Hello, I started off in the HoMM 1 forum asking if anyone could help me solve this buzzing sound that plays behind the music....I thought well I also just bought thief gold so let's play that for now...

Well, not only am I having crashing problems in thief gold (I have an nvidia gfx card and apparently those don't tend to do well with thief gold) and I whenever I'm about to enter a mission it crashes. I also found that the cinematic's that play (the ones I see before entering the missions) cause the same buzzing sound in the music.....

My other GoG games and non gog games do not have this problem

I quote this from my HoMM 1 thread since I they both have the same sound issue.

"I just purchased HoMM 1 this evening and in the background there is a buzzing/hissing/static noise that plays in the background of the music tracks. As the music starts to end (such as the title screen) the buzzing/hissing/static noise starts crackling a bit then disappears and then reappears when the tracks loop again.

Please, help me on this issue. I want to enjoy this wonderful game without these annoying sounds.

I can give an audio file if requested."

I have tried many methods so far.

there is a link to the standalone demo(s) in the sticky topic. see if those give you the same problems.
Hello, thank you, for responding. I have tried starting the demo, and I receive the same error message saying "Your video hardware is not supported or no supported video mode was found". I'm on Windows 7 64 bit if that helps. The only way I can start thief is through a safe mode batch file, even then, thief gold crashes when I start a mission/tutorial. The cinematics play etc... (I hear that buzzing noise I mentioned).
you definitely should not be requiring the safemode to start the game. any chance you are using an optimus laptop?

anyway, try to update your audio and video drivers, pretty sure they are the cause of this, unless you also have a hardware problem.

just double checking, did you get the updated demo from the sticky topic, or did you download the original, old one from somewhere? you need to try out the updated one - let me NOT be lazy this time and post the link as well.

I do not have a laptop. My video and audio drivers are up to date. I downloaded the demo from the sticky earlier.

I had spent around 5 hours the other night trying to solve this. I honestly have no idea what it could be that is causing it to crash. The audio is also frustrating since the buzzing noise makes it so that even if I do get in the game(the menu/cinematic) it's not very enjoyable/same with heroes of might and magic one.

Thank you, for taking your time to try to help me.

there should be a thief.log and crash.dmp file in your Thief folder - post that if you want to troubleshoot some more.

I do not know how to open the dump file to post the contents.
Post edited June 22, 2014 by Xanth
you do not need to open it, just post it (zip the file, upload to some online storage like mediafire or sendspace, and post the link here).
Post edited June 23, 2014 by voodoo47
Very well, I did not do that because I did not know if it was allowed. It is currently uploading. I will edit this post and show the link when it is finished.

I am curious though. How does one open this crash.dmp file? I know how to open blue screen .dmps etc... but not this one, it was giving me trouble.

looks like the game is failing to set a proper resolution. edit your cam.cfg, and set your resolution manually;
game_screen_size 1920 1080
or whatever your monitor's native resolution is.
then edit cam_ext.cfg, and enable the windowed mode;
; force game to run in windowed mode
force_windowed
try running the DX9 mode.

I changed the game screen size. I noticed that whenever I start thief gold it resets my resolution in the cam.cfg to
640 480

It also continues to give me the error missage "your video hardware is not supported".

I did not understand how to enable the window mode. I just made those two lines look how you show in your post (I hope this is right).

I do not know how to try running it in DX9 mode.

Edit: I added -dx9 in the shortcut. I still get you video hardware is not supported and the cam.cfg keeps reseting the resolution on launch.
Post edited June 24, 2014 by Xanth
the game starts in DX9 mode by default unless you use the safemode batch file, so no need to change anything. that resolution resetting is weird, but anyway, it should run in windowed mode (and yeah, removing ; from the windowed line, or making it look like what I've posted should enable the windowed mode). try

game_screen_size 1024 768

together with the windowed mode, it should start up 1024*768 windowed. make sure you are editing the files in your Thief folder, not the ones in the doc folder.

//also, looks like you are running two monitors, try to disable the secondary screen.
Post edited June 24, 2014 by voodoo47
I disabled/removed the 2nd monitor. I also set my resolution ot 1024 768 on my monitor and in the cam.cfg and still get the message "Your video hardware is not supported or no supported video mode was found". My cam.cfg keeps resetting to 640 480 as well.
so when you run the game, you won't get into the menu or anything, just the error message and nothing else?

Yes, that is how it has been since the start. I only get to the menu when I run a safe mode batch file.

when I start a mission/tutorial it shows the cinematic (this is where the buzzing noise behind the music comes in) and then as I click to start after the cinematic it crashes.
