Immersive but bad combat and story

What this game does well is adherence to 40K lore and visuals. The atmosphere is fantastic, you really feel like you are a Rogue Trader in 40k environments. That is where the game stops doing things well. The story is incomprehsnible and disorganized, basically being a string of seemingly unrelated events that don't make sense until the last 5 minutes of the game, and even then only with a lot of squinting between the lines and deductions. It feels like the writers just said "wouldn't it be cool if this happened next" and then ran out of budget and desperately tried to tie everything together in the end. Its very much "and then" storytelling instead of "therefore". It relies a lot on exposition. Villains and plot threads get setup and then abandoned suddenly without explanation. The writing is likewise mostly insufferable as well. Its overly verbose most of the time, not quite as bad as Divinity Original Sin but still completely unrealistic in terms of how actual humans talk. There are also tech priests that constantly meander through paragraphs of bizzare, inpenetrable techonospeak, characters that speak in riddles, and other nonsense. Its basically "kid trying to sound smart by using lots of big words" kind of energy. That said, there were a few interesting companions but they hardly spoke enough for it to matter. The combat is easily the worst part. Everytime you level up, you have to tediously read dozens of options, most of which are garbage, a few are ok, and others are totally overpowered. Some talents give +4 to damage when enemies have thousands of health, while others let you stunlock entire armies. And they're also overly complicated too with quadratic formulas for calculating the stat effects. The progression is vertical, getting bigger and bigger numbers and not actually tactical with abilities that allow you to make interesting moment to moment decisions. Its all about optimizing your math to do silly amounts of damage. Very dissapointed.

I wanted to love this

Some fights are unbalanced to the point of not being fun and the developer won't fix it. The ending wasn't satisfying since the character I spent so much time romancing just leaves me. It get lore wrong regarding Navigator houses. Their leader isn't accurately depicted and allows a union with a non-navigator which is banned even for a rogue trader. I won't get the DLC because of these.

Combat is awful and basic

I expected a tactical challenge with lots of decisions to make. Instead I found nothing but getting ambushed by superior number of enemies, spamming characters special attacks (because their basic attacks on average do 2-6 damage) which kill them all in 2 turns, or boss fights that you have to look up the trick to win. There were no tactical decisions. Its designed to spam multiple special attacks, buffs and debuffs every turn. You do it in the right order and combat is over. Its never a back and forth tides of battle encounter. Unless its a boss battle then you have to figure out the trick because its can down your characters in one attack and sometimes attacks twice a turn. Level up choices were very unclear and made no sense, so good luck making a viable build. This should of been a visual novel. An RPG is supposed to give you different ways to solve problems. This game railroads you into situation after situation with no prep or input from you.

Little buggy but solid experience

Game is a little rough around the edges in some areas but I ran into nothing gamebreaking. If you have bought an Owlcat game at release before you should know what to expect by now. There are a lot of people reviewing on this website who are frankly hypercritical and embellishing. The quality of the combat and storytelling is great. The combat has more in common with XCOM than either of their previous Pathfinder games. Lots of focus in synergies and a robust perk system that is a little overwhelming at first but they offer a fairly cheap respec option early in the game. The world is very well realized and faithful to the source material. Anyone familiar with 40k is in for a treat. Interested to see how they're going to flesh this out if they put out any dlc.

Nope

I've been a fan of the 40k setting since ~2000. It's my favourite sci-fi setting, by all rights I should be hooked on this game. And yet I can't get into it. Owlcat seems to think constant flowery, overly verbose writing is good writing. When there's a noble in his comfortable chambers trying to impress someone, or if it's narrative description, sure, that works. When a naval officer is trying to maintain order in a rapidly escalating situation and slowly, theatrically vomits up a stream of dramatic adjectives, it absolutely does not. All it makes me think of is a bottom tier writer being very impressed with himself because he blew way past the acceptable word count and married a thesaurus, which as one might suspect absolutely destroys immersion. That works hand in hand with the voice acting. Everyone is giving a very slow, theatrical performance. Again, that works for some characters and situations, but for most it does not. I don't blame the VA themselves for this, but whoever directed them completely missed the tone for nearly every character in nearly every scenario. And as a minor pet peeve: every single time the RT's family name is uttered Von Valancius the speaker emphasises the Von part, which is the exact opposite of how to use that word in a name. It also seems the writers mixed up 40k and Dune when describing Navigators. Maybe the lore was changed at some point but in my older black library novels every Navigator is described as a pale, frail human with a third eye. That's the only mutation any of them have in any of the material I've read, whereas in this game if they mutate like a particularly ambitious Chaos champion. These things together just ruin the narrative for me. When it comes to gameplay, well, it's Owlcat. Rather than easing you into a progression system you get a whole bunch of unexplained options at once and have to spend a good hour reading tool tips to get an idea of what you're doing. Personally I'm kind of done with that.
