution, I've tried everything and yet nothing works. Even Fallout 3 worked at one point for me, but this just can't be done. Buyer beware, this game might not even launch properly.

Just not a good game

Look past the graphics. The save points are fixed and usually not logically selected requiring you to do a lot over when you die. It seems like no matter what difficulty I pick, the enemies always have perfect aim. Playing the game is a chore and not fun as others have pointed out. If the save points were better or you could save wherever you want and the AI was worse on easier difficulties, it might be different. Worth $3 on sale though, I guess.

Still fun

As for the single player, I only played a few levels. My friends and I really just played the game's multiplayer, and I liked it well enough. My biggest draw to Far Cry has always been the tropical island setting and its great graphics. (See below.) I know some people were complaining on here about the insane AI that can see and shoot through walls like nothing. This is actually a bug that was introduced in the final official patch (1.4). However, if you want to fix that and other bugs, to add some nice features to the game and improve the graphics even beyond the highest settings, then you simply must try the FCAM mod by Garcry. (Just do a google search for it.) It adds widescreen support, the 64-bit graphics content, and the AGM mod for improved graphics. It is a must-have for Far Cry. You won't regret it.

Solid, Challenging Sandbox Shooter

The first half of this game is amazing. The amount of freedom which you can pursue your goal is great. the control is tight, the guns have a nice punch to it, and challenge that encourages clever, 1-against-100 tactics. The second half is not as great, newer enemies make the game more frustrating. But overall this game comes highly recommended.
