The game that kicked Doom 3 in its face

In before the Far Cry, there were two kinds of FPS-es. The ones that used the Quake 3 (IDtech 3) engine and the ones that used the Unreal ones. And then, out of nothing came Crytek and roflstopmed Doom 3 and its claustrophobic corridors. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the game that showed Carmack that one can make real time shadows with nearly unlimited view distance. Enough of the history lesson. Far Cry as a game was quite revolutionary back in its time (and still is). Mostly sandbox like, you can chose which path you take. The graphics are awesome (even in 2009), the AI is pretty smart -altough a few times a brick can outsmart it- and the level design is just amazing. Quite a few times you can reach your goal on foot through the jungle, on a conveniently placed boat/jeep and even on gliders! The one letdown in the game is the introduction of those mutant things. For me, they totally threw off the gameplay for many reasons. They have no AI -if you get within a certain radius they go for you-, they instant die when touching water and simply, they are just ridiculously overpowered compared to the mercenaries. The multi-player is pretty great. Reminds me of Enemy Territory. Haven't played it in ages, so I have no idea if its active at all. All in all, buying this game is a nobrainer for anyone who likes FPS games. PS.: The big dual rocket launchered mutant thingies weakspot is not that glowing bit on their chest -they take less damage there-. Aim for the head!

Best FPS I've ever played!

This is something real special. The jungle graphics are beautiful. There are many different ways to explore to try to meet the next checkpoint. Its fun to try to go unnoticed as long as possible before you give it to the special forces. The only drawback is the never ending flow of Trigens. It would be a perfect game without them.

This game has it all. -Very fun story. -The most beautiful graphics ever. -Genius stereotype characters. -The ex special forces. -The redneck mercenaries. -The mad sientist. -cool trucks, boats, gliders, etc. -A nice snipinh mode. Enjoy playing Your friend V

Technological wonder

As time passes by the technology behind Far Cry grows old but the question is: how does the game hold up today? Far Cry is a really difficult game. I've playing FPS games for almost 20 years so I know what I'm doing. There is no healing factor, only a bar of health and a bar of armor. You replenish them by picking up health packs (which you can't carry with you) and armor packs so it's really old school when it comes to that. You can't take a lot of hits before you drop dead. The challenge of the game is steep but you get a real feeling of accomplishment when you reach a checkpoint (no quick save option) and you still have enough health to go on. The only real problem with the game is mainly the second half of the game when mutants appear. Introducing new types of enemies is a good thing but it gets a bit insane when "trained" mutants with rocket launchers attack you from all sides and you die from one hit (2/5 setting on the difficulty scale, the mutants, of course, take a few rockets to the head before they hit the ground). The story is not really brilliant and you won't really care much about it. The graphics and sound are still quite good, considering the game's age but the effect is nowhere near what it was when it first came out (it was, by far, the most graphically advanced game of the time, coming out before Doom 3 and Half-Life 2). All in all it's still a great game well worth your money and time, especially if you like a good challenge!

Great for it's time, but only good now

I only played the demo for this back in the day, and wasn't impressed due to being targeted by every soldier on the island seemingly at once. It felt cheap and it really rattled my cage. Now, about twelve years later, I do like this game. I understand I was trying to play this game like DOOM or Hexen, running around the map like an idiot with no respect for line of sight of my enemies or the sound I was making trampling through the brush. After playing through Far Cry 2 this game makes so much more sense. Not to say it doesn't feel cheap at times, but I do know if I approach each battle with tactics in mind all will work out. Eventually. One thing to keep in mind is that certain reflections don't seem to work properly in any OS post-XP, such as the reflection of the mountains in the sea. I don't think most people will even notice this, but those that played it back in the day apparently will. I do have access to an old gamer laptop from 2007, so that is how I am playing. If I didn't I would play it on my current W10 laptop and would still have a ton of fun. I believe Far Cry to be worth a purchase. While a little rough around the edges, the game rewards those that take the time to learn how to play it properly.
