Requiem: Avenging Angel is a 3D, first-person action game of biblical proportions set in a world under siege. A holy war rages on Earth between Heaven's Chosen Soldiers and Hell's Fallen Angels. You are Malachi, a Chosen Angel, sent to Earth to save Creation from the wrath of the Fallen. Blast your way through an immersive futuristic 3D world developing Angelic powers like possession, blood boil, locust swarms, and the ability to turn your enemies to pillars of salt. Without you, mankind doesn't have a prayer.
All the heart-pounding action of a top shooter, with a rich story line and realistic character interaction
Fight demons and hell's minions using rare angelic powers, including: Bloodboil, Lightning, Flight, Holy Light, and Turn to Salt
Take up arms against the dark horde of the Fallen and utilize 7 unique weapons of the plane of Creation, including: the “Trinity” Combat Shotgun, “Beelzebomb” Grenade Launcher and “Revelations” Railgun
Requiem Avenging Angel is one of the few non-religious games that takes inspiration from Christianity for its story, which may sound bad at first until you realize how they've used it. Requiem is a fun ride all the way, featuring an interesting (but underdeveloped) story about fighting a corrupt army, and kicking demon ass using all sorts of crazy angelic powers like turning people to salt.
Unfortunately, the game can be insanely hard and unfair at points, and the number of hitscanning enemies is staggering, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives here. The combat stays fun no matter how much you play or get irritated thanks to the varied weapons and enemies, cool powers, and enjoyable levels.

Unfortunately, this release is so borked that it exceeded my threshold for technical BS, and I can't be bothered to keep bashing my head against the wall with it. The only positive thing I can say is that it launches and, technically, it’s playable because you can load into the game and start a level. Unfortunately, that’s where its functionality ends:
1. Widescreen fixes don’t work at all. You’re stuck playing in a 4:3 aspect ratio unless you enjoy playing your games stretched horizontally.
2. If you have a dual monitor setup, you're screwed, unless you disconnect the second monitor. You’ll constantly drag your cursor to the other screen and minimize the game whenever you try to click to fire. There is no way to run this game in exclusive fullscreen as far as I'm aware.
3. The audio is so deep fried you'll start craving some Kentucky friend chicken. I’m not sure if this was intentional or if it's the fact that it's an old DirectX 6 game that doesn’t play nice with modern hardware. The DirectSound hardware patch didn’t seem to help either.
4. Mouse input is somehow both jittery and unresponsive at the same time. It all depends on the direction you're trying to aim. The direct input fix didn’t resolve the issue for me either.
So overall, I couldn’t get this game into a playable state, which is a shame because I’ve always wanted to try it. Buyer beware.
For reference, all the fixes I attempted came from the PCGamingWiki.
I wanted it badly as a kid in 90s and managed to play it only recently. The game was released at the time of Half-Life which made it virtually forgotten over night. At least now I can rate it without any nostalgia and I am honestly shocked how good it is. Above all it has amazing settings, atmosphere and sound design. The game is quite somber, they really managed to create a feeling of a very dark dystopian world. Apart from weapons you also have spells that are quite enjoyable to use even though you will likely use only the most effective one (energy ball) and the rest will be there just to spice the things up.
It has also some negatives. To set the game up might be a problem. Use dgVoodoo2 if you experience any troubleshooting and I would also recommend to switch to 800x600 in which the game was designed to run and it runs like that by far the smoothest. The controls are clunky. I personally didnt mind it and found it quite charming. It is not terrible, it is just a bit different to what you are used to and it adds another layer of personality to the game. The real pain are boss fights however. They take ages to finish because every boss has incredible amount of HP. Another issue is there is at least one gamebreaking bug and you will possibly need to use a cheat code to progress to another level. Also note this is not a Doom like "run and gun" shooter but a more tactical approach is needed.
Requiem: Avenging Angel is a first-person shooter where you play as Malachi, an angel on a mission to free Earth from demons. Gameplay is very similar to Half-Life, being a fast-paced FPS taking place in a mostly industrial area. But the unique thing is, you have angelic powers. At first you'll have no powers, but as you progress they are slowly unlocked. Beware the missable Warp Time power though, you must do a little sidequest in the catacombs to unlock it. Aside from that, all powers are available upon reaching parts of the story.
The powers are the highlight of the game, kinda makes it like BioShock in a way. The first unlocked powers are weak and seem kinda useless, but later on the strong ones start unlocking. Some powers include fireballs, lightning, super speed, etc and some more unique like disintegrating your enemies by turning them to salt, and reviving dead enemies to fight for you. Some levels also take place in cool, heaven and hell inspired locations. Wish we had more of these though, most levels took place in man-made areas.
Being an old game, it does come with its flaws. Like when opening the power menu, we must click on the power we want, in real-time. In modern games usually they use a weapon wheel which slows down time. It's understandable though given its age, but other than that combat is kinda too fast-paced for me. The final boss fight is also unusually hard, with no heals in between, I had to resort to cheats.
To be honest, I've never heard of Requiem: Avenging Angel until the day GOG decided to give it for free. And I'm real glad, as I probably won't be finding out about this game anytime soon. If you enjoy FPS games such as Half-Life and BioShock, this is an obscure title that might be worth your time.
You will start in Hell and you defeat Lucifer in the end.
One of the best, stylish futuristic shotgun I am shooting with.
Good story, simple but still keep pushing on.
Playing 20 years ago. Good game.
