Poor Man's Battlezone Better than BZ

I can't decide if I like Uprising 1 or Uprising 2 better. Or do I like the Battlezone series of games? The BZ games are linear. Do a mission. Do the next mission. OH LOOK, scripted events! Uprising 1 gives you some exposition, and throws you right into the fire. Your job? Defeat the enemy? How. I dunno, you're the commander-whatever guy, figure it out! And that's great. I hate hand-holding. Uprising 2 does some hand-holding at times. (sometimes). Uprising 1, you can take things fast or slow, it's up to you. The game requires you capture control points, which are the only spots you can build a base. Bases are comprised of giant citadel towers with a giant turret at the top. The other plots around it, you have to decide: do you build a structure for producing troops? tanks? aircraft? bombers? what? You also build turrets around your base to help protect it. If the enemy launches an assault, and you're far away, you can remotely link to the citadel turret and blast the attackers and command forces. If you have troops, tanks, whatever, units deployed, you can command them to follow you, assault bases. Alot of it is "beaming them in/out" or "calling" for them. Troops are effective against structures, tanks are effective against infantry. Bombers can take out citadels, structures, but are vunerable to defense turrents. It's rock, paper, scissors and the AI is pretty good. There is a lot of "back and forth" fighting across the map. You might focus on one area, and the AI kicks you in the nuts where you're weak farther away on the map. It can get to be pretty challenging and exhilarating at the same time. Win missions to rack up money, upgrades. Special weapon/items picksup can help. It's all up to you how to fight the battles. The game has a software mode and that's pretty much it. So it has that "retro" look, but it's fluid. The controls take time getting use to (mainly, remembering hotkeys). The sound is good, and watching things blow apart feels rewarding.

Works Great, EVEN on Windows 10!

I was worried that I'd buy this game thinking it would never work, let alone on Windows 10. I'd spent more than my fair share of time trying to get my original 1997 CD copy working on Windows 7 and 8 without massive problems. GOG has released a fully functional version of Uprising that will play problem-free (though I'm sure it might crash here and there, as per the original) on Windows 10, but there's a catch: those of you using dual-monitor support will need to download and install Cursor Lock on their machines, then use it to create a modified shortcut to launch the game. Otherwise your cursor will drift off into another screen and cause a garble of a game that you can't fix. This one little issue aside, this is the BEST way to play this definitive classic, and I highly recommend it.

It could better, It could be worse...

Uprising: Join or Die is one of those games that I really try hard to enjoy but I can't. As a FPS (vehicle) - strategy hybrid, the game manages to combine both of those genre quite well: intense action while managing your resources is enjoyable and entertaining. Ironically, there isn't truly a part that wasn't well done (at least, for its time): Combat is good, the difficulty is handed quite well and the game is... consistent in delivering more of the same through out the entirety of the playthrough... and perhaps that is the problem: the game becomes stale a little too fast meanwhile its simplicity, that should be rewarded becomes a detrimental factor in the gameplay. I thought myself a Lover of this kind of game ( after playing dragon commander, which is fairly similar) but I didn't enjoy this one ( although I cannot deny the appeal for other players). Hence, is this game worth it? yes... but it's not a masterpiece, just a good game that has aged a little too bad.

Runs on Win10 with Compatibility options

To make it work on Win10: Find the installation directory (GOG Galaxy has a shortcut to it) and right-click on the launcher (GOG Galaxy uses that) and choose Troubleshoot compatibility. Let the wizard suggest settings (Win8 worked for me) and test it; if it shows an Allow changes dialog, accept. If the game runs OK (you can try the training missions) exit the game, and accept the changes in the wizard, which makes them permanent. Now it should run flawlessly from GOG Galaxy. I closed other programs but left things like background services running. I played the training missions and the first mission of the campaign without problems with maxed graphics, but there were a few, minor issues; not having played it when it first came out, I don't know if that's the game or a compatibility problem. Minor issues: The game mentions you can see control options during the missions to consult keybindings but they never showed for me; Help during a mission only shows the mission's description. You WILL want to see the key bindings during the missions; fortunately GOG includes the manual, so you can print that page and consult it during the game. For some reason the text in scrollviews is slightly cropped at the right, one or two characters. No big deal, I could make sense of it. When placing defense structures around your citadel, they weren't placed at the point I had the mouse on, but somewhat upwards, maybe because by default the game window is way smaller than the monitor screen. You can (and should) make the game window fill the full screen in Settings. None of these issues were deal-breakers and I could enjoy the game. I have Intel HD graphics. Most key bindings are configurable, which is helpful although for now I'm sticking to the defaults. No autosave -save often. Once I got stuck between buildings. For space reasons I can't say much about the game (1st-person action with some strategy) other than to say I loved it, but keep in mind it's an old game.
