Description

The three time IGF award nominated 1000xRESIST is a thrilling sci-fi adventure. 1000 years in the future, humanity is all but extinguished and a disease spread by an alien occupation keeps the survivors underground. You are Watcher. You dutifully fulfil your purpose in service of the ALLMOTHER, until the day you learn a shocking secret that changes everything.

In the near future we learn we are not alone in the universe. A mysterious alien race of giant entities arrives. We call them the Occupants.

They are not hostile, but it doesn’t matter. Their arrival is a death sentence. Humanity is wiped out in a matter of months, succumbing to a disease the Occupants have brought to our planet.

There is one survivor, a teenage girl called Iris. Somehow she is immune.

1000 years later. Iris is not only immune but immortal. She has birthed a new society consisting exclusively of her own clones.

She calls them Sisters. They call her the ALLMOTHER.

Unlike the ALLMOTHER, the sisters are not immune. They must wear masks 24/7 to avoid breathing the diseased air even in the Orchard - an underground bunker where they live in constant fear of an Occupant attack.

The ALLMOTHER lives in her own compound on the front line of the war with the Occupants. All Sisters dream of one day being able to take the train and join her in the fight.

  • Principal - Head of administration and oversight of the Orchard
  • Bang Bang Fire - Head of military
  • Knower - Head of knowledge preservation
  • Fixer - Head of engineering
  • Healer - Head of medical and cloning

And you - the new Watcher.

Your role is unique. You have the great privilege of reliving and interpreting the memories of the ALLMOTHER through a process known as Communion, made possible by Secretary, your floating AI companion.

As the game begins, you are excited to embark on your first Communion.

But all is not well.

Your closest sister, Fixer, comes to you with a dangerous revelation. You have been lied to. The ALLMOTHER is not what she claims to be.

Fixer’s claims rock the foundations of your world, throwing everything you know and believe into doubt.

After Fixer is executed for her treason, it falls to you to discover the truth.

Dive into the memories of the ALLMOTHER.

Explore pivotal moments in her life from high school days and the arrival of the Occupants to the creation of the Orchard and the birth of the first sisters.

Jump back and forth through moments in time within these memories to solve puzzles and access locked off areas and secrets.

In between Communions, explore the Orchard - a large underground hub area which houses you and your sisters, has many characters to speak to, and holds many things to uncover.

Find the truth and reclaim your legacy.

Experience perspective shifts both literal and metaphorical as the game blends between 3rd person adventure, visual novel and first person walking simulator while throwing twists, turns and revelations at you until you question everything you think you know.

Born from an eclectic set of inspirations, including the games of Yoko Taro (NieR:Automata), the anime of Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue) and Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice), and even the theatre of Robert Wilson (Einstein on the Beach), 1000xRESIST tells a story in ways only a game can while simultaneously bringing fresh ideas to interactive storytelling from theatre, dance, performance art, and cinema.

Enjoy more than 10 hours of playtime brought to life with over 15,000 lines of fully voiced dialogue from a brilliant cast of Asian-Canadian actors and an incredible soundtrack from two composers.

Fantastic!

Only finished chapter 1 but I can already see this is going to be a brilliant game. The pacing, the structure, the storytelling - everything unfolds just right. Every detail has meaning and every meaning has importance for the world. It's a commentary on our current circumstances, on being young, on feeling like an outsider. And all of this without being annoying or over explaining. For the devs: thank you for making this game and being so true to your vision! It's hard work.

Very authoral and artistic Walking Sim

For me this is one more of these indies that super commits to their view and tries to convey the story in a very specific and unique way. Is necessary to explicit that this is a walking sim that reward you when you curiously explore its world - not necessarily with gameplay rewards or nothing gamefied, but regarding its world, its narrative, its reflections. Surprising in many ways, my favorite feeling with this experience its the frequent change of 'type of narrative', or when they use a miscellaneous of tools to enhance a specific feeling, message or point of view. I personally don't think is for everyone out there, because is a narrative game about a character called Watcher - so you will be walking a lot and trying to understand a lot in your own. The character is NOT passive, can talk with everyone and do things - I just want to be clear that is a walking simulator that the situations, enviroment, ambience, how the characters behave; all of this IS the story. To not spoil anything I will only spoke this: if you like narrative, to be pensive about issues, to reflect about what you perceiving, and to explore A LOT in the levels. This game is for you to enjoy, to allow yourself to the experience. In a final comment, this game for me had a vibe of Kentucky Route Zero regarging ambience and presentation, and surprisingly the eeriness of solitude presented on Signalis (but not its horror nor dread).

Hekki grace

An interactive movie I would say. Settled on a fictional, near human extinction background where the player struggles to make sense of what they are seeing. Information is presented purposely fragmented in space and time, leaving lots of options to imagination and producing a catching “I need to know more” feeling that binds one finding to the next. On the technical side, the graphics are stylized and clean –perhaps they feel a little bit simple at times– which, combined with a great voice acting, make for a powerful communication channel in the most dramatic moments. Game play is simple, but navigating the world seems a little bit heavy sometimes. I played this title in Linux through Wine without any issue that I could notice. I would totally recommend this title, in particular if you are looking for a fresh story.

Amazing story and presentation

Even though this is definitely a low budget game, the people behind it really put everything into it. Definitely give it a try if you like Nier: Automata, anime or sci-fi in general and don't mind walking sims.

Work of Art, Full of Technical Flaws

1000xResist (“One Thousand Times Resist”) is a mix of a walking simulator and a kinetic visual novel. There are one puzzle (unless one counts the “interact with everything” objective as a puzzle), one timed action sequence, and one choice that matters, with the previous 10 hours being the context to make it. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting, where humanity died from the extraterrestrial invasion and a plague, with only one human and her clones remaining. The human, Iris, the All-Mother, is worshipped by her clones as a goddess. The protagonist, the Watcher, is a clone whose duty is to observe the All-Mother’s memories. The story is focused on the topics of revolution (the Hong Kong Umbrella Revolution, in particular) and generational trauma. The game is as artistic as it can get. The visual and the sound design are reasonably simple and expressive. All dialogues are voiced and there are very few facial animations. In terms of gameplay, the only possible challenge is to navigate the labyrinthine locations to interact with the next objective, but the exploration never feels rewarding. Only the main hub has a map, which becomes unavailable at some point. Occasionally, the story presentation becomes less straightforward and more abstract and invocative, but just walking forward solves it. The choices in the dialogues throughout the game affect nothing and it was frustrating to see the protagonist do or say unwise things automatically. For the technical part, the controls are not rebindable, though they are not uncomfortable. The visual settings are lacking, so I was stuck with the post-effects and the game was trying to heat up my GPU a few times. There are 10 save slots, with one of them being the auto-save, and it is possible to replay the unlocked chapters. Overall, I think that games like 1000xResist should be celebrated, but the technical and gameplay flaws make it less appealing, thus, I would recommend it with at least 50% discount.
