Betrayer is a first person action adventure game that takes you to the New World at the turn of the 17th century.
The year is 1604. You sailed from England expecting to join a struggling colony on the coast of Virginia. Instead, you find only ghosts and mysteries. What catastrophe blighted the land and drained it of color and life? Where are the settlers and tribes who lived here?
Clue by clue, you must piece together the story of what befell this doomed settlement and find a way to set things right. You will be hunted by corrupted Conquistadors and ravening shadows as you explore an expansive wilderness in order to trace the brief, tragic history of the colony and search for survivors.

Slow paced FPS, extremely immersive, as creepy as beautyful.
I love the kind of weapons available (like flintlock pistlos, slow to reload) and I love that you can change the colours of the ambience as you wish: from black+white+red to hyper saturated.
It helps creating a different ambience, adds variation and maybe reduce the creepyness and sadness of the place if you need it
There is little negative that can be said about a free game.
If you don't like the black-and-white, don't worry. You can turn it off in the options' menu. It is just a filter, there is a perfectly colorful forest here, if you prefer. Make it as much or as little creepy as you feel comfortable with.
If there is anything you may by chance not like, it is that at first you will be clueless as to what you need to do to escape the first region after the tutorial. And that, once you know, the horror of the early game fades and doesn't return, for you soon realize that you don't need to bother with stealth and can outrun most enemies. From thee it is rinse and repeat the same couple of actions to remove the corruption from every new region. The late game is rewarding, though, and the ending is as weird as it befits a game of the genre.
The story is great. Even if it does feel like the same could have been told on two pages. The rest is backtracking through lots of empty woods, always listening for the wind--and clues--and fighting the same handful of enemies over and over again--which strangely only adds to the uncanny, uncomfortable idea of facing a faceless enemy.
If this sounds like a big collection of negatives, trust me, it is not. For the opposite is also true: The atmosphere is as great as it is unique. The setting is fantastically done. The game doesn't try to be anything it can't be. What it does, it always does well. It manages to pull off the atmosphere it is aiming for. No bugs to speak of--what is not to like?
AND! It is a ridiculous amount of fun. So what are you waiting for? Go get it. Now!
Betrayer is a horror stealth-shooter game that was an abandonware, luckily GOG released it for free! You play as an unnamed man wanting to join a colony in America, only to discover everyone's gone except for a mysterious maiden in red. With her help, you both are to uncover what happened here. Set in colonial times, you are equipped with weapons such as bows, crossbows, pistols, and muskets as you fight enemies like undead Conquistadors, flaming Natives, and skeletons.
Many people said that the gameplay is repetitive, and sadly they are correct. Outside the opening and ending, nothing much happens and basically follows the same pattern. Enter new area, restore Otherworld bell, help ghosts find clues, clean corruption, repeat. No unique encounters, interesting new events, its all slow and calm, which kinda makes it more unsettling in its own way. But personally I don't find it boring. Especially once you get the better weapons that one-shot enemies and charms that enhance you.
While being promoted as a colorless game with only black, white, and red colors, luckily you can play with normal colors. I recommend 1.8 dark intensity, 1.2 light intensity, and 1.0 color saturation. Now, the forests are as beautiful as the ones in Skyrim. The Otherworld is still colorless though, so you can still experience the promoted style. Honestly I don't recommend staying colorless the whole game as it gets boring quick. Colorful real world and colorless Otherworld is the perfect balance.
Overall, Betrayer is a good game with a unique style, setting, and atmosphere, definitely worth your time if you like horror shooters. I'd recommend doing a bit of scavenger hunt instead of just rushing through, too, as it's quite fun and is a big part of the game. Many thanks to GOG and the (sadly disbanded) developer team who allowed this gem to be preserved!
I remember picking this up on Steam a long time ago, after a friend played it and recommended it as a cheap, interesting game.
It may win no prizes and fall a bit short in terms of replayability value, but it's definitely worth a look if you're on the hunt for an action-oriented adventure game with a slightly different setting/concept. It's great to see it's back among the living!
At a low price, I'd say give it a go - For free, it's a no-brainer!
Being in my late thirties, I don't have enough time for gaming anymore. This one looked interesting, so I tried it. Boy, isn't it awesome!
I can't seriously find not even a tiny flaw. The environment is well done, especially the ambient and background noises. Even though later in the game the main character gets strong enough not to worry about most encounters, I still tend to creep and crawl my way around the forest, just because of the thrill of it.
Fighting is just about OK. Man has to think about his ammo and general directions when in a bigger battle, which is alright.
And finally - the story has left me quite shaken. Hard just to describe it, just...
Well done!
