Okay so ive had bother with this and its a bit annoying. Ive been searching around for help so i thought id come to the source.
Ive bought this off a different site and still getting the same problem so i came here and bought it because my brother got it from here and it works fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Ive tried finding my DirectX settings but i have no idea where to find them.

Cheers

You are playing a mod like ESC, Mayhem or Zero? Or do you use the community patch 3.9.02? If so you will need the hotfix available on tauniverse.com
I've got this problem as well.

I've got an Nvidia 980Ti with the latest drivers and Windows 10 64 bit with 16GBs of RAM.

I installed TA as normal and then followed these instructions to patch it up to the latest version and install the Escalation mod. I also installed the hot fix but nothing seems to fix the issue. Alas I can't post any links at the moment for some stupid reason (probably a spam filter of some type) but if you Google this:

"getting gog total annihilation working on windows 10"

and click on the fourth link down you'll find the instructions I used to install all the patches (the link goes to a Steam user community post).

Can anyone suggest a solution as I'm stumped. As far as I am aware I should have the absolute latest version of everything available.
For me error "0xc0000022" got fixed by enabling DirectPlay found in Control Panel --> Programs and Features --> Turn Windows features on or off --> Legacy Components --> DirectPlay. Then got "Error: Environment Initialization failed. Check Direct X settings" and fixed by adding -d to TA shortcut to run in window mode. The menu screen does show in window mode but when the game starts it is full screen.

System:
Windows 10 Creator Build
HP Pavilion Laptop with both Nvidia Geforce GT and Intel HD Graphics
Intel Core i5
Hi there,

so adding the -d works to get it started, but is there a way to make it go back to full screen mode after that? it's very small on my screen now.

Is the in-game resolution 640x480? Change it in the game options
Thank you so much! This is a major improvement. Any chance of getting one that works for Secret Forces?
Yet another game that doesn't work without fan fixes. Why doesn't GOG patch it?
Where else can I get DXwnd? This download doesn't work

I've just encountered this problem launching from Galaxy 2.0 with the free Commander Pack GOG is offering on the date of this post. The fix was very simple -- I just found the executable via Explorer in the GOG folder, ran it directly (which worked) and then it loaded without the error message from Galaxy as well.

I got the free pack as well. But when i run the executable from Explorer i still get the same error message.

I get similar Direct X error messages when running some other older games and have yet to find a workaround the issue despite trying a few things i've found through Google searches.
Had this problem, game wouldn't launch at all on Windows 10.

In the GOG Galaxy 2 client, I went to INSTALLED GAMES > Right Click on Total Annihilation > Manage Installation > Verify/Repair.

Let it work and game launched the next time I tried.
I bought TA from GOG.com today. My original CDs are still sitting on a shelf nearby, but I wanted a hassle-free pristine install. Well, "hassle-free" didn't quite work out, but after more than 2 hours of fighting, I figured out an installation routine that worked on my machine:

* Install game from GOG.com (to have version 3.1 + Core Contingency + Battle Tactics)
* Zip up the game directory to have a pristine copy in case anything goes wrong
* In GOG Galaxy > Installed Games, right-click Total Annihilation, select Manage installation > Verify / Repair (found that on the GOG forums)

To apply the unofficial community patch 3.9.02 (with features and bugfixes), I used several downloads from the forum post www.tauniverse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43735

* Install TA Patch Resources
* Install TA Patch 3.9.02
* Install TA Patch 3.9.02 Drop-In (probably not needed, but I did it)
* Install TA Patch 3.9.02 TestFix1 (the one that's linked for mitigating DirectX issues)

* Launch game from GOG Galaxy or the Desktop shortcut (because neither the shortcut in the installation directory, nor launching totala.exe directly would work)

The screen switches to 640x480 resolution for the main menu, but in-game, the resolution is higher (probably 1920x1080, like my desktop). The megamap and Ctrl+F2 menu from the 3.9.02 patch now both work.

My machine:
Windows 10 Home
Predator Helios 300 Laptop (bought early 2019)
Intel Core i7 2.20 GHz, 16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 + Intel UHD 630 (though I always use the NVIDIA chip)

my issues with fullscreen pretty much stopped by setting WinXPcompatibility mode for both exes with 3.9.02 .... + using lower res for small maps like first Core misssion (on 1080p t flickers the screen cause the map is too small for that res)

I set the same but it won't run from either executable unless in window mode and then it won't go past 1024 x 768.

Somehow it started working fullscreen off the GOG launcher, but if I alt-tab out the game screen stays black when I try to bring it up. Can still hear menu and unit sounds so it's just graphics. And get a crash if I try to access Visuals settings at all.

Anyways it's a little adaptation, just can't alt-tab and have to save, exit, return if I need to, but everything else is functioning now on 3.9.02 so at least I scraped by and can play.

Running otherwise vanilla on a HP Pavilion, W10 x64, Intel i5-8300H with 1050 Ti graphics.
