Matchmaking DRM

First off I want to say this is a great game. Very cute and very fun to play. The game play is solid. If I was to give a review based on the game play alone it would likely be a 5. However I shop at GOG strictly to avoid DRM. Avoid it like the plague. This includes any and all third party services that render a product non-functional OR limited. Sadly like many games coming to GOG now this one falls into the limited category. To play multiplayer in this game in any way, shape or form you need an internet connection to connect to 'matchmaking service'. I am being deliberately vague as that is literally how the game presents it. Doesn't even seem to have any additional functionality other than being a third party service that you HAVE to connect to for any multiplayer. Now you might think "Why is that an issue?" My answer would be, because that is a form of DRM. It is a system by which the multiplayer portion of the game is only functional with the internet. So if you wanted to play the game in a non-internet based LAN. You are out of luck. I think GOG really needs to revise how they present these games and remove the 'multiplayer' tag and replace it with 'online multiplayer' or even just 'online' as there are plenty of old games I play multiplayer in a LAN that do not require an internet connection. I get the need for ease, I even get the need to have matchmaking. What I do not get is how a company can stick by the DRM-free when forced third party matchmaking is DRM. It might not be heavy handed DRM but it is still "You want to use this feature of our product, you connect to our service". That is DRM. What happens in 5-10 years if the matchmaking goes down? I don't like gimped products and I'd like to be warned in the future if such a product is to be gimped. (limited) in such a way.

Dude, where's my LAN multiplay?

I didn't especially want to jump on the bandwagon, but the game really really wanted me to leave a review, so here it is. - If you don't care about single player, you can add an extra star. The game is a fine single-player experience, - If you only want to crush your little brother in MP... Then you better hope there's a matchmaking server ready and willing to let you play with him. Some other, older titles on GOG have the same issue, of course, but in this day and age I would expect better.

Dungeon Keeper 2 + Warcraft 3 + Humour

Dungeons 3 is a very enjoyable game and a refreshing take on dungeon management and RTS games. The graphics are beautiful, the voice acting is great and the music is so good. The narrator's familliar voice and narrating style fits well with the humour and all the references make me smile and shake my head at the same time. I was confused at first thinking it would be more like the DK games but the tutorial explains everything very well. It's an easy to understand game but hard to master. The overworld has all the same controls as an RTS with all the base building happening underground in the twisted DK style. If you liked the Dungeon Keeper and the Warcraft RTS series... and maybe The Stanley Parable... you'll love this game! My only 4 cons to the game are: 1. The UI is a bit difficult to use with everything being at the very edges of the screen. 2. The humour is a bit in-your-face and too much for my taste. 3. There is zero customization for your hero. 4. I miss the old, demonic sounding narrator of the DK series. If these points don't bother you, this is a 5 star game, but I just can't give it a full 5 starts. Dungeons 3 is an amazing game and I'm just happy to have a good, modern DK game again.

Brilliant narrative and decent gameplay

I was a fan for Bullfrog and I've played Dungeon Keeper 2 for many many hours in my childhood. In the past few years, I've always keep an eye for its (likely) predecessors, tried a few but none of them met my expectations. So far I've had a couple of hours in this game and I think this might be the most enjoyable predecessor I've played. There are a few things I think worth mentioning about his game: 1. This game has improved a few things from DK2, such as room building and minion managing. The difficulty is fairly good, the normal difficulty is not too hard but still takes patience to beat. Each level doesn't feel too repetitive for there are many ways to play it. 2. I think the narrator is from "The Stanley Parable" and he's doing a very great job this time too. The narrative was cleverly written with a bunch of humorous dialogs and funny "not references", making it very enjoyable for the campign (tutorial included). 3. Three complete different systems of minions and the overworld(the Good's) part offers more possibilities on game strategies, more tactics to try out. I think this is particular better than DK2 where I would always just horde a lot of black knights, mistress and warlocks and throw them to the enemies. I'm from chinese so my English might not be very good. In short I think it's good and a worthy predecessor to DK2. Still I haven't got to the end of the game, I'll update my review if I think there's anything differnt.

Great Game, minor bugs, forced humor

Mechanics and Visuals are very well fleshed out. There are some bugs here and there, which are a little bit annoying, but they have not stopped me from playing. The humor is forced at points so it can feel overwhelming, it's simply "too much" - it feels like it tries to be funny at all times and at all costs - less would have been more in that regard. Still, it is indeed a very enjoyable game.
