Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.
The Throne of Chaos is surely among the best cRPGs of all time. A game that maybe was not the best of its time when looking at graphics or sound, the story it narrates is among the best in computer videogaming history. Full of twists and surprises, it seizes the player and forces him or her to go through the whole of it and complete the game.
Definitely worth buying. The second part was not nearly as good, but The Throne of Chaos is definitely worth the price.
First: Throne of Chaos.
From the first time I played this game, I have always enjoyed it. All four characters have different skills, and the options you have throughout, such as whether you bluff, run away, or attack in a couple of places, or go evil and kill everything, or do quests to gain the favour of people.
The combat is good, and gives you the options to level any of your characters up as a fighter, mage, or rogue, depending on the choices of weapons.
Patrick Stewart does the voice of King Richard, and of the intro, adding his awesoness to the game too.
The storyline is amazing, the gameplay is, whilst dated, easy to understand, simple, and does not get in the way.
The music is a good addition, setting the mood, and adding even more into the game.
This game is among the top of older PC RPGs, and is worth every minute you spend exploring it.
Guardians of Destiny:
I will admit, when I played this one, I found it very different in style. Movement is a lot different, as is the interface. Also, you only play as one character throughout, and do not get to choose. You play as the son of the villain from Throne of Chaos, and as such, are not really on good terms with Gladstone.
In movement, you walk forward without the forward-to-move-one-point-on-the-map style of ToC, allowing you to run or walk.
The graphics are different as well, with a more 3D environment
Despite the differences in gameplay, Guardians of Destiny still maintains the brilliance of the first game, continuing the story with a good plot, interactions which affect the gameplay significantly, and some of the most beautiful scenes and music I have ever seen in a game.
Again, you can take the good route, or you can be evil and kill everyone you see. However, this game it matters a lot more, causing changes in the storyline, how other characters interact with you, even the ending.
One of the most unique points of this game is a curse the main character has. At some scripted points, and at random, you will transform, either into a tiny (and rather weak yet powerful in magic) lizard, or a huge strong beast (which hardly jumps, can use no magic, but hits like a truck), which also affects your gameplay and tactics.
Neither game has a grinding feel to it, you level up skills as you play the story, making it an immersive and entertaining experience, backup up by amazingly well done music, plots, and visuals.
Overall, I would recommend both of these games to anyone, and suggest playing them as soon as possible. You will not regret it.
Lands of Lore 1 and 2 are two very different games - each masterpieces in their areas. Th very reason why many people here say that LOL 2 was bad, is that it is not the same kind of game as LOL 1. LOL 1 is a Dungeon Crawler like Dungeon Master, Ultima Underworld or the late Legend of Grimrock. LOL 2 is a much story richer adventure-like RPG with a lot of backstory to explore, a lot of riddles and a lot of secret areas and secret actions that can be performed. If you do not know it, you may think that LOL2 is a linear interactive Movie, but instead it is the most interactive 3d RPG I ever saw. There are so much alternate ways to do things: for example you can blow up the first village, assassinate their King, be simply friendly with them or ignore it alltogether. In the Prologue alone (which seems quite linear) you can float a cavern, access a secret waterfall, kill the guards or leave them be, destroy a bridge, talk to your army and many more - or you simply run to the exit.
It is clear that such a game will not make people happy expecting a game like LOL 1. But it is not fair to bash it like that. LOL2 has such a great story, such interactivity, a great alchemy system, cool magic, intelligent fighting like using your surroundings and many more. Buy it and play it!
This is a great deal for $5.99, as each title is easily worth this much alone. I prefer Throne of Chaos because the sequel forces you to play as a certain type of person, and is too full of FMV distractions. The combination of photos and 3D navigation is not as attractive as the hand-drawn look of the first title. But don't let these minor complains about Guardians of Destiny deter you from picking up this fantastic light RPG bundle today!
Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos was Westwood Studio's private venture after creating the first two wonderful Eye of the Beholder games for SSI.
The first installment in the LOL series is fantastic, Westwood studios was the king of pixel art and intro cut-scenes from the golden renaissance of RPGs on PC from 1984-1994. But LOL 2 was delayed for a very VERY long time because Westwood studio had a difficult time internally adjusting to more modern ways of gaming. 3D graphics and environments proved too difficult for Westwood Studio and this shows in how terrible the game play and graphics are in LOL 2 (and LOL 3). Confusion with including awful FMV of employees dressed up in ren-fest outfits and acting poorly in front of the camera makes LOL 2 feel more like a joke than a game. Its a shame Westwood didn't just stick with what they excelled in. Play and enjoy the first installment of Lands of Lore, but don't bother with any more. LOL 2 & 3 are an embarrassment .
