Wasteland 2 Known Issues

Though we strove to make Wasteland 2 as bug-free for release as possible for release, a small number of our fans are running into issues while playing. In this thread we're covering known ones and work-arounds we have for them.

Incompatible saves/characters

Exported characters and save files from the beta/early access version of the game are not officially considered compatible with the release version. It is extremely likely that if you experience significant/frequent issues, crashes, etc. and previously played the beta, your old save files are causing problems.

Simply delete the old saves and exported characters, and start a new game from scratch.

Crashes on Windows

There are a number of solutions to crashes which seem to help users. Below you'll find the ones we've discovered yield the best results.

1. Out of memory crashes

The most common crash type we reliably see is "out of memory" crashes. This occurs because of Wasteland 2's memory requirements, in combination with the "3 GB barrier" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier) affecting 32-bit operating systems.

Our minimum requirements for Wasteland 2 are 4 GB of RAM and we also highly recommend more than 4 GB RAM. Additionally, a 64-bit operating system is actually required for any program to be able to address more than about 3.2 GB of RAM.

Therefore, if you have a 32-bit OS and/or 4 GB of RAM or less, you may experience crashes playing Wasteland 2. To improve performance in cases upgrading these is not possible, we recommend you:

- Close background programs you are not using while playing the game to free up memory
- Turn-down in-game graphics options, especially the Texture Size option, to reduce memory use

There is an additional method you can use on 32-bit Windows installations to increase available memory to the game, however, it's not strictly supported by us and can lead to potential crashes, bugs or instability to your operating system. This may reduce or eliminate such out of memory crashes.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
To enable:

- Go to Start -> type in cmd.exe, right-click, Run as administrator.
- Type in: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072, press Enter
- Restart your computer.

To disable:

- Go to Start -> type in cmd.exe, right-click, Run as administrator.
- Type in: bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa, press Enter
- Restart your computer.

Windows XP
To enable:

- Right-click My Computer -> Properties.
- In System Properties, click the Advanced tab.
- Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
- Under System startup, click Edit. The Windows boot.ini file will be opened in Notepad.
- Create a backup of boot.ini file. Note: Boot.ini files may vary from computer to computer.
- Select in the boot.ini file: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
- Ctrl+C to copy the line, Ctrl+V to paste it directly below the original line
- Modify the copied line to include "/3GB", such as: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /3GB /fastdetect
- Save and close boot.ini.
- Restart your computer.
- When starting, select the 3 GB option.

2. Clearing the Windows registry of existing/old settings may resolve issues (note that afterwards, you will need to re-configure any custom settings like graphics, key bindings, etc.).

- Type "regedit" in your Start search field and press Enter, or go to Run -> regedit.exe
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then browse to Software/inXile/Wasteland 2
- Delete the entire "Wasteland 2" registry folder.

3. Third-party codec packs such as K-Lite, CCCP and more may cause problems. If you use these, please make sure that these are set to be used in authorized applications only (not Wasteland 2/wl2.exe), and not all applications.

Windows screen resolution crash or crash on startup

The symptoms for this are: unable to play fullscreen, game crash showing list of resolutions that can't be initialized, crashing after intro movies play.

To our knowledge, this problem is caused by a conflict with a third-party application your system has running in the background. To troubleshoot this, please perform a selective startup by using msconfig to reboot your computer with third-party programs disabled: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/run-selective-startup-system-configuration#1TC=windows-7

If the resolution crash issue disappears, then you can further troubleshoot which exact program is causing the problem by referring to the list shown in msconfig.exe.

Known programs which cause this issue:

- EVGA Precision X
- AMD Gaming Evolved (Raptr)

Windows font crash (frequent crashes during gameplay/starting game)

There is a rare Unity engine bug caused by a Windows font the engine is incompatible with being installed on your system. Deleting the offending font file may fix this crash if you are affected.

- Turn on display of hidden files in Windows: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/ (be sure you have selected both "Show hidden files" as well as unchecked "Hide protected operating system files")
- Navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts
- Look for and delete the files UNCLL.tff and UNCL_0.tff

If you have trouble with that method you can also try:

- Go to Start -> cmd.exe -> right-click, Run As Administrator
- Type in "cd C:\Windows\Fonts", press Enter
- Type in "del UNCLL.tff", press Enter
- Type in "del UNCL_0.tff", press Enter

Loading saves doesn't work/no save games listed

To speed up checking large numbers of save files, Wasteland 2 uses a "table of contents" file, TOC.txt. If it becomes corrupt or out of date (such as if you move save files in/out of the save folder outside the game itself), deleting this file will restore your saves.

