The game itself is really enjoyable. It has interesting gameply, accompanied by lots of character advancement options, roleplaying choices and interesting companions.
Sometimes the balancing is a bit off: Building Argenta on heavy bolter and pairing her with Cassia is totally overpowered. With this combo, some bossfights do not last more than two rounds on daring difficulty.
On the downside are lots of bugs. I did not encounter any gamebreaking bugs so far (start of Chapter 5), but the other ones are ticking me off: No quest advancement, rumors that do not complete, sometimes items that do not do what their text says, etc.
Some quest stopping bugs can be worked around by installing Toybox (I got it on Nexus Mods) and advancing the quest manually.
I just completed the game and it was awesome, really does a good job of creating the experience id expect from 40k of what a rogue trader is and all the other BS that comes in that world. I felt like my decisions mattered and I cared about the characters. You can really overpower your characters by the end. This isn't really a knock but the endgame was easier than expected.
There were some weird bugs, some relationship arcs kind of fizzled, the rumors werent always completable, and sometimes things just would disappear especially in the later acts.
Favorite game of the year so far for sure, would raelly call it a 4.5 but i'll leave the 5
or at least that's how I feel when I compare Rogue Trader to Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous.
Owlcat has abandoned the traditional "real-time with pause" combat style for a turn-based combat with a grid system, which I get to appreciate more and more as I get older. Action economy is in my opinion even better than in Baldur's Gate 3, because you have a simple pool of action points you can draw from, and therefore aren't restricted based on whether the ability costs a full action or a bonus one (or both). You are motivated to unleash the character's full potential each turn!
Space combat is a bit different, you *have* to combine utilizing your skills and move in the same round. It's different, but I definitely prefer it over the fake HOMAM3 combat from Wrath of the Righteous. Colony management is quite simple, easily accessible and can be rather impactful in the long run.
Voidfarer DLC is well integrated into the main game, and if I hadn't known that a certain class was added in it, I wouldn't even be able to tell what content comes from the DLC. Just how I like it.
Like Voidfarer, Lex Imperialis is rather well integrated in the game. It is good, but definitely the worse of the two, since Voidfarer set the bar really, really high. New combat encounters and bosses are a great addition, as is both the newly added class and equipment (namely shields!), and story wise explores a part of the Imperial machine you would kind of expect in the Rogue Trader setting: tithe.
Most of the gear, while progressively getting better, has a gimmick to it which makes you think about its potential use in your build. Likewise, many passive bonuses you can choose as you level up aren't a simple "get +X of Y", but rather "if you fullfill this condition, you gain this bonus", so your builds can get quite complex and synergies become very powerful.
Now onto the bad and the ugly: building like 10-12 different characters over 55 or so levels gets tiring. You will be levelling consistently over the course of the game, and the more levels I got, the more I dreaded levelling all of my companions. Owlcat had autolevelling in their previous games! Just add archetypes like in NWN (maybe even allow us to create our own). Not even favorite talents are kept between playthroughs or shared between characters with the same class. Some characters which come later in the game have poor preset builds, with one in particular taking talents he will literally never be able to use.
Other things, like running out of melta charges or resources for colonies is a minor problem, but in the former case I had to fix it with Toybox. Nothing in the game indicates that Melta Charges are to be used for creating entrances only, otherwise you run out of them and won't be able to fully explore locations.
That's it! I like it.
Exelent CRPG with tons of options a great interactivity in world. Innovative trade mechanics. Very polish turnbase combat (but there are kind a strange dificulty spikes that are kind annoying especialy when same battles can take pretty long time). I like a premise that you are pretty much owner of the world around you from a start of a game not some unknown hero from some insignificant village. You pretty much inherite entire region of space. Second interesting thing is that you can play like a religious fanatic and it fit in a seting perfectly (you can even execute some people when they upset you). And I miss much of the game and companion in first gameplay so there are great replayability. Game is kind of buggy still though. Space exploration, space battle and warpway mechanics are pretty interesting as well. Good job Owlcat I waiting for DLCs with lots of expectations.
Played about 20hrs before refund.
The good:
- Atmosphere and writing - based on the first chapter the writing is really W40k style, the atmosphere, the dialogues with companions and NPC-s, the story [and myriad side stories] are all very strong points of the game, the atmosphere alone could carry the game.
The meh:
- Fights - you don't really need tactics, and your map knowledge - and options - are usually limited, so forget to set an ambush or play clever. This is not a deep tactical game, which is fine.
- The graphics looks quite dated, it does not hurt your eye [okay, a little bit] but lacks the warmth and attention to detail like Divinity Original Sin I-II. It's passable, at best.
The bad:
- the menu was designed by some insane cultist or someone with tiktok brain. The character menu is incomprehensible and unusable, especially when you level up multiple levels. It's just plain bad. You select a "skill" to upgrade, then on the next screen you select a talent or something then it overrides your previous selection [that you cannot see now] as you have limited points to spend... It's simply unclear what the hell is going to be buffed exactly.
- naming: logically the "Ballistic SKILL" is under the "Characteristics" and "Logic" - which sounds like a characteristic - is obviously under "Skills"
- BUGS. I'm no fussy, I won't even flinch when playing the Far Cry series or a Bethesda Fallout, but this was the first game in years where I simply could not progress due to the myriad of bugs. Disappearing skull companion, idiotic AI when I send a character to disarm a discovered trap it runs directly into it to access the control panel, bodies that you simply cannot loot but it's shown they do have loot... This amount of game breaking bugs is atrocious and makes it borderline unplayable. After a frustrating 3 days I've asked for a refund.
I really wanted to like this game, the atmosphere is fantastic, oozes 40k, but the bugs are just too many and too annoying.
