About the game
They took your freedom. It's time to take it back!
Freedom Fighters is an intense third-person action game set in an alternate history New York during the invasion of a foreign superpower. Take on the role of Chris Stone, a hard-working plumber, and rise through the ranks of the resistance to prove yourself as a charismatic leader.
Liberate supplies, scavenge weapons and use the 'recruit and command' system to grow the resistance and lead up to 12 freedom fighters into strategic conflicts throughout the campaign. Travel across the city and complete interconnected missions where your actions in one level affect the battles in another.
Originally released in 2003, IO Interactive's cult classic is now available digitally in its original form for the first time.
About the soundtrack
The Freedom Fighters Soundtrack features 18 tracks that are produced by acclaimed music composer Jesper Kyd. Combining live choir performances by the Hungarian Radio Choir with techno beats and other electronic instruments, Kyd effortlessly captures the vibe of the game and the epic quest to liberate New York from a foreign superpower.

Freedom Fighters is great concept-wise, the music equally so, it takes a bit of strategy of what targets to take down first to weaken enemy forces before you can launch a attack on the enemy HQ outright (although you're never stopped from attempting to do so) the downside is it's archaic shooting, the weapons have a very large spread, the HUD doesn't scale well to modern resolutions and the AI is dumb as rocks.
So it's a big give and take but for what it was at the time, it's still considered a gem.
take my money, GOG!
it'S been so long since i played that game!
it's weird, because even if the game looks and feels kinda generic, it's anything but. there's a depth of play here that, once you experience it, will make you want to come back for more, again and again, trying to beat any given level in a different way.
the fact that you can play a portion of a level, get back to the sewers(hub area) then enter and play a part of another level, then go back to the first one... is pretty nice also. adds even more strategy, and also gives you the chance to crank up the challenge, if you feel like it.
i've always loved how you can tackle any given situation: do i go in with my squad, all guns blazing,(or, if you're the Rambo type, alone) as all hell breaks loose around you, or; do you issue a cover fire order to your squad, while you try a flanking maneuver, or; pick most of them off with a sniper rifle before going in?
assaulting a machine gun emplacements was always my favorite moment, throwing a few grenades in, then run in to pick off the remaining soldiers before they had the chance to get back up, and then turn the machine gun on them.
each weapon behaves VERY differently(as they should), and depending on what you have, you might have a harder time finishing your mission, or you might need to finish it in a completely different way.
of course, all i've said above is pretty commonplace in games nowadays, but, for the time, it was pretty well executed and thought out.
to round all of that up, add an awesome soundtrack that convey the feeling of how big a predicament you're in: the USA are on their knees, russians have crushed most of their forces, ruling its people with a steel fist. you're the last spark of resistance, a daunting mission awaits you. it's cool, love the what if scenario.
i always loved a game where a sniper can take you down in one shot. always a challenge to pick them off before they pick you off.
that crouching walk, tho...XD
I remember playing this back in 2003.
I forgot what it was all about,
I even forgot it's name..
But I do remember that day, 18 years ago, and the feelings I had.
I stayed at home alone (sick probably) and marathoned it from start to finish, no interrupts- just me and the game. I still remember how much I enjoyed. Best sick day ever !
That was a fun "cranberry" in 2003 (when I played it first), until in 2022 it became my reality.
After the liberation the northen part of the country where I live, I can say that the cruelty of the Russian troops in the game is underestimated. In reality, it's much scarier. Call of Duty was closer to the truth.
I hope everyone understand why this game wouldn't survive if it was made today. I always hear about devs afraid of expressing different artistic visions because they may get cancelled or shamed.
Eidos was such a great company. GOG has many of their best games. I never played this game when younger, but I can totally admire what devs made here. They used the same engine as Hitman 1 but it lacks the proyectile physics of that game, which was similar to max payne 1.
The story is nothing deep but it's brave in the political/ideological concepts involved. Or perhaps it's only brave for today's standards...