- Go to your save folder: on Windows, \Documents\My Games\Wasteland2\Save Games
- Look for TOC.txt and delete it

When you restart the game, it will re-create a new version of TOC.txt that is up to date, and your saves will reappear.

Camera moving uncontrollably

This issue is almost always caused by a gamepad, joystick or other peripheral causing undesired input during gameplay. The easy work-around is to simply unplug it from your computer and then restart your game. If it persists even after restarting the game, you can try restarting your computer with the peripheral still unplugged.

Localization issues

Unfortunately, due to bugs in the game's non-English localizations, some keywords may not appear during conversations. This can have the effect of preventing game progress or cut off certain content. We are working hard with our dedicated localization editors and community helpers to get these issues resolved as quickly as possible, and will be updating localization on a going-forward basis both in official patches and smaller hotfixes.

As a work-around for the time being, if you run into an issue that appears to cause a keyword to not appear, please switch to English in the game's options menu temporarily and re-play that section of the game giving you trouble.

Editing save files, mods, etc.

Mods and save editing are something we are absolutely happy to let players do - play the game your way and have fun! However, we must stress that if you edit save files or use mods and run into a problem, we cannot provide assistance. Editing save files and using mods can and may very likely break something, somewhere in the game for you.

Unfortunately we cannot account for any such changes to the game; therefore if you need to contact us about an issue, please disclose any and all mods, third-party programs or save edits you are using in your report, and be absolutely sure to verify that the problem still exists if you remove these mods or revert to old, unedited saves.

=====

Wasteland 1 Known Issues

* Wasteland drops back to the desktop immediately after launching and it eventually closes the game out.
o Restarting your computer can fix the issue.
o If the issue persists, update your video card and monitor drivers and restart again.
o The game may not run on monitors below resolutions of 1280x720 and will dump to desktop if rejecting your resolution.
* A small subsection of Windows XP users may experience skipping in audio files.
o Currently no known fix.
* There are a few small mispronunciations in the paragraph VO.
* The game freeze frequently.
o This is a heritage issue which may be circumvented by using only the keyboard to control the game.
* A store disappeared.
o This is an old issue from the original game. To avoid this bug, you should always save (manually or by instantly leaving for another map) after exiting an important shop.

Thank you for posting this here. When I found this thread on the InXile forums, it told me precisely what was wrong with my game.

I would like to add a problem I had under Wine. If you're trying to install the GOG version for Windows under Wine, you might find it necessary to attach the /nogui argument; probably easiest to run it from the command line for that purpose. I hope that makes sense to y'all!
Is the popping sound I mention here: http://www.gog.com/forum/wasteland_1_the_original_classic/contious_popping_sound a Known issue?

It doesn't ring a bell but it sounds like a legacy issue. If you turned off the sounds of the wrapper (VA and music) then it's just playing sounds from the original.

Hmm. Well I can see that. I'm changing OS soon, maybe that will help. Thanks :)

Is there a work-around for this? I'm in the stone-age with a monitor that only goes up to 1024x768.

You are not alone, I too have this issue. Why should this be an issue there was no 1280x720 when the game was new. I loved this game and want to play desperately. I'm so mad I want to turn this game into a fine red mist.

Updated the original post with notes on Wasteland 2.
Hi,

Note for (Arch) Linux users:

Running ./start.sh from the tar.gz archive does not work; it outputs "Running Wasteland 2" followed by 5 other lines then nothing happens. As described in this topic for Debian, running directly Wasteland 2/game/WL2 works fine. I have only tested a few minutes in real game and everything worked (3D, video, audio) with an AMD Radeon HD 7750 and only the open source driver.
Hi. my Wasteland 2 crashes when I try to play the game, right after forming my party and I click play game, then chose my difficulty. It begins to load and it progress nearly completes then crashes.

i saw your font solution and went to do that but my computer does not have that font...even when I look at the hidden files and making sure I can view the protected system files.

I do not find the UNCLL.tff file

Any ideas? My laptop is a bit old but I think I should be able to run the game..here are my basic specs.

Intel i3 dual core Processor
4gb of memory
2.13 Ghz

My graphics card is a Intel HD4000 I believe...so is this the issue?
Mine is crashing pretty continuously on the world map. Usually when I encounter radiation or when I try to travel to a certain location.
Windows 8
Intel Core i5 4200M video card
8 gig RAM

Graphics related issue maybe? Im trying to travel to Highpool, but no go. Too much crashing.

I also got 2 reproducible crashes on Linux so far:

1.) In the load screen when entering Ag Center after Highpool is done. It crashes when the progress bar is at about 25%.
2.) In Highpool, after I adjusted the mortar. When I fire it, the game crashes.

These crashes are reproducible for me every time, while otherwise the game runs stable so far, no random crashes.
