To become death in Venetica is a calling, fulfilled by a man of flesh and blood – equipped with special supernatural skills in order to be able to carry out the duties of the office. A new death is selected regularly by “Corpus”, a secret council. This time however Corpus really makes a wrong decision: The “new” death, Victor, turns out to be a crazed necromancer who manages to turn himself into an overpowering undead with seedy tricks and dark rituals and thus attains almost unlimited power in addition to immortality. As it is strictly forbidden for the chosen death to devote himself to necromancy, the committee revokes Victor’s nomination immediately and declares a new death in his stead without delay.
The power-hungry Victor however does not want to relinquish his position again. He continues to practice the dark arts in order to gather numerous dark and dangerous creatures and tainted souls from the underworld around him. He thus succeeds in eliminating the newly designated death and takes over his power for his own purposes. The effects on the world’s balance are calamitous and – should Victor be able to keep himself in power – its dark consequences are irreversible. Only a person who has the same mighty powers as Victor can prevent his prevailing and vent him his deserved punishment.
Scarlett, the daughter of the real death does not know anything about her ancestry and the hidden talents which slumber within her. She is immersed suddenly in this story due to the brutal attack on her home village and the tragic loss of Benedict, the love of her life. It is a story which she now begins to write herself, a story during the course of which she unleashes her capabilities, a story in which she tries to save Benedict from the world of the dead and a story in which she must protect the world of the living from the dark threat posed by Victor and his henchmen.

Really interesting game with lot's of interesting gameplay mechanics, an interesting story and a not perfect but still good good/evil system.
The main limit of this game is the lenght... too long for the actual content, in the first part you really want to go on with the game, but by the end you just really want to finish it as soon as possible.
Also there are weapons that are too good and weapons that are too bad... the sword is really bad compared to shied and lance.
I like the idea of a gameover only after multiple death explained by the story, and also the ability to ignore good people advice and do evil things without any consequences.
Try to if cheap.
I spend some time into the game. It was fine at all, the story was good and I liked the characters.
But after a bug crushed my savegame and I would have to replay sereval hours, I quit without seeing the end of the game. Somewhat sad, but that bug was to serve to be ignored.
The only thing that saves this game is story progression where it does a good job of letting you explore the city of Venice. If you can look past badly aged game design like and annoying portions of the game like.

- Underwhelming spells and weapon skills
- Only 5 hotkeys
- Lack of different armor thoughout the game
- Lack of direction forcing player to look up a guide
- Using a consumable in inventory forces the inventory screen to close
- Perma-stun if you don't roll or block
- The treasure maps never work, digging is a waste of time
Combat is clunky and just ends up with you performing your combo, if they block then you just circle around them and wait until they drop their guard, repeat this for the entire game.
The only thing that will keep you going is wanting to learn how the story will unfold, making the gameplay more of an afterthought.
I got this during a giveaway (thanks!). After I finished the game once I wouldn't play again never, because it crash a lot. The dialogs and some quests are unpolished and confusing, and the combat is quite mediocre.
Anyway I liked the main character and that's the only reason I finished the game. Tip: save each 5 minutes or less.
It could have been a master piece. Unfortunately many small glitches and bugs can spoil a bit the experience, but if you save often you should be ok.
Also, of course it's an old game, so the gameplay can be dated, but the graphic have aged very nicely. Fights and puzzles can also appear a bit repetitive. Still if you like good stories, and RPG with a soul, it's a very good old game that I found very addictive. Beside of the story, the music is awesome. Specially the song in the Arsenal tavern.
For all these reasons Venetica has become one of my favourite games. Thank you GOG and Deck13.
