Description
The year is 864 and Tiber Septim has begun his crusade to establish an empire in Tamriel, conquering all who stand in his wake. Though the Redguards of Hammerfell put up a valiant fight, they eventually crumbled to internal mutiny and the might of the Septim forces. Now under Imperial control, the Redguards are kept in line by the oppressive rule of Septim’s retainer, Amiel Richton. It is within this setting that Cyrus, a Redguard mercenary that has travelled Tamriel for over a decade, begins his adventure. Investigating the disappearance of his sister, Iszara, Cyrus is brought back to Hammerfell and thrown into the political intrigue that besets Hammerfell and its inhabitants. In his search for his sister, he must also play his part in this war between the Crowns and the Forebears.

Set 400 years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Redguard contrasts with the other games in many ways. As a third-person action-adventure game, it removes its RPG gloves and instead focuses on bringing you on an immersive journey through the eyes of Cyrus. If you’ve wanted to try the Elder Scrolls series, but haven’t quite enjoyed the RPG elements such as character building and customisation, this is definitely the game for you. But, despite taking a different path, this addition still contains many of the elements that the Elder Scrolls series is renowned for: a vast world, lore-laden narrative and compelling characters. So, whether you’re a native or a newcomer to Tamriel, this swashbuckling adventure will keep you captivated to the very end.
  • Thrilling adventure rich with lore, dialogue, backstory and atmosphere
  • Explore the Island of Stros M’kai, from the darkest catacombs to the highest towers
  • Non-linear story progression, allowing you to explore the world at your own pace
  • Put your wits to the test by solving puzzles and uncovering the mystery of Iszara’s disappearance

Tech issues aside, a great game

As a fan of the Elder Scrolls games since my childhood, I was really happy to finally be able to have the chance to play the two 90s spinoffs, Redguard and Battlespire. First of all, thanks to GOG and Bethesda for making this happen. However, I can't help but say that I'm a little disappointed. Not because of the game itself, but because of the technical issues. I can't run this game at a decent framerate to save my life. This is fine when I'm just exploring but combat is exceptionally difficult because of this. I've tried various fixes and they've only helped minimally, sadly. I keep hoping that the Daggerfall Unity team will try to port this to Unity as well but I won't hold my breath. Unlike the main games in the series, Redguard is not an RPG. Instead, it's an action-adventure title that could be compared to the Tomb Raider series. However, it's not just a cheap rip-off. It's an Elder Scrolls game: the emphasis is on exploration, lore, interaction with your environment, etc. The combat is great in concept, but in practice, it's difficult to use. Part of this is due to the performance issues but even if I got it running at 30+ FPS, it'd be difficult to manage. It feels like what happens if you try to PC emulate a game from, say, the N64, without a controller. Story- and lore-wise, this game is intriguing because it takes place centuries prior to The Elder Scrolls I: Arena. It's set between the events of The Elder Scrolls Online and Arena during the rise of the Septim Dynasty. Cyrus is a legendary Redguard hero and you get to see him become that hero in this game. Graphically, this game is amazing. For the time, they were incredible but even now, they're still awesome. They're certainly poor by today's standards but they maintain that classic 3D charm that a lot of us GOGers enjoy. In general, if you're a fan of TES, get this game but be warned that it may run like absolute trash. It's a very enjoyable game outside of the performance issues.

I can finally play it!

Just got a new laptop, and am finally able to play this game. I could not run Redguard on a laptop that could happily run Skyrim at medium/high settings. Basically, you need a pretty powerful machine to run this game at a playable state. This is because it is emulated- not only through DosBox, but also with a 3Dfx wrapper. Maybe I don't know what I am talking about, but that sounds like twice the emulation (both operating system and "hardware"). There most likely won't be a release that includes 'software mode'. Having tried to run this game many times in the last decade or so, and having had to do plenty of research each attempt: I remember that if you can get it to run without 3Dfx wrapper (which would run faster), there is a certain part of the game you cannot get past. In other words: You cannot complete the game in software mode. This is why there is no option to run software-mode. I set up a gamepad (controller), and it works well in that regard (*Redguard*) Hope this helps!

Bad Controls Limit Fun

After playing with DOSBox settings I was able to get this game running rather smoothly. That said, even when the game runs smoothly it can still be a clunky mess because of the awkward way your character turns, runs and jumps. So much of the games dungeons is platforming and you will die because the camera moved at a weird angle and couldn't see the floor, because you can't control the distance of Cyrus' jumps and because you just straight up fell through the floor after climbing to the top of a platform. Problems with the controls can be limited by rebinding the keys to modern WASD movement, E for action, Q for free-look/blocking. I did like the story and I appreciated that game did not hold your hand with glowing arrows telling you where to go. The puzzle at time could be hard but mostly fair if you took your time and in some cases, took notes. There are some puzzles where poor collision detection made it hard to operate and I had to reload several times because I got stuck in a jumping or landing animation. Reloading because of being stuck in an animation, stuck in a wall/floor/enemy/conversation was common in my playthrough. Combat suffers from the same complaints along with finicky movements, bad camera angles and cheesy animations when fighting larger enemies. I want to recommend this game because it has an interesting story, a bit of mystery and it explores a time in Tamriel when Tiber Septim was still growing his empire. But it is a bad game. Some people make excuses for this game because of it's age but it 1998 saw the releases of "Thief" and "Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time." In the end this game feels like a "Tomb Raider" rip-off with worse controls and worse platforming.

Virtually unplayable

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a huge fan of the GOG platform. I'm a console player by trade, and would have otherwise missed out on some classics and must-plays. I have almost 200 games in my library, and have never had to so much as tweak any of them to get them to run smoothly on my Windows 7 machine. That is, before Redguard. From the default download, the game ran at 8-12 frames per second, the cutscenes stuttered and froze, and the controls were delayed by a solid 2 or 3 seconds. I spent a night fiddling with various fixes on the forums, but to not much avail. It was better for sure, maybe 20 FPS, but at best it's still just too choppy to be fun to play, and any real action on the screen reverts the game to molasses. I was really looking forward to playing this game and would have loved to give the game itself a positive review, but the emulation quality of this release means that I won't be able to. :(
