This retro-inspired 2D Action RPG might outright surprise you. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.
CrossCode is all about how it plays! Take the best out of two popular genres, find a good balance between them and make a great game. That’s what CrossCode does. You get the puzzles of Zelda-esque dungeons and are rewarded with the great variety of equipment you know and love from RPGs. During the fast-paced battles you will use the tools you find on your journey to reveal and exploit the enemies' weaknesses and at the same time will be able to choose equipment and skills for a more in-depth approach in fighting your enemies.
What's included in the full version:
Dive into a massive adventure with a playtime of around 30-80 hours
Explore a large world with 7 unique areas and hidden secrets all over the place
Fight over 120 enemy types including 30+ boss fights
Enter 7 expansive dungeons, all with with unique themes and puzzle mechanics
Master up to 100 combat arts and even more passive skills
Solve over 100 quests with a great variety of tasks and unique challenges
If you're into 16 bit graphics and rpg/hack and slash games then this is the one for you. It's so beautifully put together. The mechanics are smooth, the music is great, the story is not dull, and the combat is impeccable and doesn't feel boring. Highly recommend. Grab it while it is still on sale!
Nice Story, nice skill systems, very good combat and boss fights. The characters are charming, there are really smart jumping puzzles in this game, culminating in very good dungeons which test your skills. There is a good amount of personalisation and very nice metroidvania elements. Apart from the obvious inspirations this reminds me the most of Kingdom Hearts 1. A charming mix of metroidvania, jumping and parcour, riddles and puzzles, beautifull story and music, wonderfull worlds and very smooth combat. Basically KH1 in 2.5D without Disney and with better progression systems.
title says it all, it is shockingly good
got it as an experiment, thinking worst come to worst i would just refund it.
now i have told pretty much everyone with an ear and vague interest in gaming specifically puzzle, platformer, action combat with a nice coating of rpg to try it out.
it is adorable and controller keyboard snapping hard and i love it!
have not tried to see how it is to play it with reduced difficulty but the option is there
combat feel chunky and impactful, nice use of camera movements and sounds with visual effects
puzzles incorporate the gameplay so your "basic attack" is part of the puzzle
and the art. the art is amazing
The battle system is very good.
The story is very very good.
I loathe the puzzles.
For the first 20 hours the puzzles are okay.
At around the 30 hour mark I turned the puzzle timer down to 50%, the minimum setting.
At the 40 hour mark I had had enough, I began using Youtube for all puzzles.
The worst part of the puzzles is you always feel like an idiot.
The puzzles introduce the most basic of concepts to you, ie this block does that, this power does this to that block, then in the next room proceeds to completely catch you off guard by shuffling the deck.
What I'm trying to say is that the puzzles do not build off of each other making you feel like you're learning, getting smarter, and are in control.
It's more like aceing a physics exam, then being immediately thrown into an english literature exam.
Or perhaps...going from playing Tetris, to playing Bejewelled, to playing Myst.
Even worse...if you're an acheivement hunter, the puzzles are timed.
There are also puzzles to defeating the bosses, especially the final boss.
These puzzles are not difficult as long as you have the stats to survive the battle to figure them out.
If your stats are high you will not need a second try or Youtube to figure it out.
I like those kinds of puzzles.
There is one other bad facet of the puzzle system that extends to the rest of the game.
Frequently you do not know if you have the ability to do something.
Can you get that chest on this screen with your current power set?
No way...it's too far away.
However, in actuality you could, you just needed to enter the screen from 3 screens ago.
Can you find and talk to an NPC and his NPC friend in the city in order to further the plot?
Well I went all over every inch of that city exploring and I never saw him or his friend.
Oh...I got the bad ending...so...he and his friend WERE there!?!?
DAMNIT!!!
I'm giving it a 4/5 because the battle system, world, and story are good enough to make me power through the 500 obtuse puzzles.
