Like most GOG DOS releases this uses dosbox however you can use the ECWolf sourceport to play the game using modern controls

To do so is easy until the ability to detect the GOG files are added in by my friend Blzut3 the deveolper of ECWolf, you will have to manually set it up.

First download the source port from here:
32-Bit Version
64-Bit Version

Unzip the files to your installation directory, I use a custom directory without Galaxy so mine is C:\GoG Games\

so for Wolf3D it would be:
"C:\GOG Games\Wolfenstein 3D"

Put all the files from the zip into the directory and just double click "ECWolf.exe" and configure to your tastes.

For Spear of Destiny you have to put the files from the zip in the M1, M2 and M3 directories and run each ecwolf.exe separate to play the respective mission.

Create shortcuts as you see fit, you cannot do this through galaxy sadly.

Hope this helps feel free to ask questions.

Has that source port been updated with vsync yet? Last time I played it there was no vsync option in the game and even forcing vsync through GPU settings didn't work.

Nice, that was my one complaint with it when I tried it out awhile back.
NO EC wolf execute file after I extract the files.

Are you sure you didnt extract ecwolf.exe from the zip? dont extract anything from the licenses.zip in the zip.
I recommend to download High Resolution pack to ECWolf http://1drv.ms/21GJdSv (http://forum.drdteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=174&t=6734) and then execute: ecwolf.exe --data wl6 -file ECWolf_HQpack.pk3 to have wolf3d in highres.
Setting up ECWolf with the GOG version of Wolf 3D and Spear of Destiny has become a lot easier now.

Just download the latest ECWolf from here (any download from 2016 should do) and run it. It'll detect your game files automatically by looking in the Windows registry for GOG's install paths.

You only need to install ECWolf in one place, and it doesn't need to be installed in a place where you have also installed W3D or SOD.
How do I activate debug mode with ecwolf.exe?
http://maniacsvault.net/ecwolf/wiki/Debug_mode
I have a somewhat related question.
I wish to run a Wolfenstein mod named Wolfendoom, a fan made 'prequel' to Doom.

The levels run fine in ECwolf, what doesn't run is the help files and probably the end text files.
I have been asking on Doomworld what the issue could be and it apparently has to do with modifying the command line in a copy of the .exe file of ECwolf in order to make it recognize these help files.

I have given it several tries already but it refuses to load these modified text files. (in the beginning I even got the message that the files the modified command line refers to are not in the same directory. It is now past that)
I think it has something to do with that the Wolfendoom files have a very different name than regular Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny.
This I guess.

So:

E: I seemed to've answered my own question, dragging and dropping a gamemaps & maphead onto ECWolf loaded the map replacement for Wolf3D, used Wolfbel2 for testing. And tried a custom vswap and audiohed/audiot replacements (from RTCW3D) to satisfying results.

You don't need to drag and drop the head/dict files. ECWolf will find them.

E2: Another cool test, AReyeP's Wolfendoom works, minus the endart and helpart, the lack of source code changes means this one works perfectly as far as I can tell.

Weird. Why did he take those out of the vgagraph? You can make ECWolf load them, but you'll have to use the command line:

::: CODE :::
ecwolf.exe --file /path/to/audiot.wl6 /path/to/gamemaps.wl6 /path/to/vgagraph.wl6 /path/to/vswap.wl6 /path/to/helpart.wl6 /path/to/endart1.wl6 ...

The important thing is that the helpart/endart files are loaded after the vgagraph.
Based on this, here's what you can do without using the command line:
First, I suppose you have all the wolfdoom files in a folder. Select them all.
Then, drag and drop all these files on the ecwolf.exe icon.

They should all be loaded; at least it worked for me.
The text files finally worked but then the images got all screwed up, Wolfenstein's logo or other text images running through the help text, or displaying completely different images than the ones Wolfendoom normally shows.

I have honestly given this several tries, using both modification of the exe file by adding that command line, and by directly loading the files into ECwolf..

It is not even about playing the game for me any more, I just wanted to solve this puzzle as it was irritating the hell out of me.

But I give up, I can't seem to get it to run as it does on its own.
When I fire up ECWolf, the cursor on the menu keeps scrolling up. If I somehow get the game going, my character will move forward non-stop. There's nothing on my keyboard, and I have not issues in Windows/other programs. Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

EDIT- Nevermind, I left a force-feedback joystick plugged in, and that was the issue. Everything's fine now after unplugging it.
