Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.
In Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny you enter a world of intense beauty and mortal danger where your slightest move can trigger cataclysmic events, miraculous escapes, or lethal battles. See magical cities rise out of great oceans. Enter the musty caverns of Dracoid ruins. Discover gruesome altars and witness secret ceremonies never before seen by humans.
Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.
Superb game and story telling. For the sale price it's a ridiculously good deal and a must have. Do yourself a favor and pick this up if you haven't already, it's really just that good.
Okay, I can't honestly be really objective since those two games are some of the first I've ever played.
Lands of Lore 1:
A gem that went mostly uncovered. Nice, if simple, story, the world pulls you in.
It can be unforgiving at times, if you don't pick up something you really need you may be stuck forever but overall it's a great experience (and with the guides you can now find online more than doable).
Lands of Lore 2:
Many people bash on it because of the switch in 3D (that was admittedly not perfect but it was still better than many) and the use of only one character with 2 sub-classes. The story was (to my humble opinion) better than on the first installment and the world much bigger and (even with the lack of decent textures) more detailed. You could find all kinds of interesting things in the most random places and exploration was encouraged.
The marrying of video and game graphics may have been in many cases unsuccessful but the cinematics (be it in specific intervals or through the use of those history stones you could find) were ahead of their time and excellent.
The 2 game bundle is a must buy for everyone. LoL 3 on the other hand only for hardcore fans of the series (and that only for those who would tolerate a relative blunder).
Lands of Lore is interestingly an upgrade in this edition compared to the original game. The midi music is the best sounding I've ever heard it and the graphics look crisp and bright! The game itself is a pleasurable mix of puzzles and combat without either being too complex and if you look around you can find a compass, a map, and a lantern to make every different scenario slightly more convenient.
You can really hear the original Westwood team from the music to some returning voice actors from the Kyrandia series. There's a lot of personality you can't even find in a modern game like Legend of Grimrock with characters remarking on things and companions replying to them.
The second game is not nearly as smooth but was a noble effort and has the same charm and streamlined nature. I wish it had stuck to the isometric scheme but that's probably just me.
Overall great games and not just for nostalgia. They're pretty lengthy and you'll enjoy your time spent looking for secrets, fighting orcs, and casting spells.
Nostalgia bias incoming!
Throne of Chaos is a gem. It looks great, it sounds great and the story has enough twists and turns to keep you engaged until the end. The atlas makes exploration mostly a breeze which is, by the way, rewarded. It's simplified RPG design does nothing to distract from that and comes with the advantage that anyone can enjoy it without being afraid of grinding for anything or having a steep learning curve to climb. It does have a few problems like a particular cave going a bit mental with the enemy spawns and another spot where soft-locking yourself is possible. (Just keep multiple saves in rotation and you'll be fine.) But, otherwise, it is an instant classic and shows that this type of game dosen't need to be turned into a spreadsheet to be enjoyable.
Lands of Lore 2 is a mixed bag. It is good but flawed, very flawed. Which is a shame because it has the most interesting premise between the two. You play as Luther, the son of Scotia the antagonist of the first game. The feeling of being the underdog is real in this one. I removed a star because of this game in particular but don't take it as a warning not to play it. It is still worth it. Can't speak much about the issue because that might spoil a few surprises for you.
Don't be afraid to buy. It is a good package and the first game, in particular, aged like fine wine.
my vote doesn't go to the game itself. But this version I purchased. The game crash that doesn't allow me to play as soon as you get to the "cantina"...
