If you want to play Multiplayer, get more characters from the Xbox version of the game and even play in widescreen, you will need Killer App Mod. For me, this is essential to enjoy the game in this day and age.

The installation is pretty simple.

First, get the unofficial 1.042 patch from here and install it:
https://tron-servers.net/patches/tron-update_v1x042ceng.exe

Then, get the Killer App Mod from here and install it:
https://tron-servers.net/patches/ka_mod_v1x1a_sfx.exe

You are done now. Enjoy the game!

If you still have problems running the game or need an installation tutorial, please check out the very extensive guide on Steam that has been written by LDSO (the creator of the Killer App Mod) and myself here:

Has this actually been tested with the GOG release?

I tested it. It worked on my machine.

Excellent :-D

I'll definitely be playing it over the holidays then.
I imagine there are a bunch of rights issues that (currently) prevent GOG from shipping the game with the Killer App Mod pre-installed. Being based on a movie, TRON 2.0 not supporting widescreen out of the box seems weird.

I re-installed this game from the original CD about two months ago after LoadingReadyRun featured the game in a videocast. After installing the above-mentioned patches, aside from some odd mouse behavior, it works fine. Are there any major differences/improvements between this version and the original CD release that would be an incentive to buy it again? (I mean, I probably will, anyway, but it'd be nice to know...)
Hey, schmatzler! Thanks for the recommendation and posting about the guide! :)

(Team member who worked on the Killer App Mod, here. You probably know me as LDSO and "TronFAQ" elsewhere.)

It's good to hear that Killer App works as-is with the GOG version. I still plan to test and verify that all fan-made add-ons work, and if necessary provide updates for them. The upcoming v1.2 of Killer App will also take the GOG version into account now.

Thanks again to JudasIsCariot for gifting me a copy of the game! I was going to buy it, but he graciously sent me a code to redeem. (I'll buy a copy anyway, and give it away as part of a contest.)

Are you playing the game on Windows 8.1? Have you tried the advice in this Microsoft knowledgebase article?

Unless you're talking about the hit detection on the System Memory screen. With the mouse cursor being somewhat offset when highlighting a subroutine or other object. That is a known issue and something that wasn't easy to fix. It'll be resolved in v1.2 of the mod.

You did some damn fine work, thank you :)

Thanks for the kind words. :) I'll pass that on to the rest of the LDSO team.

There's still room for improvement, though! The upcoming v1.2 will be a major upgrade. Part of why it's been taking so long. Major feature creep + lack of free time = several missed ETAs for release.

Is there a current ETA for v1.2? Only I don't know whether to wait until v1.2 is released or to just go ahead and play with v1.1a. It's the single-player element that I'm interested in really, not got much appetite for the multi-player.

The v1.2 update is mainly about making installation easier and integrating other fan-made add-ons into the process. (Not that installation isn't pretty easy already, but it can be streamlined.)

Plus adding significant new content to multiplayer. Single Player will see some enhancements as well, but nothing too significant. (Fixing small mistakes in the level texturing, etc.)

As for an ETA, I'm cautious about giving one out. But it's still months away.

Seriously I have to commend you for your fine work. Killer App is a must have for this game and a gem that kept this game alive over the years.

@schmatzler This is an important post for this game, everyone must install it, there is no vanilla there is only the Killer App.

Excellent work, mate :-)

I do have a problem though. The resolution thing doesn't actually work. The highest I can go in the game is 1280x960. During installation of the mod, I did set it to 16:9 and 1920x1080, but it doesn't appear to have had any effect.

I don't know which information would be relevant to figure out the problem, but just let me know what you need to know, and I'll do my best to dig it up.

OS: Windows7 x64

- Installed GOG release of TRON 2.0
- Installed unofficial patch 1.042
- Installed Killer App v.1.1a

All installations went smoothly.

If I start the game through its own shortcut, I get a launcher menu allowing me to set the resolution before launching the game. This also has no effect whatsoever.

The mod is installed and doing something though, because when I launch the game I get the LDSO intro video.
Well, it appears to work in-game anyway. I was confused by the following description:
Proper 16:9 and 16:10 Widescreen Support, including corrected Menus and Cutscenes.
I took this to mean that the main menu had also been redone in modern resolutions, which appears not to be the case. Once the game is started, the resolution kicks in.

There does appear to be a problem with the scaling in regard to the GUI though. For instance, in the subroutine GUI (F1) the zones to activate the individual GUI elements on mouseover seem to assume that the GUI is about 10% larger than it actually is, both horizontally and vertically.

Actually, the game does render in your selected resolution 100% of the time. The "black bars" you see in menus at the sides were added to prevent them stretching and/or looking weird. The alternative would have been even worse. (Upscaling them, but then it would create a Vert- situation where the tops and bottoms would be cut off.)

Yup, I acknowledged this earlier in the topic, in my reply to ewhac. :) It's a known issue and wasn't easy to fix. But it will be resolved in the upcoming v1.2 of the mod.

I took "Proper widescreen support, including corrected menus" to mean that the menus had actually been, you know, corrected. Hence, I expected them to be in the selected resolution and aspect ratio, rather than just upscaled from 800x600 (or something like that, they are quite pixelated anyway) and having black bars.

Mind you, I'm not complaining that the menus haven't been redone, only that the description led me to believe that they had, and that I therefore thought the mod wasn't working as intended. I am still very impressed with the mod ;-)
