Description
Uprising offers more strategy than a military sim, and more action strategy than a shoot'em up. Using your hi-tech assault tank, loaded with powerful weapons, you need to establish tidal bases, mine for power, build factories and direct legions of allied units against the enemy - all in an amazing 3D world. The path to the stars was heralded as a new beginning for peace, expansion and discovery. It did not happen. The oppressive Imperium power now controls the whole of known space, and the masses are restless. Now is the time to rise up and smash this regime.

The Best Hover Tank Strategy Game

While many will say Battlezone is the better game, I fervently disagree. Uprising is an exceptionally deep tactical action game with a dynamic campaign, very fluid battlefields, great AI and unparalleled gameplay. With Uprising, your troops appeared where you wanted when you wanted, so you could order a bombing run and launch tanks within seconds of each other to help overwhelm an enemy base. It's not all about tactics, either. Proper use of resources is key to winning. Another key is proper use of units, as some units have skills only they possess, like infantry being able to destroy buildings, for example. The campaign is dynamic and non-linear, so it never truly plays out the same way, offering enormous replay value. I've never played multiplayer, but now I can't wait to try. In closing, if you like tactical games with some strategy, or action games with some serious gameplay variety, you owe it to yourself to get this game.

Somewhat flawed gem

Uprising is a somewhat flawed gem in a category that has seen precious few games. And they all seemed to come out in the late nineties. Uprising is a strategy FPS where you both drive around in your tank and shoot stuff and call in different units to do the dirty work for you. Other notable games in the genre are Battlezone 1 and 2 and Urban Assault. Battlezone is probably the best of these but Uprising does have a great deal of intensity and is just a great bit of fun. Sadly I haven't been able to get my copy to run in Windows 10. So finding the game here on gog.com optimised for newer systems was basically a dream come true.

Strange little tank action game, not bad

It's been a long time since I played Uprising, so my memory is a little off. But it's a unique experience and a solid game despite some shortcomings. Battlezone is a good reference point. You control a hovertank fighting for map points, acting directly while calling in allied troops to assist you. But Uprising is a lot more action-oriented. I don't think you have any control over troops after they're placed. Troops are more like disposable powerups, appearing on demand at your location when you summon them. It's common to drop several tanks and planes on a tough enemy position, then charge in behind them to clean up. Your success depends heavily on your own weapons and reflexes. You can station troops to defend your territory as well, but you won't be moving them around the map. They die pretty fast anyway, so idle units aren't a concern. Use troops whenever you need them, then move on. The map consists of large basebuilding areas with walls and corridors between them. Every base has a power square at its heart. You and the enemy place large gun towers on the power squares to fund your expansion and hold the territory against attackers. Gun turrets can easily wipe out a careless attacker. But they're also vulnerable by themselves. Rather than move troops conventionally, the enemy AI will spawn troops right in front of your buildings to overwhelm you quickly. Frequently you must hop from your tank view to the gun turret under attack with only a few seconds of warning. Late game bombers can wipe out the strongest defenses in a single pass, so you are always on your toes trying to advance without giving up territory you've won. It gets pretty frantic at times. It can also get repetitive. The mazelike maps, gates, teleporting enemies, and mostly short range combat remind me of Magic Carpet as much as anything else. The strategy lies in balancing your arcade attack forays with frantic juggling of defenses and resource limits, not troop management.

I've been waiting for this for so long

Story time! My dad used to get a bunch of zip discs from a friend way back when (obscure tech right?) and three of the zip discs had games: Take No Prisoners, Settlers II Gold Edition, and Uprising. I used to play with all the cheats on which were hilarious (still remember TUFF ASS SUPER CHUMP!) as you could literally spawn an anvil from the sky and crush enemies and buildings. A few years back I wanted to play it again so I had found a version online. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get it to run. I tried various ddraw hacks that would try and make the menu appear, and different voodoo renderers that ultimate all caused the game to crash as soon as it got to the gameplay. That is, until I open up GoG today and see this game. My heart skipped a beat, and I instantly bought it, because I knew that if anyone could make this game work on modern systems, its GoG. Thank you guys for making this happen, I adore this game and I'm so glad I can get to play it again, and legit this time! As for the gameplay? Its a striking precursor to Battlezone, which I think I played a few years after I played this. It's a hybrid FPS/RTS where you control a badass tank that can call in giant Citadels with turrets on them. I imagine the 6-7 year old kid I was didn't understand how the RTS mechanics worked, but opening it now its pretty simple stuff. Your objective is to wipe out all the enemy bases on each planet by way of using your tank, some epic circle strafing and then caving in and calling in backup units because you realise that your dinky laser can't destroy buildings. Calling in units requires the appropriate building to exist on a base you build a Citadel on, and the power on each site can be harvested with a power plant. The power is needed to call in units, build stuff and if you have a surplus you can use the stuff to upgrade your tank and weapons. Its a really neat mechanic, which has the unfortunate side effect of frugality. I absolutely adore this game.

Buckle up, we have a galaxy to cap

"And then their frankenstein assault-tank/command-unit/teleportation-waypoint" rammed into the side of our base and started wrecking havoc, while performing strafing maneuvering. We didn't see that coming" A very unique specimen of it's era, Uprising is about being a large unit on the battlefield, while also commanding battlefield, which is somewhat reminiscent of Divinity: Dragon commander, only came out on late 90s. You are given a stereotypical "super-mega-advanced prototype mk3 holy hell this thing is awesome" mcguffin of a tank (in lore at least), and have an objective to take over a galaxy ruled by a stereotypical empire, while yourself being in stereotypical resistance federation. Sounds Stock so far. Music is....eh, music is stock symphonic music, nothing to drive you through. However - the gameplay itself is marvelous. Fast paced, relatively easy to control (just map it to WASD+QE for rotation if you ever decide to unlock turret), with a variety of basic tactical maneuvers and a-bit-more-advanced-than-rock/paper/scissors balancing - infantry is good against buildings (thanks to c4 charges), tanks are good against infatry, fighters are good against tanks, but not against advanced tanks with AA unit etc. PLUS - you have upgrades. Between each mission you accmulate roughly 12-16k credits for in-between-mission-budget which are used to up your tank parameters, up your forces, buy new weapons for your wraith tank and up, buy new buildings etc. Overall, as far as somewhat obscure games go - this one is a very good specimen. Just turn off the ingame music, turn on something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3ya9YEgC4Q and have a blast. (i strongly recommend learning controls tho)
