This game is amazing! While the main campaign is a bit short, there is so much more to do on the world. Places to explore and decent quests to attend. All mechanics were improved and graphics are awesome! Turn based combat is so much win that I can't tell. It's not better on everything compared to the first, but it's a nice step up and a decent sequel. Must play for any cRPG fan. Obisidian you are awesome!
For a very long time Obsidian was considered to have the best writers in the industry, and for all the bugs and design issues their games may have had, the writing was always good enough to justify the purchase.
This, unfortunately, is Obsidian's worst written game by a considerable margin.
Infact this was their first genuinely poorly written game as a studio and it is obvious that they have lost some irreplacable employees.
The graphics are fantastic and the game is very polished, but that is about all they got right.
Combat is a mess and it is over so fast that tactics are almost never a consideration.
Most engagements are over in the time it takes you to cast two spells, so while the game lets you build a fairly complex character it is largely pointless to do so.
All in all, POE 2 just plain boring.
The setting and story are not interesting, the characters are horribly written and combat is not challenging in the slightest.
Everything is just a chore, even naval combat is essentially just a glorified excel sheet.
Gave me the best vibes since Bauldurs Gate. A few glitches here and there, and the story being tied at the end was somewhat unsatisfying (although i have not played through the last two expansions yet) but the characters, the combat, the excellent storytelling and interesting lore, all kept me wanting even more. I hope obsidia continues making games like this forever.
The optimization in this game was terrible for me. My specs are better than the recommended requirements and I was still having constant framerate drops, long loading times and the occasional freeze on medium settings.
Aside from that the game is a boring slog. The main quest is completely uninteresting and the encounters seemed worse than the first game, The companions I found were boring except for Xoti, even the returning ones seemed to have had all the life sucked out of them from Pillars 1.
The factions seemed to be intentionally written to all be horrible so you can't root for any of them in an attempt to create an ambiguous conflict but it only induced apathy in me. I wanted to avoid all of them and I lost all interest in playing the game while interacting with them in Neketaka.
There is really an SJW problem with this game and the mediocre writing and downright terrible character development makes it even worse. It's clear the narrative department wanted to be progressive, which is okay and actually fits the world the game takes place in, but the problem is that the quality is so below average that it comes off as pandering.
This is why most, if not every single one, of the leaders you meet are strong, independent women. If they're men, be sure you can overthrow and replace them with a strong, independent woman. It's a video game trope that has repeated itself so many times now, that it's become a parody. Character development is even worse, since most of your companions are bisexual and immediately notify you of this, instead of slowly developing a relationship over time. Like most things in PoE2, there's no nuance.
Most of the time it feels like you're playing a fan fiction version of a cRPG, which is probably why so many people seem to think it has an SJW problem. supbar writing and especially the lackluster character/companion narratives.
