The worst excesses of roll-to-miss D&D
I've playd about 10 hours of Solasta, across two abbreviated playthroughs, and while my initial reaction was positive, I grew bored of the grindy combat rather quickly. The combat is slow-paced and too often results in dull, roll-to-miss, back and forth grindfests. Click to attack, miss, get attacked, opponent misses; the train rolls on. Couple this with few opportunities to meaningfully roleplay the characters I've created, or engage in much dialogue with NPCs, and the game boils down to a bland XCOM clone with generic D&D trappings. There's not much in the way of exploration, either. Of the three pillars of classic tabletop roleplaying — exploration, combat, and roleplaying — Solasta is way too focused on combat. Some positives: creating your whole party can be fun, and the way the custom characters attempt to interact with one another can be amusing. There's a big array of spells and some are even useful. I say all this with a heavy heart and as a big fan of tabletop roleplaying. Solasta isn't worth $50 right now. I hope they meaningfully improve the game in the future and realize that D&D isn't about rolling a d20 and hoping you deal damage. It should be way more immersive than this. Right now the boring grind of this game does a disservice to those interested in tabletop RPGs.
