I'd ignored recent events that should have been warning shots across the bow of my soul, from my wife's brush with death to the anti-pirate ramblings of an Australian gazillionaire. If only I'd chosen a different path, LeChuck might still be dead and the Ultimate Insult might have remained a mystery. If I'd never picked up a sword, the grog-swilling pirates of the Tri-Island Area might be unthreatened by the forces of gentrification and demonic heckfire. Definitely the weakest in the series, but it's still a very well crafted game with its own sense of style; the 2d backdrops are gorgeous and yeah the 3d models aren't the best but they still have a wackiness that can be appreciated. The plot takes a daring risk with a new villain taking center stage and is arguably the most interesting in the series. Puzzles can be brutal but they still make sense in that zany Monkey Island fashion, plus GOG have kindly provided a hintbook with the game so you can't really complain there. As a follow up to the amazing epic that was The Curse of Monkey Island, it was never going to measure up, but it's still a worthy entry in the series and definitely memorable with plenty of funny moments.
This is a very good and way underrated adventure game from Lucas Arts. It is often dismissed because of its awkward keyboard and mouse controls, but it was really designed to be played with a gamepad. Escape from Monkey Island features a good story full of clever satire, some well designed puzzles, and lots of memorable new and returning characters. It does have some frustrating parts, but the rest of the game more than makes up for that, so if you have a gamepad laying around, I hightly recommend giving this game a try. It is a worthy addition to the Monkey Island series :)
ABOUT TIME!
I recently started replaying this series, imagine my joy when I see that the 4th game is finally available through GOG.
I started the series with Monkey Island One. I fell in love with the story and characters. I didn't really care that much for the humor in the first two games but the stories were great. The second game ended in a very strange manner... left me confused. I love MI 1 and 2... But, to be honest I thought the third was more enjoyable....
The third game was beautifully animated, not to say that the first two games weren't state of the art... But the third in my opinion was much more humorous, while the story was just as exciting if not more exciting. The third game with it's brilliant voice acting and beautiful art work took the franchise to the next level for me.
Then of course I played the 4th game and at first I admit the controls and CGI was a little difficult to overcome. But, the game to me anyways has aged pretty gracefully regardless of being caught up in the worst era of CGI where CGI was gimmicky and often didn't work and ruined franchises... It actually looks pretty good given that it's cartoony and never had to look realistic. It's stylized with age... as well as appropriately aged. There were much worse attempts from that era....and games that have aged far worse. Gabriel Knight III comes to mind and Simon 3D.... The problem with other video game series that continuously changed their appearance is that it was some times difficult to get back into that universe. It felt discontinuous or broken. Where as Monkey Island 4 at the time shocked fans with it's controls and graphics...the story, characters is consistent.
I have replayed this game as many times as the others, I've been through the 4th game about 6 times now or more. It's not a perfect game, some of the story choices are outlandish or questionable...Over all though, I find myself coming back to it. I didn't realize when I first played it that I would...
