Keybinding failed me
2020 and I still can't bind what I want in a game. Fixed menu keys block some keys from being used for no good reason.

micro-review
Unpopular opinion - this is an ambitious RPG that fell short of what could have easily been. The setting/premise is interesting at its core, but it was implemented in an extreme manner making it a caricature. It does have humor, but it is also harder to be immersive. The worst part is that it resembles a looter-shooter. There is loot everywhere, once again, taking me out of any possible immersion that an RPG game should have. The gun play and stealth are considerably basic. The highest level of difficulty has a lot of “difficulty by annoyance”, and there is a too big of a gap between the highest and second level. https://pixelloot.com

Tepid, warmed-over homage to Fallout
It's hard to know how to rate this game. On the one hand, everything is more or less in place. It's a servicable RPG. It has characters, it has quests, it has a variety of environments, it has various shootin' and RPG systems to interact with. It tries. I wouldn't feel right giving it a 2, in light of this. But the only reason it's not a 2.5 is the system only allows me to give full stars. The graphics are...aggressively ugly. Just a riot of messy textures and garish colors. Rather than inspire awe at alien worlds, it just gives you a headache trying to make sense of the environment visually. There's no sense of mise-en-scene or environmental storytelling, they just gob assets into areas until they're overflowing with junk. Nothing seems to be placed with care, it feels rushed and thrown together. The voice acting is...it would be polite to call it pedestrian. Some standouts, but most is cringe inducing. The writing vacillates between bland and an extremely strained attempt at "zaniness" which might punch some folks' humor ticket but frequently left me rolling my eyes. The goofy corporate angle is fun for five minutes and then is driven into the ground over the running length of the game. The companions, outside of one, feel banal and derivative. The story is ramshackle and never has any sense of momentum or emotional investment. The shooting mechanics are flat, the weapons lack any sense of punch or power, the status effects are hugely annoying and visually hideous, the AI is one dimensional (stand around until one shot is fired, at which point they all throw caution to the wind and beeline the protagonist) , the bestiary is extraordinarily thin with the same 3-5 enemy types repeating on every planet, to be shot at with the same 5-10 weapon types. Shotgun becomes shotgun 2, assault rifle becomes assault rifle 2, etc. There are a selection of mods, but their effect in terms of gameplay is minimal. Obsidian feels like a studio in something of a slow, sad decline.

Gorgeous game, but shallow gameplay
This is one of the hardest reviews to write. So much of The Outer Worlds is polarizing. If you like games like Fallout or Bioshock, this is definitely worth playing, yet it falls far short of those franchises. I played every quest and every dialogue tree I could, along with both DLC, and I finished in 117 hrs. It's a huge world with lots to do. And yet, as I watched the end game montage, I really didn't feel like I had done much of consequence in that time. That is what is frustrating about the Outer Worlds. In terms of graphics, voice acting, and sheer scope, it's an incredible world to visit. The solar system is vast, the worlds are lovingly detailed, and the characters are given excellent voices and some quite funny satirical dialogue throughout. Every weapon, including their upgraded versions, has a unique model and feel, and there are nearly a hundred different clothes and armor sets to deck out your character with and the characters of your shipmates. It's really a cool world and so much hard work went into the designs. And yet. . . As visually distinct as all the weapons are, I rarely ever felt like it mattered much which weapons I chose, or upgrades I installed, or armor I wore (as long as it was beefy). Sure, you can use stealth or fury, melee or ranged weapons, sniper or explosive rounds. But it all ended up feeling the same by the end. The loot felt like the same loot in box after box. The most disappointing aspect is that under the dazzling veneer each location in the solar system felt the same as the others. Unlike a similarly titled game, The Outer Wilds, where each planet in the solar system has its own unique physics and mechanics, here every location looks different but functions basically the same way way: kill critters, fight or talk your way through humans, finish quests. This would have been so much more if it had the creativity of Bioshock or Prey. Is it worth playing? Yes. But it could have been so much more.

Dialogue System in need of improvement
First dialogue you have after being given control over your character is with a Patrol guy who's wounded, you get the chance to give him med-packs for him to heal up. But only if you do it before engaging in dialogue with him. If you, foolish as you are, do not hand the med-packs over immediately, you won't be given the choice again. I expected better.
