Yes, so I seem to have a hard time moving around. Up/Down arrow keys don't seem to work (they did for a brief period when I switched from DirectX 7 to DirectX 6. And I was gleefully happy that I could make the game work properly. It didn't last, though. I read that you could move by pressing both mouse buttons but that didn't work either.

I have Vsync off, as usual.

I've also read that alt-tabbing (I do that a lot sometimes) can make the keyboard unresponsive too but that can be fixed by pressing alt or ctrl + alt.

I can look around with left/right arrow keys and the right mouse button just fine, though. Note that it's only movement that's problematic.

I've experimented by trying to run the game with only one core, though that didn't work as the sound got messed up when I was alt-tabbing back into the game. 4 cores worked fine, though, but didn't help with the movement issues.

I tried changing to compatability mode (XP) aswell but not even that helped.

I play on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate Edition.

My specs:

Intel Core i7 2600k
8gb RAM
Asus DCII GeForce GTX 780

So, uh...help?

Have you tried using the W key to move forward?
I just use a regular WASD type set up. Works fine.

Aren't those binded to some other things? Suppose it doesn't hurt to try and rebind the keys seeing as everything else has failed.

Edit: Okay, so I tried rebinding those keys. Didn't work too well. Restarted the game and was able to walk like, two steps and then it stops working again.

The default setting is to use the arrow keys, but often people change them.

If you haven't tried this already, try restoring the keyboard settings to default.
Is the keyboard a wireless or some kind of macro system?

Nope. Don't like to use wireless. It's a Saitek Eclipse II.

I did use the arrow keys first but it hardly worked.

I realised you'd tried the arrow keys to begin with, but resetting the keys to default after binding them to another format sometimes kicks the arrow system into gear (I've had that happen myself).

The only other suggestion I can think of is to completely re-install the game to see if that fixes your problem.

Good luck with it - Wizardry 8 is a super game and it's a shame you're having this problem.

Well...resetting to defafult didn't really change much. It worked to and from, sometimes being ridiculously hard to get moving after I got stuck. I rebinded to WASD setup, tried that, reset to default once more, etc. I even changd from Direct X7 to X6 (again).

I gave up last time in the middle of a fight when a rat tried to escape because I couldn't run after it due to this problem.

I may have to run it through Virtual PC.

Edit: I've found this thread on steam. That guy has the same problems except his was related to windowed mode. Someone also says that Direct X7 only works if Vsync is enabled. And having it enabled seems to run the game kinda choppy.

Such a shame.

I had this problem years ago when I loaded from the original disk onto a new computer. I'm trying to remember exactly what I did to resolve it and I'm wondering if it's worth uninstalling and reinstalling (if you've not tried that already).

I am talking about over 10 years ago mind you and my memory isn't so good I can exactly remember what solved the issue. Oh for instant recall.........

Tried removing the widescreen fix just to see if it changes anything, then running the game at maximum possible 4:3 resolution.

Edit: Worked slightly better but it's still hard to move around. And for some reason it still stretches the image despite me setting it to 4:3 and 1600x1200.

I've just had a look at the Properties section to see what I'm running Wizardry 8 in as I've also got Windows 7 64 bit and the GOG version works perfectly on my machine.

In the section called;

Short Cut - Run: Normal Window

Compatibility - I've not selected a mode. In Settings, I've selected: Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

I'm also running the program as an administrator

I don't know it any of this will assist, but thought it worth mentioning.

Fingers crossed

To have nGlide's settings work you'd have to change the renderer back to the Glide one.
Hey Trapster,

No sure if you got the issue to work or not yet, but I had the same problem. I read on a forum that switching to direct 6 will fix the problem. I tried and, and although it still breaks when I alt tab, I can hit tab a couple of times, and move backwards then I can move forward again. Not the best solution, but at least it works.

I don't know if this will fix it for you, but it's worth a shot. Good luck :)
I had this problem while using DirectX7 and the widescreen fix. Enabling VSync in my GPU control panel solved the issue completely. Just enabling it in-game won't work if your GPU settings are forcing it off.

As far as choppiness goes, I believe the problem people are having has to do with FRAPS. If I have FRAPS running, the game is so choppy it's unplayable. When I turn FRAPS off, the game runs completely smooth.

The only problem then is that VSync does, as usual, add lag to the mouse input. Thankfully it's not a fast paced game so it's not a big issue
