DOOM (2016)

Doom 2016 (from here on referred to as DOOM) takes everything you loved about the classic Doom 1 & 2 and turns it up to 666. The game is fast paced and encourages quick twitch timing for speed runs. However, the game is very forgiving, even on Ultra-Violence (very hard). You get enough ammo for each battle. You're never unprepared for what comes next. It's your skill that makes the difference. As difficulty ramps, the game teaches you what you need to know, then throws you in to apply it. Mastering the fundamentals and learning enemy patterns is key. If you die, it's because you need more practice. The bosses include the Cyber-Demon and Spider-Mastermind. Both have patterns that are read, rinse, repeat. Once you know the patterns, fighting them isn't that difficult. It's the heavies that cause problems because they're often paired with hordes of enemies. Balancing the fodder with the heavy is key to success. Like Doom and Doom 2, DOOM features tons of secrets. John Romero and his team had the philosophy that "If you can see it, you can get to it" for Doom. DOOM follows that mantra. I didn't find all the secrets, but the ones I saw and searched for were obtainable. DOOM isn't without its flaws. A fully upgraded shotgun is all you need for most of the game. The face that you can carry a single weapon to victory is a slight let-down. Contrastly, Doom Eternal requires players to use certain weapons on certain enemies. Given the choice between these two, I'd rather let players choose the weapon they want over forced weapon switching. DOOM is a fast paced, shooter that is fun to play. While Doom Eternal takes more of a platforming approach, I prefer DOOM's flat level design with a higher focus on combat over platforming. I have purchased DOOM (2016) on PS4, Switch, and now Gog. To buy a game for multiple platforms says a lot. I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND this title.

The 2016 release of DOOM is undoubtedly an exceptional masterpiece. With its retro FPS mechanics and exhilarating high-speed combat, it successfully made me fall in love with the series. If you're a fan of shooters but haven't experienced this game yet, trust me—this is an opportunity you shouldn't miss. My concerns primarily revolve around the soundtrack bundle version. Unfortunately, this edition didn't quite meet my expectations. First, the soundtrack is provided in MP3 format rather than lossless audio—a disappointing choice for compositions by an artist who redefined a genre of metal music. These works deserve higher-quality distribution in the game store. Second, given the strained relationship between composer Mick Gordon and id Software following DOOM: Eternal, I'm conflicted about purchasing the soundtrack separately when it's already available on streaming platforms. I'm uncertain whether my purchase would properly support or compensate the talented composer behind these incredible creations. Final verdict: If you love shooters or DOOM, go ahead and buy the game without hesitation. It's a gorefest of gibbing and shooting, fatalities at every combat, combos at every step, fun at every second. Well worth the money.

There is something to be said about a good old fashioned "kill everything is sight" game. In 2014 or 2015 Id Software released trailer for Doom 4. A modern military style shooter that everyone hated. In response to the feedback, they scrapped the modern shooter setting and systems in favor of something more simple. A fasted paced run and gun shooter with an AAA budget. There's really nothing else so add. It's simple addictive shooting fun. Jump in and just kill everyone.

It's 2016. For ten years, the FPS market has been dominated by military-themed cover shooters. Indie "boomer shooters" aren't really a thing yet. Duke Nukem Forever, Rage and Wolfenstein:TNO weren't quite what you hoped. Quake and Half-Life are missing in action. And then, Doom comes back. Released when we needed it most, this reboot brought back many of the retro design elements that we sorely missed: the levels are typically non-linear and rely on exploration and key-hunting; the guns require no reloading, and enemy attacks are avoided by staying on the move rather than cowering behind cover. Yet Doom 2016 isn't just great because it plays like previous entries in its series, but also because it plays like you've always wanted them to... without even realizing it. It's unafraid to experiment with new mechanics that spice the combat up, like alt-fires for the guns and the aptly named Glory Kills - hilariously brutal executions that actually don't break the pace of the fight. Encouraged to be as nimble and aggressive as possible, you feel unbeatable... even though you very much aren't! Overall, it's expertly-crafted, fun, fast, and engaging. The enemies, guns and levels are all great fun to get acquainted with, and it's all wrapped up in a nice art direction and minimalistic storytelling that really enhance the "Metal AF" feel of it all. Does this game have issues though? Well, I'm not sure the upgrade systems add much, though at least they're easily ignored. It's well optimized, but the file size is bloated. The platforming is clunky and sometimes as deadly as demon encounters themselves. And that's it: the rest of the experience is top notch. In the context of its franchise and genre, Doom 2016 truly respects what used to make these old shooters awesome while taking their epicness even further; on its own merit, it's simply a masterpiece of action and a blast to play. It's reasonably priced and accessible to all types of gamers, so get ready to rip and tear!
