Description
The year is 864 and Tiber Septim has begun his crusade to establish an empire in Tamriel, conquering all who stand in his wake. Though the Redguards of Hammerfell put up a valiant fight, they eventually crumbled to internal mutiny and the might of the Septim forces. Now under Imperial control, the Redguards are kept in line by the oppressive rule of Septim’s retainer, Amiel Richton. It is within this setting that Cyrus, a Redguard mercenary that has travelled Tamriel for over a decade, begins his adventure. Investigating the disappearance of his sister, Iszara, Cyrus is brought back to Hammerfell and thrown into the political intrigue that besets Hammerfell and its inhabitants. In his search for his sister, he must also play his part in this war between the Crowns and the Forebears.

Set 400 years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Redguard contrasts with the other games in many ways. As a third-person action-adventure game, it removes its RPG gloves and instead focuses on bringing you on an immersive journey through the eyes of Cyrus. If you’ve wanted to try the Elder Scrolls series, but haven’t quite enjoyed the RPG elements such as character building and customisation, this is definitely the game for you. But, despite taking a different path, this addition still contains many of the elements that the Elder Scrolls series is renowned for: a vast world, lore-laden narrative and compelling characters. So, whether you’re a native or a newcomer to Tamriel, this swashbuckling adventure will keep you captivated to the very end.
  • Thrilling adventure rich with lore, dialogue, backstory and atmosphere
  • Explore the Island of Stros M’kai, from the darkest catacombs to the highest towers
  • Non-linear story progression, allowing you to explore the world at your own pace
  • Put your wits to the test by solving puzzles and uncovering the mystery of Iszara’s disappearance

Great game, terrible gameplay experience

Redguard is an action-adventure spinoff of the Elder Scrolls series. It introduced a TON of new things that would change the way Elder Scrolls games presented themselves forever. Dwemer, unique architecture and world design, dragons, Empire vs. provinces, I could go on and on. The best things to do at Redguard are: talk to characters, look at the environments, solve puzzles, soak in the incredible atmosphere, jam to the tunes. The worst thing to do in Redguard is actually playing it. The controls are garbage, the framerate is garbage, it's just not enjoyable to play. I'm a huge Elder Scrolls fan, the "just can't get enough" type, so I put up with the horrendous controls because I liked the places that these horrendous controls took me to. I suffered through navigating the admittedly awesome dungeons because I could at least derive some pleasure from looking at them and solving the actually well-designed puzzles (despite pulling my hair out after falling through a pixel-wide crack for the n-th time). I completed them so I could get that next story step, that next piece of lore or information, that new interaction with the colorful NPCs of Stros M'kai. Ultimately, like Battlespire before it, Redguard is technically not up to snuff to be considered worth recommending as a whole. While Redguard, like Battlespire, is clunky and frustrating, I would, again, be lying if I said I derived no fun or enjoyment from it. Everything about this game except its execution on the performance and controls front is really, really good. But this is still a game, not a book, movie or series, so if the main reason for not enjoying a game is in how you interact with it, well, I don't consider it a game worth recommending to anyone but the most dogged Elder Scrolls fans. Play it for the lore, the story, the characters, the cool dungeons. But be prepared for a lot of navigational suffering.

DustynB - there isn't a Unity version

While another team is working on a Redguard Unity version, they are far away from even reaching alpha status. So if you are a user that read DustynB's comment and are confused why you can't get Redguard working in Daggerfall Unity, its because that is currently impossible. Now this game is very misunderstood. If you didn't live through the era of early 3D games, the controls are going to feel wonky to you. If, like me, you grew up on these games, the controls come back to you fast, just like riding a bike. The voice acting is very charming, but is incredibly hit or miss in terms of acting. Some of it is downright terribly over-acted, however this was common in those days. Bethesda may be a juggernaut now with thousands of employees and billion dollar budgets, but back then they were tiny, and the fact that this game was fully voice acted is a feat by itself, so appreciate that. The story and lore are the reasons to play it. You play during the reign of Tiber Septim himself, when he's uniting Tamriel! For younger gamers, this gem is absolutely worth playing. If you find the controls challenging, take a lesson from Dark Souls gamers and git gud.

Great game, good 'port'

The game itself is great, however it is notoriously hard to make run on modern machines. I've tried running it myself, and it simply ran much slower than the current GOG version. While I can't play this on my mid-range laptop, on my moderately powerful desktop it is playable and enjoyable. Given the difficulty of the task, I believe GOG did a good job, thus my rating. I do hope improvements will continue until performance improves.

An underrated Elder Scrolls title

Redguard is a very well-made game for its time, and its story is still one of the best in the entire Elder Scrolls series. You get to explore Dwarven ruins, talk to both a Sload necromancer and Clavicus Vile, and not least of all fight a dragon. Beyond the main plot involving Cyrus' sister, there is a wealth of foundational lore, including the rise of the Third Empire and the Redguard civil war. This is the game that gave us Pocket Guide to the Empire, 1st Edition. I recommend looking at the comic book The Origin of Cyrus! before playing the game to more fully understand the protagonist's backstory. You can find it on UESPWiki or the official Elder Scrolls website page for Redguard. You might also want to read the pocket guide mentioned above. Some of the reviews here talk about how the game is unplayable, but this is not the case for me. The performance isn't great, but that's true of most DOSBox games.

Great Game, for what I have played.

I bought this one back in the day, while waiting for Morrowind to be released, but it never ran on my old PC, by the time I upgraded, I already Morrowind and it ran on my old system, so Redguard was forgotten, many years later I found the old game again covered in dust, I got it out, to find that unlike other titles this one hates anything that is not its core intended PC set up. it was a mess, I even tried repeatedly to set up a Virtual machine running Windows 95, then 98, then XP, in all cases, the game did not work in a playable manner, then I found this, a friend had bought it, and it ran on his Windows 7 system, but it was not running all that well, The game suffers because of the Video Adapter it wants, as no one can seem to emulate the 3DFX well enough to run this title (and I assume others) I would only buy this one as part of a bundle, and hope that someone soon fixes the issue stopping this from running well. as for GOG bringing this to us, thank you GOG, we can barely play it though, I am wish listing this one in the hope it gets the fix it needs so we can all enjoy it.
