Most of the issues have been fixed

Railway Empire seems to get a bad wrap, and I'm not sure why.I really enjoy sim/tycoon games, so when I saw the variety of railroad tycoon games available (Railroad Tycoon 3, Railway Empire, Railroad Corporation, etc.), I spent quite a bit of time researching to try to make sure I picked the one I would enjoy most. I'm a casual gamer, so I like a mild but not frustrating challenge. I read a lot of negative reviews about Railway Empire, but most of them were pretty dated, and it looked closest to the type of game I would enjoy--so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did. Most of the issues players reported in their negative reviews have since been fixed (broken/cheating AI, bugged tutorial, inability to turn off opponent audio, no full america map, no X crossings, no nighttime, etc.). So far, this game has been a lot of fun. It's beautiful and laying tracks (a major part of the game) is very intuitive. I also appreciate the ride-along view. This game does a good job of handling the micromanagement tasks for you by default (e.g., choosing the type and quantity of cargo) while still giving you the option of handling those details if you want. It's true that the opponents can be annoying and the staff management tedious, but most modes give you the flexibility of setting up the game with only the things you want. I've seen a lot of complaints about the signals in the game, but after watching some online tutorials, I find them to be manageable. A couple of things to note about this game: - The Complete Collection came out before the Japan DLC, and therefore doesn't include the Japan DLC. - The GOG version doesn't include the Scenario Editor (as that feature is integrated with Steam Workshop), so if that's important to you, get the game on Steam instead. Personally, I thought the editor looked pretty limited and found the DRM-free GOG option more appealing.

Pretty fun, once you figure it out

Played the Standard Edition recently, so now I'm planing on buying the Deluxe edition as soon as it goes on sale. The game can be rather good, once you figure it out. There's a horrible and convoluted rail signal system that's kinda badly explained, but you can thankfully turn that "feature" off after the first mission of the campaign and play the other missions without it. The main campaign is only five missions and you can finish it pretty fast. Thankfully, there are a bunch of single scenarios, as well as a sandbox and a custom game mode with a random map generator. so it never gets too old. Finally, the DLCs also feature new maps and scenarios, so the Deluxe Edition is a must. The music, sound and the graphics are great. The UI and portraits are cartoony, feeling almost like a board game. The crew and competitor avatars are adorable and the few short cinematics are quite fun to watch. So give it a try, it's a decent game. Finally some tips: Turn of the signaling system before starting a mission, to avoid headaches. Remember to sell bonds early in the game to get a huge cash income, And don't be afraid to clone your successful trains. Also, use manual pause, it helps a lot.

This is Not Railroad Tycoon!

Railway Empire is NOT RRT! I had just about finished the base game scenarios when I decided that I was still interested enough in the game to get the expansion. One thing that RE has going for it is that there are a huge amount of moving parts in the game. Some games are about making money. Other games are about producing a lot of a particular resource. Although you employ some similar tactics your change in focus keeps the game new and interesting. It seems that the Medium Difficulty Expansion Scenarios are not as hard as the Medium Difficulty Base Game Scenarios. If you buy this Complete edition I would go in this order: Campaign, Expansion Medium, maybe then Expansion Hard. The Expansion Scenarios are structured more like the Campaign than the Scenarios in the Base in that you don’t have all your tasks in front of you all at once. Some suggestions for the Devs about what annoys me while playing: 1. Confirm Track Deletions! 2. Don’t Discard Line Changes. Too often I forget to OK the rail line that I have just set up by prematurely selecting Building or Track Building and find out “changes to rail line discarded”. 3. Buy Out doesn’t make that much sense. Maybe at 51% you should be able to put 51% of the profits of the other company into your company. 4. Terminal Stations should be a little cheaper. 5. Stop the Trains getting Confused when their routine really hasn’t changed. Suddenly that train is running home to mommy to start the trip all over again. 6. When laying Signals there should be some “train length indicator”. SPOILER: 7. The Signal Controlled versions of the buildings are vastly better than the regular versions. Because of this it makes sense at the beginning of the game to rip up any existing stations and put in good stations. Allow the others to be more useful or just get rid of them.

250h played so far, still not finished

Similar games I liked: Civilization series, city builders, tycoons. Good sides: + Long gameplay + Challenging + Addictive + No bugs after years of patches + Great DLCs in the package Bad sides: - The last DLC must be purchased separately - You must make sure the pause mode is on manual, otherwise it's unplayable I highly recommend this game.

Surprisingly fun railroad strategy game

If you've ever wondered what it's like breezing on a steam locomotive through a vast praerie filled with untamed forests, wild buffalos and Indians, then this game is for you. Railway Empire is an excellent strategy that truly makes you feel like you're turning the wheels of progress from the dawn of railroads in the early 1800s all the way up to diesel locomotives of the 1920s. For me, it was extremely satisfying to watch time and again how the empty unhospitable land turns to industrial paradise interwoven with railroads like veins, all centered around the cities which can grow really big, if you want them to. Not only is RE a fun and educational railway simulator, but a money-making simulator as well! See, your capitalist, progress-enticing, environment-endangering efforts don't stop with puffing smoke across the entire american continent. You can also build factories, buy rural farms and businesses, invest on the stock market, do research, hire staff and freelancers, issue bonds and compete with other railroad owners, ultimately buying them off and merging their assets with yours, or wiping them altogether. All these features tie together surprisingly well. Want to test them out in a chilled free mode? Go ahead. Or, if you feel ready, you can test your management skills in the scenarios, which definitely added more than one wrinkle to my forehead. Now take all of this and add all the DLCs and you've got a truly enticing strategy game worth hundreds of hours . Just make sure you have the patience to research some of the mechanics online when starting. The tutorial feels somewhat shallow given the complexity and wide possibilities of the game.
