To become death in Venetica is a calling, fulfilled by a man of flesh and blood – equipped with special supernatural skills in order to be able to carry out the duties of the office. A new death is selected regularly by “Corpus”, a secret council. This time however Corpus really makes a wrong decision: The “new” death, Victor, turns out to be a crazed necromancer who manages to turn himself into an overpowering undead with seedy tricks and dark rituals and thus attains almost unlimited power in addition to immortality. As it is strictly forbidden for the chosen death to devote himself to necromancy, the committee revokes Victor’s nomination immediately and declares a new death in his stead without delay.

The power-hungry Victor however does not want to relinquish his position again. He continues to practice the dark arts in order to gather numerous dark and dangerous creatures and tainted souls from the underworld around him. He thus succeeds in eliminating the newly designated death and takes over his power for his own purposes. The effects on the world’s balance are calamitous and – should Victor be able to keep himself in power – its dark consequences are irreversible. Only a person who has the same mighty powers as Victor can prevent his prevailing and vent him his deserved punishment.

Scarlett, the daughter of the real death does not know anything about her ancestry and the hidden talents which slumber within her. She is immersed suddenly in this story due to the brutal attack on her home village and the tragic loss of Benedict, the love of her life. It is a story which she now begins to write herself, a story during the course of which she unleashes her capabilities, a story in which she tries to save Benedict from the world of the dead and a story in which she must protect the world of the living from the dark threat posed by Victor and his henchmen.

SciFiCat

Jeux: Avis: 8

It surprises and keeps pulling you in.

I cannot think of other game more fitting of the description "A Diamond in the Rough" as this one. It is readily apparent that this is not a Triple A production, yet everything about it feel grounded and solid. A lot of work and effort went into fleshing out the world of Venetica and it shows. Some areas are quite intricate and beautiful to look. This is a game that kept surprising me as there was always something to find and do the more I looked around and explored. While it is not an open world game, it is rewarding if you are willing to go off the beaten path within the areas you can explore. You'll find new item, quest, and activities to keep you busy for hours on end. The combat is somewhat simplistic at first but never found it boring, specially once Scarlett's repertoire of skills, weapons and offensive/defensive spells grew in size and complexity. The story and cinematics are perhaps the elements where the game shows its weaknesses as facial expressions and body language aren't very varied or elaborate. Perhaps the premise can even be considered rather strange. But this is a minor aside as it doesn't interfere with the core game play in any way. Overall it is a game that gives back as much as the player is willing to put into it. One of the most enjoyable Deck 13 games I've played.

Flawed, but very enjoyable.

If you are looking for immersive RPG, then Venetica would be like 3-3,5 stars game. If you want adventure game with some RPG flavor and dont mind technical hickups, then you can add extra star on top. You can think of this game as Gothic-like experience with few extra improvements: you have open-ish world with some space on the surface and beneath it to explore for extra items or quests, quite decently made main story, a smooth fight system which requires you use proper weapons against different enemies, boss battles, physical and mental skills to get or improve, factions to join and work for and few more. Game however has some noticable shortcommings. There are enviromental issues, like messed side quests dialogs that didnt even try to play along the lore or goes straight-to-point, lack of clues in some assigments or a lot of errand tasks (they are time-consuming even with unlocked though mid-game fast travel). From technical side, while protagonist is very well animated, the world around looks either stiff or "underanimated". Sometimes you can get quest that requires skill you can't have at that point, sometimes world just dont load and you run through void (luckily its not critical bug, restarting the game helps). Also, fighting skills like blocking (sic) needs to be equiped to and executed from shortcut bar, what is highly questionable design choise. The RPG aspect is mostly superficial and consequences are rather minor, so dont hesitate to choose the way you want. Some bigger disappointment is that somehow interesting mental skills are barely worth using in doing adventure stuff. The bright point tho is main character, Scarlett. Although she quite too strong in compare to her physique, shes not an overly capable skull-breaking brute. Shes also not excessively confident, dont have quips for every situation, dont play victim or deliver overly pompous lines. Shes wrote in very human, then relatable way, what is quite refreshing. I hope it helped, cheers

its not for me

voice acting was not that bad. graphics are kinda ok but very heavy on bloom, recommend turning off fullscreen effects for this. why the low stars? well the combat was odd, waiting on annimations to finish before being able to react. just felt off to me. some may like it.

It's exactly what it looks like.

A medium-length game with okay graphics and dated combat mechanics, but boy does it have charm. I had to download a 4GB patch for this thing to stop crashing every 40 minutes, but whenever it worked it was actually a fun and immersive experience. I would recommend this game to those who don't mind their games being a little clunky, because when you get past that hurdle, there's an interesting world, a serious story and funny characters hidden beneath it.

Solid idea, terrible work

Venetica is a difficult title. On the one hand, it has that great combination of simplicity of story and pleasing mechanics that make for a great aRPG, just like Kingdoms of Amalur. On the other hand, the implementation of the game is rushed, poorly balanced, poorly tested, and in some situtations downright infuriating. The RPG part of the game is decent. 3 different weapons (and for some reason a 4th that is just a copy) offer some variation in playstyle, and the basic talents available with levelups will enhance these and make them more satisfying. "Spell" talents are mostly useless but offer a more story-focused development. The basic combat is satisfying in many cases, though the lack of testing and refinement also results in multiple scenarios being highly frustrating, and often only solveable by cheesing or abusing flaws in the primitive "AI". The game initially hypes "twilight energy", a power source that seems intrinsic to the story and the character development, but after the initial hype it is never mentioned again, and serves only a single use with no regards to resource management or development. The story is incredibly simple and lacks any and all depth. This is fine by me, as I mostly played it for the mechanics and character development. The voiceovers are cringeworthy, but sometimes made me laugh. So, to sum it up. The ideas are good here, and if the game had received the time and resources needed it would have been a solid and well received title. As it is, I can only recommend it as a time-waste if you are desperate for a new aRPG (like I am).
