Description
Explore, fight, survive and unravel mysteries in this unique and unforgiving 3D isometric RPG set in an original dark, low fantasy world. Exanima's exceptional attention to detail and realistic simulation of all things aim to provide a deeply immersive and dynamic gameplay experience.

This game features a very deep, truly physics based combat system. This is not just some animation feature, it is a fundamental difference that is central to gameplay. Real momentum, forces and collisions are always at play here, every nuance of your inputs is crucial to the outcome. This will likely be unlike anything you've played before and may take some practice, but can be hugely rewarding and the skill cap is virtually infinite. It is not particularly fast paced or difficult but it does require you to pay attention, it is very tactical and just casually pressing buttons won't get you very far!
  • A deep skill based combat system
  • Complex and smart AI
  • Fully interactive environments
  • An advanced damage model with accurate collisions and locational protection
  • Roguelike elements
  • Arena mode to hone your combat skills.

Something Actually New!

I've been playing Exanima since the first alpha version was released several years ago and man has it come a long ways since then! Nearly every single aspect of the game has been improved and continues to do so on a regular basis. Bare Mettle releases patches and content updates quite frequently considering the small size of their team. Exanima is one of the most innovative games I've played in the past 20 years. Instead of using static animations characters move based off of motion synthesis (over 200 simulated muscles) which allows for very dynamic gameplay; every single fight plays out in a unique fashion. The physics are also applied to everything in the game so it's possible to use the environment in creative ways, like dropping an item in front of someone to trip them or barricading a door with a bench, thus preventing it from opening. Another amazing thing that I haven't seen done before is the accurate collisions which affects gameplay in very significant ways. For example, when using an axe in order to get an effective strike you need to actually land the blow with the head of the axe; hitting with the shaft won't do much damage but it may block an incoming strike or become entangled on the opponent's weapon, body, etc. On the other hand, weapons with long, sharp blades can do drawing cuts with nearly the entire blade length so even small strikes can be quite deadly. Another thing that relates to the accurate collisions is that armor only protects what it actually covers (and armor can be layered on top of each other in realistic ways). The game will not hold your hand and it encourages the player to think before acting. In the story mode it's up to you to figure out what's going on by paying attention to your surroundings (things are very deliberately placed and everything has a purpose for existing which can give you clues), reading texts/books/scrolls/parchment, etc. As you start to piece together the bits of lore it leaves you wanting more, to keep pressing on so you can find more clues to determine if you really have figured things out or if you're being misled (perhaps intentionally, perhaps unintentionally). The dark, eerie atmosphere combined with never knowing what may be lurking around the next corner really creates a suspenseful gameplay experience which drew me in from the start and kept me glued to my seat the entire time. If any of this sounds like it may be the type of game you're interested in I highly recommend you give Exanima a try :). Just be patient and try not to get too frustrated when starting out; due to the complexity of the game it does have a rather steep learning curve. If you are cautious and make decisions based off what you would do in real life then you should be okay.

Don't waste your time and money.

In all honesty, the game had potential but potential does not make a game that is worth buying if the potential is never reached. This game is part of a project that has been in the development for at least 9 years and was promised to their backers to be released and delivered in May 2012, now soon 7 years ago. The game promised many features which never arrived. Features like an open world to explore, six different types of magic, ranged weapons, equipment customization and much more. The game in its current state is tedious, frustrating and mundane. There is some novelty to it, that it being a physics-based game, yet that novelty wears off within minutes if you've ever played a physics-based game before, like Human: Fall Flat or any Totally Accurate -- game by Landfall. The most fun you can find in this game lies in the Arena, not in the main game, where you instead walk a dungeon which feels more like a maze, sprinkled with various enemies, where ultimately your only goal is to find slightly better equipment along the way and find the right door needed to progress. The enemies themselves aren't particularly intelligent, but that's mostly excused away by saying things like "they are undead of sorts" like zombies. In terms of RPG elements, there's not much to come for at all. There's no real dialogue and all the story you will ever find will come in the form of various books or notes that the player may as well just skip reading or completely miss, all while not feeling sorry in any way about it. This game is really not what it says on the tin.

Something new, definitely worth trying

OK, to the reviewer who thinks the positive reviews are fishy, since the game just came out: The game has been on Steam for a while now. I have currently 126 hours played of it.(and I played the alpha before that) We know what we're talking about. And consider this, I bought the game for the third time now (plus two copies I got for my friends) - I want to support the devs THAT much. This game does many things in new ways which feel alien at first, but are very rewarding and entertaining when you get used to them. It's not perfect, certainly, there are aspects which need to be worked on, or those that are controversially designed and won't be for everyone. But I feel these devs deserve my support for attempting to make a game like this. It's already so much fun and it does so many things I like - I can't help but hope they have the means to continue for a long time.

Physics baised RPG fun, tad frustrating

Only just obtained this game today (as I type this) and i am impressed with how different this is to most RPGs, it's difficult, it WILL frustrate you, but the small details, the unique combat and feel of this game is well worth the price. A huge part of it's charm is the physics. Characters react to surfaces and objects, you can trip over a small stone randomly which is a laugh out loud moment. And as an added bonus being able to play Buckaroo with your character never gets old. DON'T be put off straight away, keep at it and you will truly enjoy this amazingly unique game. Good: Physics Gameplay Bad: combat at times can be taxingly difficult Ugly: Some of the hair style choices... mushroom top anyone?

RPG of the future

It's like golf: golf is nothing but frustration and rage until you learn some basic mechanics and get a couple of good shots. A little practice and you actually get good. You can't learn this game by reading a manual or watching a video, you have to do it. Reviews under3 hours playtime are generally negative. Reviews over 5 hours are generally very favorable. Once you can beat the arena on novice you could try the dungeon, though it is quite a bit harder with the tight quarters. Remember this is pretty much just a playable alpha demo for the real game: Sui Generis which, on their current schedule, will probably come out right after Yeshua returns.
