Description
Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! There is a beauty in simplicity

Legend of Grimrock is quite a minimalistic game. Both in the size of the team who made the game and in the numbers of activities you can do in it. Actually, I think that you can count them on the fingers of both of your hands. And yet it is addictive and fun to play. How is that possible? After you have created your party/chose the default one consisting of four prisoners, you begin exploring the first level. After a while, you kill your first enemy and gather your first equipment. Your party begin to be hungry. The torch goes off. You need to find some food and a new torch. In addition to that, you will have to solve puzzles. On occasion, you may find a hidden button which will reveal hidden room containing more loot . Mages can learn new spells from scrolls they find. Torches might be replaced by other sources of light. The game is not too hard, nor too easy. If you make a mistake, you will get punished, but rarely by immediate death. The story is clear from the start. There are notes here and there, left by a prisoner who was here before you, about Mount Grimrock, the dungeon you are trying to escape from. The game looks good, but you won’t see many things. The environment changes as you descend deeper into the dungeon, but we are talking about three environment types. There aren’t many types of enemies either. Although Legend of Grimrock is mostly pretty flawless game, there are some minor issues. In lager areas, you can use the movement between tiles in your advantage in combats by using the hit & run tactic, although I have a feeling that it was designed this way on purpose. There are no shortcuts for spells, unfortunately. You have to click on every symbol every time you cast a spell. Some spells consists of three symbols, so casting spells can get a bit slow sometimes. The biggest issue are some puzzles which can be maddening. Luckily, there are guides on the internet on how to solve them.

Pour les nostalgiques de Lands of Lore

Legend of Grimrock est avant tout un pari réussi, celui de faire revivre un genre tombé en désuétude : le donjon crawler. Digne hériter de "dungeon master", Grimrock a réussi à faire vibrer ma fibre nostalgique. C'est avec appréhension qu'on pénètre dans ce gigantesque donjon empli de monstres, de pièges et d'énigmes. Mais il y a quand même des hics. Le principal, c'est que la nostalgie c'est bien beau, mais il faut savoir se renouveler. Et là, après avoir joué à peine 9h et être au 16ème niveau, la lassitude me gagne. Dieu que c'est répétitif ! Certes les énigmes ne sont pas les mêmes, mais ça consiste toujours à tirer des leviers, pousser des dalles, et jouer avec des téléporteurs. C'est marrant au début, mais ça devient vite chiant. Et cette sensation d'ennui est poussée à son paroxysme à cause de l'absence totale de scénario. Aucun PNJ (à part un type qui laisse des bouts de papiers), aucun dialogue, rien, le néant. C'est bien simple, Legend of Grimrock a été surpassé en 1993 par Westwood et son fabuleux "Lands of Lore", la perle des Donjon Crawlers à mon humble avis. C'est de lui dont aurait du s'inspirer les petits gars de Grimrock plutôt que de "Donjon Master". Le mécanisme même du Donjon Crawler a parfois de quoi faire rire, ou soupirer. Une dalle doit être pesée par une personne pour ouvrir une porte menant à une salle contenant une clé. Nous sommes 4 dans le groupe, comment faire ?! Je sais, pardi ! Allons chercher un monstre. Car jamais il ne nous viendrait à l'esprit de laisser l'un de nous 4 sur cette dalle... Tout comme jamais il ne viendrait à l'esprit d'encercler un monstre seul. Non, ça, seuls les monstres savent le faire ! Mais pour un premier essai, je tire un coup de chapeau. Bravo pour l'effort accompli et ce résultat plus que réussi ! J'espère juste que Grimrock 2 comblera les manques de son grand frère. Je veux des PNJ, je veux des dialogues, je veux une aventure !

Ever wonder what your dad went through..

..with RPGs when he was a kid? Grimrock is a really good modern example. You could call it "Baby's First Dungeon Crawler". You'll learn how to appreciate the automap and the fact that you can make your own notes. Keep in mind that some of us had to use graph paper in the old days!* Combat is confusing for the beginner if you don't know the following: 1) Place a weapon in your character's hand and right-click on it to use it. 2) You have 4 characters; 2 in the front, 2 in the back. The two in the back can't attack unless they either have the skills or appropriate weapons (like a spear). I haven't finished the game yet but I've only run into one puzzle that threw me so far. Give it a try. *In fact, you can play the "old-school" way and turn the automap off. That's a nice touch.

Old School

What LOG is: an old fashioned dungeon crawler, the kind thats been common in the 90s. You get thrown in a dungeon and need to escape. Movement is grid-based. Combat is mostly about moving to a strategically advantageous tile in time. The focus of the game is about exploring the dungeon and solving its challenges and puzzles (and getting hopelessly lost in it if you play it in old-school mode and don't care about manual mapping). What LOG is not: a modern AAA-grade RPG. There are no dialogues. There are no epic quests to solve. There is no real story being told. There is no epic combat movement and no world you get to save from your own den in front of the computer. The game makes no secret out of the fact that it's aimed at old-school gamers and retro enthusiasts. It excels at what it does, delivering a gaming experience that was common in the early 90s. If you're not into that, this might not be the game for you, but if you are then you're in luck because you've come across a true gem of its kind.

Just enjoy the game

After reading the patwater review, I couldn't help myself and had to write a review of the game. Reviewers like patwater just fail to be in the moment and enjoy the game. Instead, the reviewer over-analyzes and picks at game aspects that don't warrant that much attention. The game is an old-school dungeon crawler at heart. If you remember playing games like EOB and Dungeon Master and liked them, you will enjoy LoG. LoG incorporates the play mechanics of the old dungeon crawlers and refines that play with modern sensibilities and lessons learned. On top of that, the game looks really good. My only complaint might be that some of the puzzle solutions aren't intuitive, but nothing ever discouraged me from continuing or pursuing a solution. This is my simple rule of thumb for rating a game: 1 star - so bad I couldn't finish 25% of the game 2 star - not too good; maybe I didn't even finish the game for a number of reasons 3 star - okay game, but when I've finished, maybe I regret putting so much time into it. 4 star - a fun experience; no regrets; might even recommend it. 5 star - wow! this game had me spellbound! I rated the game a 4 star. The developers know what they want to produce, they seem focused on their plans, they obviously work hard to provide a quality product and they develop a game for their target market. I respect that and plan on buying LoG 2 when it comes out. If they continue like this, each game iteration will only get better.
