Good sequel.

If you loved Sands of Time, this game is a no brainer, but if you're new to the series, play Sands of Time first. I always thought that Sands of Time never needed a sequel, but Ubisoft, somehow managed to make a sequel out of it and twist it 90 degrees. Gameplay wise, it's still as awesome as ever and it has an even better and bloodier combat system than it's predecessor, but story wise... from time to time you'll want to throw the damned prince over a cliff on purpose, I didn't liked his brooding change over his charming happy go lucky self from Sands of Time. So, it all boils down to this, if you loved Sands of Time and you're curious to see how the story unfolds, up to it's stellar ending of The Two Thrones, then by all means, buy this and enjoy it, but if you've felt that Sands of Time didn't needed a sequel, then skip it, or wait until the much, much better The Two Thrones. Protip: The game has 2 endings, seek every nook and cranny to get the better ending.

Still the best of the SoT trilogy

Other reviews already mentioned that the gameplay is amazing. But for me also the setting is way better than the fairy tale setting of the predecessor. This game is really dark and I like it. The soundtrack is also amazing. Heavy metal mixed with oriental vibes. It's like 300 as a game. A real classic that aged well. 15 years later it plays as fluently as it did back then. Buy it. Now.

This game is a insult to Sands of Time

I used GOG for a couple years now, and this is the first time I'm leaving a review. This game caused enough of an emotional response out of me to write my first review. The presentation is fine. The game severely changed the atmosphere from the Disney world of bright colours, to a dark moody, and edgy heavy metal world. The camera just like in Sands of Time is barely controllable, but where Sands of Time made up for that matter by giving multiple retries and frequent checkpoints, Warrior Within has none of that. Each save point can be 10 to 20 minutes apart, meaning a lot of times death means replayingto the same sections over and over again. And the actual sands are so rare it feels like you’re always playing on hardcore mode, preserving your health, and hoping that the Prince doesn't throw himself off causing you to lose the last of your sands. On a gameplay level, the game didn't make a single stride forward. The traps, platforming and even enemies are almost the same, the only major difference being added to the game being the dual wielding mechanic, which becomes redundant a hour into the game when you unlock the upgraded one handed sword. The story, just like the first game, is weak. It’s not supposed to be a masterpiece, but the first game at least held interesting notions and stakes, while this game kills any tension of interest when the Prince makes his 5000th angry grunt at some shadow demon. I feel like all my criticisms and gripes with the game come from the fact that it didn't do enough. I have no nostalgia for any of the PoP games, but where the first game was legitimately good, I find the second one a bore. It took the exactly the same gameplay of the first game, and tried to mix it with its new world of hardcore gore and death, but the gameplay cracked under this, it wasn’t made for this type of game. Where Warrior Within could have reinvented itself, it choose to stay the same game while playing heavy metal

Some improvements

If you aren't put off by the edgelord tone there is a lot to love here. The freeform fighting definitely opens up combat from the chess based version that we had some version of in every earlier entry of the franchise. This uses its time travel conceit rather well. I will say that this is the first of these where you have to seriously pay attention to what direction you're going. It's not open world but you can easily end up spending a while going in the exact wrong way it's not going to completely strain your thinking past the breaking point just note that you can't really play it on complete autopilot. The themes of Free Will versus determinism are surprisingly well-handled for something clearly geared towards teenagers. Like the ones that came before it in this series, this has at least puzzle that will seriously challenge you and other than that it tends towards one's that are not that difficult. In some ways fighting is easier especially if you choose to simply spam the most powerful moves and let's be honest a lot of us make that choice. I appreciate that some enemies require very special tactics. You go up against these large dog creatures that explode in a fireball the moment they are defeated or shortly after. Which of course means you want to make sure you aren't completely surrounded by enemies when you take one out. Or you'll want to throw your secondary weapon at it to take it out. And it's easy to tell when it's about to die. Yeah you can now pick up a sword, club or the like for your left hand and it can be thrown at any point. Carrying it opens up new fighting moves. This also has a good variety. For certain situations you can grab onto an enemy and do a handful of distinctly different things. There is one boss that makes more than one appearance and if you find yourself not wanting to engage with it every time note that there's no penalty to simply running past it at least some of the times that it shows up.
